How Far Have You Traveled?

I did all the over land travel in the air miles calculator. Didn't feel the need for total accuracy.
One of the travel bloggers I follow uses that Tolkien quote.
I'm not the biggest fan of flying either but across considerable distances it's the most efficient option. I went to Chicago with a friend from home, had we driven would've taken twice as long leaving us with that much less time to actually see Chicago.
If we had trains like Europe it would be so much better.NYC 06/24/08-Auckland 11/27/09-Chch 11/29/09-Newark 05/18/10-Atlanta 09/22/12-Chicago 07/19/13-Brooklyn 10/18/13 & 10/19/13-Hartford 10/25/13-Baltimore 10/27/13-Auckland 1/17/14-GC 1/19/14-Melbourne 1/24/14-Sydney 1/26/14-Amsterdam 6/16/14 & 6/17/14-Milan 6/20/14-Berlin 6/26/14-Leeds 7/8/14-Milton Keynes 7/11/14-St. Louis 10/3/14-NYC 9/26/15

There is a lot to be said for this question. Most of us dont have the time to drive everywhere on our destination trips but sometimes we miss a lot of the good stuff. I have flown to cities in almost every state in the US but I learned so much more about things on my first cross country drive where we soaked in a lot of boring stuff but got a lot of payoff things as well.my2hands said:

This might be a really stupid question but I don't drive so cut me some slack. When you are driving long distances don't you have to get on the highway? What exactly is there to see on a highway? Besides roadkill, which makes me sad. I had to go on a long drive to Steel Stacks in Pennsylvania and everything was just completely desolate on the way there.NYC 06/24/08-Auckland 11/27/09-Chch 11/29/09-Newark 05/18/10-Atlanta 09/22/12-Chicago 07/19/13-Brooklyn 10/18/13 & 10/19/13-Hartford 10/25/13-Baltimore 10/27/13-Auckland 1/17/14-GC 1/19/14-Melbourne 1/24/14-Sydney 1/26/14-Amsterdam 6/16/14 & 6/17/14-Milan 6/20/14-Berlin 6/26/14-Leeds 7/8/14-Milton Keynes 7/11/14-St. Louis 10/3/14-NYC 9/26/15

you said by driving you would not have had as much time to see chicago... so i was just asking what's wrong with seeing everything you flew over PLUS chicago, instead of just seeing chicago?
my point is by flying you miss everything in between, and sometimes the in between can be everything
i have flown to seattle for the gorge in 2005 and had a blast, and i understand that sometimes you HAVE to fly, no doubt about it... and, of course, flying is usually cheaper, easier, and more convenient... but so is McDonalds

not a stupid question at all... leaving work so i can respond better later... but to some up it up in a sentence... one mans desolation can be another mans beautiful playgroundldent42 said:This might be a really stupid question but I don't drive so cut me some slack. agree.my2hands said:Flying is not traveling to me... You leave point A and arrive in point B with just stale peanuts and stale air in between destinations... no culture, no landscape, nothing...
Driving on the other hand, now that is traveling my friends...
2500 miles for just 2 shows on this past Midwest tour... we were able to experience first hand Appalachia, the mid south, the Mississippi delta, and the midwest/great plains with all kinds of stops and adventures along the way... if I flew I would have seen 3 airports and cab rides/shuttles to and from the hotel
Drove 2600 miles last week. And loved every mile. Price gas went down too.10-18-2000 Houston, 04-06-2003 Houston, 6-25-2003 Toronto, 10-8-2004 Kissimmee, 9-4-2005 Calgary, 12-3-05 Sao Paulo, 7-2-2006 Denver, 7-22-06 Gorge, 7-23-2006 Gorge, 9-13-2006 Bern, 6-22-2008 DC, 6-24-2008 MSG, 6-25-2008 MSG0 -
I drove from Indiana to Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton and back again for the 2011 tour by myself. While Saskatchewan may just be wheat fields it was still awesome to be in the middle nowhere. Very relaxing. As far away from a desk and computer as possible. Would go an hour without seeing another car sometimes.
Now, the last 10 hours of the drive back was painful.0 -
We drove from St Paul to Milwaukee and from there it was a 16 hour drive to Denver. First drive was nice, second one not so much haha :P I was warned that driving through the Midwest wouldn't be much of an adventure and I'm afraid they were right!0

Seriously i think we only like 4 or 5 days including travel days + show day.
But honestly I never even knew anybody that went anywhere except when they had to see family until like two years ago. So I should really shut up on this topic.NYC 06/24/08-Auckland 11/27/09-Chch 11/29/09-Newark 05/18/10-Atlanta 09/22/12-Chicago 07/19/13-Brooklyn 10/18/13 & 10/19/13-Hartford 10/25/13-Baltimore 10/27/13-Auckland 1/17/14-GC 1/19/14-Melbourne 1/24/14-Sydney 1/26/14-Amsterdam 6/16/14 & 6/17/14-Milan 6/20/14-Berlin 6/26/14-Leeds 7/8/14-Milton Keynes 7/11/14-St. Louis 10/3/14-NYC 9/26/15

Don't call me a hero yet. I flew from Philly to Seattle. I can't imagine driving coast to coast during winter. What would you do? Go out of the way down south to avoid the snow or try to drive through the snow?my2hands said:

I don't think that is a bad question but. Take south Dakota for example. When driving across country one time we spent two packed days of seeing what an awesome state that is. Badlands. Mount Rushmore. Deadwood. All of the good people we met....and I never thought I would love south Dakota but I do.ldent42 said:This might be a really stupid question but I don't drive so cut me some slack. Were I flying across country I never would have experienced a small part of what that state has to offer.
I have travelled all over the usa but have only seen a glimpse of Europe and central america.. Have never been to Australia or south america to name two other spots that pearl jam loves to play. Hats off to those who have logged massive miles to see the band. Travel however you can!!The love he receives is the love that is saved0
