I was unhappy at first, but I want the print so I'm not going to sweat it cause ten years from now whether they give me $50 or $100 back it won't matter.

Just happy to get the print.

I want the print and if it means there are more then I thought there would be I'm fine with it. I want it framed and up on my wall. Hopefully they will allow those who want a refund to get one and those of us that still want the print to get it.

ultimately, this is where I think its at.

IMO, Ames overestimated the number of people who purchased the print who actually want to keep it... and thought they were making more people happy by increasing the run. We hear people complain a lot when they are shut out of stuff and they say "why dont they just print more?"... They were wrong. Maybe $250 is a high price point, but the gold print seems pretty unique and it should be sharp. I also doubt there will be all that many in existence.

I would bet dollars to donuts that they will honor timely refund requests. I dont feel like Ames went out to screw people over.
  • I wasn't able to get any of the 3 editions of this, I understand people's frustration.

That being said if someone doesn't get their requested refund and wants to sell me the print at cost plus shipping I would be interested. I don't want to go to ebay.

It's kinda like paying for a Cadillac and getting an Escort and the dealer saying oh well.

Right. Maybe the analogy works with a BMW and an Acura. You paid the premium for the BMW name and ended up with an Acura. Both having the same gadgets, but the name (or in this case rarity) that you paid the premium for did not exist.

Instead of being what was perceived as a "handful" and maybe fetching items such as a Donkey Kong poster or a PJ20 Mural,.... there are too many so the worthless junk may only fetch a Riot Act or a Pittsburgh '13 in the 'market'.

If Ames would have honored a few orders and cancelled the rest, people would be angry. They do this, assuming people actually wanted the print, people are angry.

Why don't sell it for the same price as the regular edition and refund the difference? ($150)

    Thanks. Doesn't help. But thanks.

Mystery sales aside (because who knows in those instances?), I only buy things that I will personally use.

This type of thinking/spending makes absolutely no sense to me. I wish it did. I would love to finally get a Kong somehow (which is why I've participated in mystery sales).

So the next perceived super limited thing to come out that says Pearl Jam on it, I should go all in, whether I want it or not?

Why didn't/wouldn't Ames simply state that "our intention was to create X amount of Gold variants. We'll honor the 1st X amount of orders to cover the edition then refund the others."

Most people wanted it and would shell out $250 for it for two reasons:
    1) It looks great. The silver foil was awesome too though but sold out in a minute.
    2) It's super limited.

Once #2 turned out to be false, with a print run probably double or triple the regular white A/P with a price premium of $150, then understandably people don't necessarily want it for that price. Why would you pay a premium for the least scarce version of a poster? Sure the print stock is more expensive to print than the white one. Fine, charge $25 extra for that or whatever premium is worth it. But they didn't up-charge for the print stock, they did bc the supposed scarcity of the run, which is what ever artist does.

They should have done one of these two things:
    1) Honor all the sales, but lower the price due to the misleading of the scarcity
    2) Refund all the orders that were more than the "handful" that they originally meant to print.

People who don't understand why people are upset don't understand collecting. It was rare. Collectors like rare things. Easy concept. The rarer the item the more it will usually cost.

Ah. I like my tuna steak rare. If the chef overcooks it, I send that shit back.

    Now I get it. Sorta.

Just called Ames and was told they know about all the complaints and an email will be coming out before end of day giving full explanation and options for those who bought. Person who answered phone was told it will also include how many are being printed, potential refund procedures etc

    Let's see what they say

Not sure if anyone has raised this but if anyone is so upset that they bought the $250 print that was subsequently over over sold during the Ames sale and are wanting a refund, im sure once the print arrives they could easily sell it over on lost dogs for cost and help out someone who missed out. I know I for one would buy one at cost in a heartbeat.
  • Yep. Kinda hoping Ames puts up the cancelled orders on their site.

Totally understand, and if after you read today's email update, you still want to cancel - no problem. See below:

    Hello,

First off, thanks for supporting our art.

As you know, it was our goal to release only a very small quantity of Gold Posters. Technology wasn’t on our side, and that didn’t happen - we ended up selling more than planned. The reason you are receiving this communication is because you were one of the 42% of people that had a Gold Poster in their shopping cart and completed a successful transaction before we caught the mistake, and turned off the product. Approximately 17% of Gold Poster buyers had questions/concerns, mostly around how many units were actually sold.

Here’s what we can tell you:

Gold posters will be Signed by Artist, as advertised. We still feel, based on the overwhelming demand for the poster, that $250 is fair price for the Gold Poster, and will not be issuing discounts.
We estimate the print run to be less than three hundred, and maybe much less depending on cancellations.
Because of this unintended discrepancy, our standard cancellation/return policy on posters will not apply. Anyone that wants to cancel their Gold Poster order can, and will be issued a full refund. To receive a refund, you must reply to this email by Wednesday, 9/30/2015 with “CANCEL MY ORDER”.
Profits from all posters sold beyond what we had originally intended to produce will be donated to the Vitalogy Foundation, a charitable organization helping countless numbers of people.

Our apologies for any inconvenience that this may have caused you.

I'm sorry but in no way is that an acceptable response. If the number is 300 posters, why should it cost more than the chrome as an example which only had 85 created? The scarcity of the product clearly was tied to the price as the rarest one cost the most and down by how many more there were of each product. Why they even went with "handful" over a specific number is curious on its own, but to dodge the issue yet again just isn't being honest with themselves or the consumer about the clear basis of their pricing model. At this point there may be more of them than normal AP S/n version

I did not get the email either. I with they had been upfront on how many orders for the gold actually received. They know this number, they do not have to estimate. Also, throwing out numbers doesn't make it meaningful. And finally, just number the damn things! Am I the only one who feels strongly about numbering limited edition posters? Grrr.
