How Far Have You Traveled?

I calculated the mileage I have traveled to see Pearl Jam throughout the years. I know this was within another unrelated thread, but I couldn't find it. That was prior to the midwest shows anyway.

I traveled 24 times by car for 8,947 miles (I drove all but 250 miles).
I traveled 2 times by bus for 510 miles.
I traveled 6 times by plane for 18,575 miles.

Total: 28,032 miles

Using the calc in that link I've done 49,270. That doesn't include local shows.
It also doesn't include travelling to Jersey from Queens at 5pm, in the rain, wearing one of those sprained ankle boots, on the subway + path train. Seriously I should just round it up to an even 50k for account for that. :D

I can't even imagine between 3 Euro Trips, 2 NZ/AUS trips and many many over canada and US got to be 100,000 at least.

    SHOW COUNT: (170) 1990's=3, 2000's=53, 2010/20's=114, US=124, CAN=15, Europe=20 ,New Zealand=4, Australia=5
    Mexico=1, Colombia=1

  • In 2014 alone I traveled about 9700 miles. It would take a while to calculate the rest.

This thread and the idea of traveling makes me think of these 3 great quotes regarding travel:

“Travel far enough, you meet yourself.”
    ― David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

“Remember what Bilbo used to say: It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” – JRR Tolkien

“The cool thing about being famous is traveling. I have always wanted to travel across seas, like to Canada and stuff.”
    – Britney Spears

    :))
The love he receives is the love that is saved

  • “The cool thing about being famous is traveling. I have always wanted to travel across seas, like to Canada and stuff.”

That one is as good as Kellie Pickler's "I thought Europe was a country" on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader - she isn't!

Reminds me of somebody I met in St. Louis that was from Colorado, asked me where I was from and I told them Illinois. Their response to me was priceless "I've been to Chicago but I've never been to Illinois."

That's pretty awesome. For the most part I've lived on Vancouver Island so the furthest places I've driven to see shows is Missoula and Boise. Most of the shows I've seen are in Vancouver/Seattle which aren't very far away on a map (but due to the ferry it takes about 3.5 hours to get to Vancouver or 5 hours to get to Seattle). I did PJ in Portland once but thats not horribly far away either. I lived in Edmonton for a short time and drove to Calgary for the 09 show. That's about 350km but still shorter than Victoria to Vancouver time wise :)

In 22 shows I would guess it's somewhere around 5000km.

Oh wait... right after I moved to Edmonton I drove back to the Gorge for the 06 shows. That was the longest drive I ever did. Thinking about it I'm probably closer to 10000km total for 22 shows.

edit: I've always thought it would be cooler to live in East where there are more big cities and they are closer together. I've always imagined it makes shows easier to see. Out here in the West things are spread pretty far apart. Outside Vancouver/Seattle/Portland you're looking at 10 to 12 hour drives to go see PJ (if they play Alberta or Montana) or 20ish hours to L.A. or maybe 15 hours to San Fran (not counting the ferry).

Flying is not traveling to me... You leave point A and arrive in point B with just stale peanuts and stale air in between destinations... no culture, no landscape, nothing...

Driving on the other hand, now that is traveling my friends...

2500 miles for just 2 shows on this past Midwest tour... we were able to experience first hand Appalachia, the mid south, the Mississippi delta, and the midwest/great plains with all kinds of stops and adventures along the way... if I flew I would have seen 3 airports and cab rides/shuttles to and from the hotel

I wonder how I was suppose to get to Australia and Europe then.

Just traveled to Denver from NYC, visited a friend from my firehouse, in the mountains (GuacamoleJoe). Wish I was able to travel more often.

No need to take things so literally my friend... obviously you have to fly to other continents lol... I just decided personally there is enough to see and do here in beautiful north America so I have no need to fly really

Ok, this will take a while for me to work out but I know Vancouver is 7050miles or 11343.45kms from my home(that's in a straight line which of course is not how I got there) & Oslo is 17198kms or 10687miles, again, in a straight line. I'll try & work it out sometime but meanwhile Auckland to 3 venues in Australia, Auckland to 6 locations in Europe & Auckland to 7 locations in the USA & Canada & the miles will add up! :)

e.t.a. I just did that calculator thing & I couldn't put in my whole tour in 2013, not enough spaces, but it gave me 12732 miles or 20504 km one way & 25464 miles or 41008 km return.
