    I always thought it was:

Everything has chains, absolutely nothing's changed.
Take my hand, not my picture, still my teacher.
    "Delight in Our Youth"

"take my hand not my picture" spilled my teacher

Listening carefully, the studio version is both clear and unmistakable with regard to this line:

"everything has chains ... absolutely nothing's changed"

It is also indisputably on the band's own lyric page, so end of story with the original.

For sure there are many, many versions where it's sung as "everything has changed" but I doubt that it's a conscious decision by Ed at any point ... when you're soaring along and feeling good either one just flows out beautifully, and as far as meaning goes they both work equally well; I really think it's just wherever his head's at in the moment.

Chains is by far the more poetic choice, though :)

As to the OP's original question, I agree the next line is:

"take my hand, not my picture. Spilled my tincture"

what are the last line's of the songs. someone on youtube was saying how they connected to
"life's supposed to be just fun, oh live and die let it be done". i love that lyric but i had never deciphered it before. what is the final line after that?
  • it is definitely tincture

    WTF is Tincture?

I thought it was "Still my teacher"

And "To be tried, not be a judge"
"....and was very surprised to see that he didnt actually have a recipe for anus-ankle soup." - Big Ed
  • My money goes on chains. So many of Ed's lyrics are ambiguous on pupose. Think daughter 'violen(s) /violence center of her own attention' I don't have the sleeve in front of me, but it's written out something like that.
Better man - the way he used to sing it 'Can't find a better man' Or can't find a better man' if you get my meaning.
and I think he does change it up as he wishes - like so many other songs - how many sit as his table tonight?
I could think of alot more examples if it weren't 2:48 and I didn''t have insomnia...or still psyched from the show.
  • I USED to think it was "steal my T-shirt" :D LOL!

got a picture, spill my teacher :D
    scratching my butt...
    kinakamot ang aking puwit...
    me rascando pompis...
    krap mijn reet...

    bahrosh teezy...

I disagree. Sounds like changed to me for going on 14 years now. Still does.

Are you talking about the lyrics page connected to the "songs" section of this site? Because that is known to contain a few mistakes here and there.

How so? Any sixth grader could write that line that way. Seriously, if I really thought ed wrote "chains" I would no longer be able to listen to this song anymore ... it would ruin the best (and most poetic) line on Vitalogy for me.

"Everything has changed, absolutely nothing's changed."

    That's the line.

The reprise of the second verse is actually: "I'd rather starve than eat your breast" in stead of "bread"

    PJ.com/song doesn't have that...but I swear I hear it on the record.

i hear that too and i like that line better than "bread" but im not too sure if it's meant to be that way or not, to me theres not much difference between the two, though i havent taken the time to think about it recently

Yup, at :57, "bread" is clearly audible but at 2:42 it sounds like breast. :p

The real, 100% lyric is: "everything has chains" and I think it's by FAR a superior lyric to "everything has changed, absolutely nothing's changed".

The first actually has a clear meaning and uses the image of chains to effectively communicate what Ed was trying to convey, that even though he's rich and famous he still has the problems everyone faces (ie: the CHAINS!).

The second line is just meaningless, Kurt Cobain-esque "yeah, maybe it's one thing...or maybe it's ANOTHER! Wooooo!!!" laziness. I mean, I really like Nirvana but you get what I mean.

Ed uses both live however, he alternates it at random.

I love this post. That nonsensical jibberish that the alt crowd did in the early 90's.

Like that crap line in Glycerine in that Bush song, something like "I am never alone, I'm alone all the time".... One or the other pal. Yeah, Yeah, we know what you mean Gavin, even in a crowd you are alone. Just shut up. So cliche and boring. Eddie is above that! Except for "I changed by not changing at all".. Literally impossible. Yes we all know what he means so don't explain it to me, it's just nonsensical :>)

    Definitely TINCTURE ....

But I've heard ED sing "I'll take the FIRMEST path .... " and that makes more sense. Varment's path makes no sense.

    Sincerely,

Sorry, IT's CHAINS ... I can provide many examples if need be. I originally thought it was changed but then realized it ain't so.

"everything has changed ... absolutely nothing's changed"

And there's absolutely nothing about chains.

But then again, I always thought the lyric was:
"My name's Stan, here's my picture, buy my t-shirt."
Rise. Life is in motion. I'm stuck in line.
Oh rise. You can't be neutral on a moving train.

I knew this all along but just played both vinyl and CD and its CHAINS. A few years back I thought it was changed and wished it were but that ain't the case. If I talk to ED tomorrow I'll ask ...

  • WTF is Tincture?

    "

In medicine, a tincture is an alcoholic extract (e.g. of an herb) or solution of a non-volatile substance; e.g. of iodine, mercurochrome ). To qualify as a tincture, the alcoholic extract is to have a ethanol percentage of at least 40-60% (sometimes a 90% percent pure liquid is even achieved). [1]. Solutions of volatile substances were called spirits, although that name was also given to several other materials obtained by distillation, even when they did not include alcohol
