Nice! Love that last 40 seconds or so too. Interesting how Stone is focused on Matt's playing much of the time.PJ212 said:
To me this is the most psychedelic song they've written. Around the 2 minute mark is where the drugs kick in...dimitrispearljam said:

I recently wondered to myself (while I was at a My Morning Jacket show) if Pearl Jam would push themselves further into this direction in the future.

I can't believe those 2 right in front of the camera aren't going crazy!? I would have been outta my mind!! Even the pit appeared asleep - maybe they were all stunnedPJ212 said:

I would agree. I don't think they really have any true psychedelic songs.my2hands said:To me, these songs are more atmospheric than psychedelic

I was in the pit that night, second from the rail in front of EV. Yes, stunned. I'm pretty sure my jaw is still on the floor of the Pepsi Center.FoxyRedLa said:Even the pit appeared asleep - maybe they were all stunned

That argument could certainly be made. None of them are quite as far out as, say, Hendrix's "Third Stone From the Sun". But I would say some are at least heavily psychedelia influenced. Maybe going all the way with that would not work for a band like PJ, but I'd be very interested in seeing them give it a shot. Or at least cover this onebootlegger10 said:

Psychedelic, does that mean under the influence! ie grateful deads - dark star or Uk psychedelic act sphongle. A great book of psychedelia in music by Patrick Lundborg is worth checking out, interesting bit on the 13th floor elevators. Grunge had always droplets of osychedlic mingled into the punk ethic. Nirvanas break down in drain you , soundgardens black hole sun. With pearl jam their IMO more psychedlic in patches live, particularly porch and rearviewmirror( Manchester UK 2009, amazing!). No code is the more spacey record and had profound experiences listening to it, particularly in my tree and present tense. So as I don't regard them as a psychedlic band, they've definitely taken me to other places!0

I agree that Pearl Jam songs don't qualify as real psychedelica, but the atmospheric songs do have a hint of psychedelica.bootlegger10 said:

Nothing as it seems for instance comes very close for me.
To me the same goes for Pearl Jam songs with a punk twist. They never really are real punk songs. They have a punk edge that show the musical interest of the band. It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.

Good point. They've often incorporated the best aspects of various rock genres- punk, psychedelia, metal, folk, even a few hints of jazz-- this may be a stretch but I hear jazz influences in songs like "Can't Keep".karmadefect said:

Maybe not the rhythm so much as the actual drum sound. I could see that a little.brianlux said:

I am no jazz expert although I do like Jazz, but I can see what you mean.
Apart from that I am very happy Stone convinced Ed to slow it down.
The faster uke version is fun, but the Riot act version is pure bliss.
It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.

No Way has some weird stuff going on in it as well.0

on a scale of 1 to 10 in psychedelicness, PJ is a solid 6 in the studio and and a 7 live. IMHO. Vitalogy is like a 60's psychedelic record, bad-trip style. Binaural is trippily layered. It's HIGHly subjective.
For me, the atmospheric stuff with more surreal lyrics do it, as well as the more jammy improv stuff. "Under your tongue, I'm like a tab, I will give you what, your not 'sposed to have"... Severed Hand... I actually find Black to be really psychedelic especially when Mike stretches out. Actaully anytime Mike stretches out it's trippy. In fact, Mike is trippy. And Ed's a trip. Stone is straight Trippin'. Jeff is tripped-out, and Matt is trippin' balls.

There are some songs like Of The Girl, No Way (if were talking strictly psychadelic sounding), a few others that they really could jam out much further if they wanted to take some chances.0

id say Pendulum is the closest?0

I never had No way in my list for Psychedelic stuff.WhatYouTaughtMe said:No Way has some weird stuff going on in it as well.
I am going to listen to it right now with that mindset. It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.
