What's the most racist country on the planet?

  • Spain never released Aragones after he made his brutal comment. He never apologized either- choosing to defend his words by saying he likes gypsies. This says a ton about the general, or accepted, mentality at the time.

I know people who will disagree with me on this, but I think we still have to acknowledge one of the greatest, most horrific acts of racism of all time was AND IS the American genocide of the First Nations/Native American/American Indian people. We wiped them out, shoved them around, herded the survivors on to shit hole pieces of land, shoved alcohol down their throats, gave them a few dollars- just enough to live on but not enough to move up- and proselytized them with our phoney religions. And then to add insult to injury we came up with all kinds of groovy ways to alleviate our guilt by making fake imitation dream catchers, and symbols to hang from our rear view mirrors and pendants, symbols and jewelry to hang on ourselves to become pretend Indians... while the real Indians are still being fucked.

True. And Leonard Peltier still resides in jail today for a crime that he didn't commit back in 1976. And the majority of native Americans continue to live in abject poverty within one of the wealthiest countries on Earth.

    yes I disagree.
You disagree? You disagree that one of the most horrific acts of racism in history was the genocide of the Native American Indians? How so?

I think we should learn from the past and learn about the past but never dwell on the past, move forward...most people add their own twist on past history and pick and choose what parts they believe to be true.

I think a good measuring stick of the overall racism is the behavier of fans at sporting events towards minorities. I know the US had some problems in the past but things seem quite normal in current day. Heck, my favorite hockey player is from the former Soviet Union. But overall I don't see much discrimination with the exception of when PK Subban scores a game winning goal in Boston and twitter lights up (this is a region that likes to use the word "wicked" alot ... overall US public should not be judged).

But compared to what I see happen at football matches in Europe and the rest of the world, we are the cat's meow.

I think that's a terrible measuring stick considering in our popular sports the white players are the minorities. Baseball and hockey aren't that popular compared to football and basketball. In Euro soccer there are far fewer people of color and so more overt racism would be expected. Who is gonna heckle black folks openly at sporting events when practically their whole team is black?
I think that is a very bad example to justify fan behavier at football matches. Racism should not be tolerated by any fan base, team management, governing body, or country.
I'm not justifying, only saying it doesn't paint a clear picture because with football and basketball in the US the racism is mostly kept behind closed doors, and not overtly displayed at stadiums. We may seems cat's meowish, but I have heard a ton of racial slurs in private that would have been kept quiet in public.

With all due respect, GF, we're not just talking about the past. We're talking about today, right now.

Also, if part of your disagreement is over the innocence of Leonard Peltier, maybe seeing this film would give you cause to change your mind:

That Peltier has never been granted parole is both a tragedy and a travesty.

I heard the best live version of it that I've ever heard recently - but now I've forgotten which live show it was. I need to rack my brains to try and remember.
