by the way I think Force Of Nature and Amongst The Waves are clearly the 2 best songs, but I really do like Speed Of Sound too, but overall I never listen to Backspacer, can't listen to Johnny Guitar, there are only 6 songs I even like on there, that is why I have it ranked as my 11th favorite Pearl Jam album if you count Lost Dogs
    1.Amongst The Waves
    2.Force Of Nature
    3.Speed Of SOund
    4.Got Some
    5.Supersonic
    6.The End
use to kind of like Unthought Known until they started playing it every show now I am just tired of it, proof that you can overplay a song, I don't need to hear it on every bootleg, it is not that great of a song "gems and rhinestones" sorry that is super cheesey, I may catch flack on this one but I really don't care in the realm of Pearl Jam songs, this is definitely in the bottom half for me

I think Backspacer has aged very well, 5 years already?
I also am a fan of Johnny Guitar and Supersonic as well.

There's a few I like pretty much equally, but today I'm taking Amongst The Waves.

    Amongst The Waves
    Force Of Nature
    The Fixer
Just Breath (my wife and I's wedding song; I have to include it, you'll understand :)
    The End

Never liked Unthought Known or Speed Of Sound, but think it's a great record otherwise.

Today for me it's The fixer

    Unthought Known
Wow hank, we have completely different opinions when it comes to backspacer. :))

I think the two worst songs on BS are force of nature and speed of sound. For me the top 5 are:
    1) Unthought
    2) The end
    3)Got Some
    4)Amongst the Waves
    5)Just Breathe

    Force of Nature
I have to say, Force of Nature has really snuck up on me, I almost forgot about it till recently. Really solid song on all levels and unique as well...

Unthought known is a close second for me especially in a live setting

    Force of Nature
^^^ My 2 fave songs are Force of Nature and Speed of Sound.

And I can see how SOS might be hard for some people to like. It's not a typical PJ song. But how can you not like FON?? Sooooo good!

if you listen to Vs or Yield or No Code, then listen to Unthought Known, not in that league and really not a great song, I don't think it is an unfair criticism, just because they force feed me it on nearly every bootleg doesn't mean I am going to all of a sudden say "damn what a great ####ing song!", sorry but overall, Backspacer is weak sauce, the guitar work on it is the least interesting out of any of the albums and what we are suppose to pretend it is something it's not? Just because Pearl Jam is my favorite band, doesn't mean that I can't be real. Be honest with yourself and is Unthought Known unique? or is territory the band has covered before, and on a higher level? I can't listen to Given To Fly and then Unthought Known and honestly think UK is in the same league as GTF, really not, and I could make a long list, a couple cheesy lyrics doesn't make a song great, and Eddie has written much greater, deeper and more meaningful stuff than that, just saying

    Agree with all of that.

I smoked a bowl after working 13.5 hours when I wrote that, lol, so all that hit me in that rare moment of clarity when I could explain exactly the way I feel without getting in my own way which unfortunately for me I do from time to time
  • To me, Unthought Known is one of the bands truly great songs.

The other 9 songs on that list make me cringe.
An album I will never listen to.
An album I have not listened to in years.

Just got this DEVO record a few weeks ago and last Saturday morning had it playing while I was doing some household chores... this song got to the chorus and from the other end of the house I thought someone had switched records to Backspacer.

Unknown Thought is a great song. I don't understand people who don't like this song, but like Speed of Sound or Force of Nature. Contrarians I'm thinking but to each it's own. I just don't hear it.

    Anyway:
    Got Some
    Just Breathe
    Gonna See My Friend
    The End

    are all solid.

    Amongst the Waves
    Force of Nature
    Speed of Sound
    Johnny Guitar

some of the weakest songs in the catalogue on the worse album they've released
