Thanks MedozK, that is helpful. I actually do have a Red LB and knew that was official but do not have the White BS nor PJ20 colored. Missed out on the Coke Ten but dont want to pay those rates.
I guess research will be the key as you shared.
I asked this of someone recently and they were not sure -- who are the resident Vinyl Experts on the boards? I know some of the Poster Guys, the Pick Guys, and the Merch Guys but to whom could I bring questions as I look to add originals?

How do those of us not fully experienced in the art of sniffing out dupes tell if something we are buying is the Original or a Bootleg?
First would be the colored vinyl. IIRC there are no official studio albums on colored vinyl, except for the new 'coke' Ten that Newbury released.

EDIT:White Backspacer, Red Lightning Bolt. Colored, and GITD PJ20 are also official

Second, there are usually subtle differences with the cover. Like S/T and Binaural have glossy covers with no cat. # on the spine. Binaural also has 'Pearl Jam' on the front cover like the CD. The Yield is not die-cut and again has no cat# on spine.

I don't have the unofficial Lost Dogs or No code, so I couldn't help you there, but I'm sure there are noticeable difference to those that do research.

Research is the key, don't just buy blindly.

Yeah, if a person is offering a "sealed" copy of most of the studio LP's and doesn't have detailed pics I would avoid it. Buy from people on the forum or pick up unsealed copies (with detailed photos) on ebay.

I would be so pissed if I bought a sealed Lost Dogs advertised as official and open it to find its bootlegged. Who knows, people might have bootlegs sitting in their collection sealed that they think are official.

There are a lot of vinyl experts on the board. I think if you just ask in the forums someone will gladly help you out, and if they don't know I'm sure someone else will step in with answers.

That is one of the really good things about these forums, is that in general we are here to help each other out.

Wrote the lost dogs ebay guy and asked him if it was official or a bootleg. Didn't answer my question just said his was on colored vinyl (which means fake,) for someone who didn't know any better, might think Pearl Jam put it out(especially judging on the $225 price tag.) Just seems criminal to me.

A lot of us have the originals, so there are a ton of people who you could play "compare the vinyl" with too. ;) I have also noticed that most bootlegs have 'fuzzy edges' on any printing on the jackets; kind of looks like they are photocopies. If all of the print isn't 100% sharp, you've got a bootleg. Of course, a bootleg could have been printed better than usual, so it's not a complete fail safe, but at least you know what to avoid.

Mainly because they refuse to reissue the vinyl releases and people don't want to pay the ridiculous prices the originals go for so enterprising people found a market.

The irony is people are paying ridiculous prices for the bootleg LPs.

Oh. I seem to remember when the self-titled bootleg came out people were snatching them up because they were at a reasonable price. I guess the demand for the bootlegs has increased, thus the prices have followed.

I thought that when they go for those high prices it is just because the buyers don't know any better and they think they're buying originals for a pretty good price.... No??? I really can't believe that folks are purposefully paying $200+ prices for boots. No way.

I thought the same thing, no way the people paying these HIGH prices know they are getting fakes.

I saw all of them in Brussels last summer, if you couldn't spot the bootlegs the moment you touch it then you deserve to spend $ on it. The sleeves are so flimsy and poorly printed, no legitimate band would package their LPs like that. The records are actually nice and sound ok.

I don't know, just seems kinda funny. They destroyed the bootleg industry when they decided to release official bootlegs. Why don't they do the same thing with this vinyl issue? I mean, damn have you checked Ebay lately, it's flooded with PJ bootleg vinyl. The need is out there, I just think Pearl Jam should cash in. I know they are probably rich, but who else deserves this money? Not these bootlegers, JMHO!

    Two words: Deluxe Sets

If they simply sell the vinyl before they get around to doing box sets, then less people will buy the more expensive boxsets (as they will already own the vinyl). Makes it harder to upsell.

That's been my guess. They will want to continue making those mega deluxe sets but are taking their sweet time doing so.
  • Frustratingly there's also a black vinyl bootleg of Mirrorball - have given up looking for a copy of that now as there doesn't seem to be a visual difference.

Yea, Mirrorball is a tough one. Lots of boots and I don't think people know it. Thats why I have stayed away from that one, I don't have enough knowledge about that release and I don't want a boot.

I thought for sure we would see No Code/Yield next year for the No Code 20th. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to bump that up to the fall to combat the bootlegs. If there is a SA tour planned too, they could probably make them coincide. Possibly given the popularity of the Milwaukee and Moline shows, maybe try that on the SA tour too.

I know they don't move at the pace that people here want, but the band and the management know what people are saying and try to make people happy.
