Great article - thanks for posting this.

But... Rearviewmirror is a song about suicide? That's not how I've always interpreted it.

me neither. great article though. and I always attributed that "happiest gas station attendant" quote to Ed, not Dave.

    A few thoughts:

    1) It's interesting to hear Dave A's comments and how he thought the band was nuts for not enjoying any of the success they were having.

    2) Slow version of Leash? Is this version that on Vs. If it is, what does the fast version sound like?

    3) The Harpo's story. It's too bad I was only 14 in 1991. You read and hear about this story from time to time. Pearl Jam only ever played where I live (Victoria, BC) before they got big and famous. It's sad to read the crowd wasn't into what was probably the last time PJ ever played here. What I wouldn't give to see PJ play me a hometown show (I've never actually lived in a city where pearl jam has played a show.. I always have to travel).

I have a friend who was at that Harpo's show - at least, he claims he was.

Perhaps that show left such a sour taste in their mouths that they haven't wanted to come back. Don't worry - we promise it will be different this time!

It made me remember walking by the music store and seeing the poster for vs and being so anxious for it. I had to look at that damn poster for something like 3 or 4 months before it finally came out.

  • God it would have sucked to have met ed back then. Can you imagine, sitting around a campfire, singing a pj tune, and ed comes out of the bushes, legitimately angry, yelling at you to stop? I would have thought he was a lunatic.

Ed being 50 makes me feel old. As long as I don't think about that, I feel pretty young.
  • I remember reading the article when it came out and the tease on Rearviewmirror - I knew that it was going to be amazing and couldnt wait to get the casette and hear the new album (NOW I FEEL OLD!)

I think I have a copy of this somewhere....great article. It's amazing that even in this article it portrays the band not liking dave.

It makes me feel like I haven't aged, in a lot of ways. I can still go back to that time. The anticipation with the next album, and being able to see them live in March of '94 for the first time. The band's been around every year since, and with each new album, it creates an emotional chain back to 1991.

Great article - thanks for posting this.

But... Rearviewmirror is a song about suicide? That's not how I've always interpreted it.

I've never interpreted the song as a suicide song either. Always thought of it as having a fresh start in life. Escaping the people and things that are holding you back from your full potential. Thats just my take on the song anyway.
