PEDOPHILIA

Look at us good Canadians discussing this issue.
My thoughts could go on forever on this. I worked in the court system for a brief period and worked on one case that involved pedophilia. You could always refuse a case based on personal beliefs etc... I was young and thought I was invincible and took the case on and regretted it soon after I read the case notes, but that's another story...
There are a myriad of issues surrounding this topic, I think mostly because some offend for different reasons.
Like Alli suggested, chemical castration is actually used. You can't impose it as a sentence, but some are attracted to children and don't want to be. They go through therapy and ways to try and control their impulses but some voluntarily chemically castrate. Similar to the alcoholic who takes a drug to induce vomiting when they drink.
In any case, the courts and the justice system are there to; punish those who offend, create a deterrent for others who see punishments given out, and to protect the community.
The Canadian system does a real poor job of all three with the way they deal with sexual offenders. It's actually quite surprising to me, because the courts are supposed to represent society's values, you're being judged by a jury of your peers, but for reasons I don't know, the sentences never seem to match the damage done.
In the end, especially with those who are re-offending and refuse treatment, I would like to see a mechanism where the court can give out a crazy harsh sentence in order to protect the community, cause in the end they wouldn't be announcing their whereabouts when released if they weren't concerned about them re-offending."Born on third, thinks he got a triple."0 -
I'll be candid here - probably emotional too, and for that I apologize. This issue hits close to home and much as I try to leave sentiments at the door, it's not always a successful endeavor.
Over the past so many years, I've arrived at a strange balance between forgiveness and not forgetting. Well...can't forget. I shouldn't, really. And not sure I want to or am able. Part of my evolution, I guess.
A sense of wanting vengeance as well, but I'm pretty sure he's long-dead. And some release has been found in putting pen to paper, screaming through written words, then trashing the diatribes.
This sad and sorry excuse for a man used his friendship with my parents to...well, to put it gently...take advantage of me, for several years. Manipulated, covered up, messed with mind and body, lied with a smile, planned his escapades.
This fucker had a daughter my age too. Can't imagine what she endured.
From here, I don't care if treatment was an option for this piece of shit and others like him. Most of that kind won't GET - accept? - treatment until caught (and in the meantime, how many are fucked with before the actions are brought to light...if ever?).
Well...had to let that out. Felt good, too.
All my huffing and puffing aside and for whatever it's worth, I'll say that Thirty and Hugh are not just good men, but good people. Included and reflected in the posts in this thread, and also overall from what I know of you both. Can never have too many with common sense plus compassion.0 -

Hedo...
It's unfortunate to hear your tale. Sadly, it's not unique- there are a lot of brutal men out there and a lot of victims.
Did you ever tell your parents?
* And thanks for the kind words by the way!"My brain's a good brain!"0 -
I read somewhere that pedophiles who are caught are estimated to have molested dozens of children before getting caught.
Scary world, I definitely agree that it seems like it has to be a psychological malfunction, because it is so far outside the headspace that most of us inhabit, it is truly unfathomable.Monkey Driven, Call this Living?0 -
gambot, I'd say you're right. Scores of silent ones amid those brave enough to speak out (or those dumb/selfish enough to betray the pedo-code).
Thirty, I was silent / silenced but finally, at my no-more point, turned to my older sister and she fiercely stood up for me. Such clarity of that night, slo-motion meets the whoosh of time.
As to my parents, they were told by me separately, surprisingly, years apart. Wrote out a whole thing earlier but got rid of it due to a sense of gut-spilling-indulgence via keyboard. Sometimes self-censoring can be beneficial.
And, you're most welcome0 -
I have been avoiding posting on this thread, not for what might be usual reasons, but because I have some knowledge in the area as it tangentially intersects with my work, and I did not have time these last few days to respond to these posts as they deserved.
Firstly, hedonist, I'm really sorry to hear about what you went through, and I applaud you and your fierce sister for standing up and saying no more.
Thirty Bills Unpaid, you were looking for stats on recidivism rates. I can't put my hands on those immediately as my colleagues are on vacation but I can get those for you (for us?) after the holidays, if you still want them. Similarly for the question on length of sentences - I can probably get that, but it would apply to Canadian sentences.
For "chemical castration" - there are several different medications that can reduce sex drive/testosterone levels, ranging from a modest reduction to complete absence of any testosterone production. Most can be given in either oral or injectible form, and with an injection you can of course know if the person is taking it or not. However, even absence of testosterone does not necessarily equate to absence of sex drive, and does not necessarily mean no risk for re-offending. For some individuals the risk of re-offending seems to actually increase, for reasons that are somewhat graphic so I won't go into any details. There are also other potential side effects to reducing testosterone, similar to what can occur in women with menopause - osteoporosis, increased risk of heart disease, etc. scurtis is correct, our legal system can impose a lot of different sanctions but can't insist that someone take medication, which is probably actually for the best since lawyers and judges are legal people, not medical people, and not in the best position to decide who needs medication. And indeed a reasonable number of sex offenders choose to accept medication to try to avoid re-offending. Some even come forward without any offences and ask for treatment so they don't offend.
Sex offender registries, such as the US has, are fraught with problems. The American one is a mess, with large numbers of people on it that shouldn't be as they do not pose a risk to the public, the putative reason for the registry (these include teenage boys with somewhat younger teenage girlfriends, teens who 'sext', etc.). Where I live, there is notification about high risk offenders when they are released. (There are also generally restrictions on where they can live in terms of proximity to schools, recreation centres, apartment buildings with children, neighbourhoods with children, etc.)
The whole discussion of mental disorder or not is perhaps one to leave for another day.my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf0 -

I can not imagine how awful it would be to have those impulses and not want them. they must got somewhat crazy trying to deal with it. probably become addicted to drugs and/or alcohol trying to suppress those urges.
I dealt with something a while back that was a mental disorder but it was not sexual in nature. it was, after doing much research, something called "intrusive thoughts". it's a by product of anxiety and depression, and would cause me to think of things and feel impulsive to do things I knew I didn't want to do; for example, driving my car, all of a sudden I would have this impulse to veer into oncoming traffic, or drive off a bridge. I knew I didn't want to do it, but I felt as if I had no choice. Same thing with harming others. I was once at a football game with my family, and we were in the first row of the upper deck. My sister stood up to cheer, and I had this frighteningly awful impulse to want to push her over the edge. I was scared to death that not only did I think of this, but that I felt like I was going to do it and had no way to stop it.
Luckily my anxiety disorder is under control, and I don't have those thoughts anymore. But I wonder if it is something like that. As a side note, my psych told me that he has never heard of one instance of someone acting on their intrusive thoughts, so that was comforting. I wonder how many people out there are attracted to children but don't act on it? kind of a scarey thought, actually.

Oh, I only meant that I didn't have time to get into it because it's a complex topic with lots to say on either side. I didn't mean to shut down discussion but I have a turkey dinner with all the trimmings to go cook now. I'd be happy to post more later.my small self... like a book amongst the many on a shelf0 -

actually, I'm sure there are many that think that way. maybe all wouldn't admit it, but......I still think it's a mental illness. I guess I can't explain it any other way.
