The first time I heard Footsteps live I was like ...wow they are going to cover Times of Trouble...which I prefer over the two. It would be great to hear PJ cover the original version.

    Footsteps

Love both songs.. edge goes to Footsteps because the first time I ever heard it, the lyrics just resonated with me. It came at a time when I needed it.

This is exactly how I felt. Love both songs but Times of Trouble gets the edge for me.

    Not even close.
Was really hoping for back to back Footsteps -> Times of Trouble at Cornell's solo shows, but that didn't happen because he played the better of the 2.

No doubt. I don't think I have ever heard any TOTD reunion do Times of Trouble but I wish they would. I have to say.. the most recent reunion at the Sonic Evolutions/Mad Season show was the best I have ever heard with amazing versions of Reach Down and Call Me a Dog. Chris was totally on that night and also killed River of Deceit. Either way...great versions by my two all time favorite lead vocalists.

Stone wrote the music first... apparently both Ed and Chris wrote different lyrics at around the same time. I personally didn't hear Footsteps until years after I heard Times of Trouble...kinda like Chris.

Obviously Stone wrote the music first. But in terms of lyrics "Footsteps" was written as part of the Momma-Son demo. They obviously were written close to each other. But from earlier accounts. footsteps was first. Although Times was released first.

That song has so much potential. But it just goes nowhere.

Without for me. The version from Rockline they put on the single is when I really fell in love with it. Just a guitar and Ed, no studio polishing. The power and rawness of Ed's voice blew me away on that version. It's still nice to hear live now, but it doesn't compare for me.

Thanks for posting link. I'd forgotten about the Cornell/Avetts performance.....dang....so, so nice. How about that version as a 7" b-side or Christmas single???.

you should start a poll asking if people like polls.
