Small Town for the Yoopers in Detroit
Okay, most of you are probably wondering, What the heck is a Yooper?
The word Yooper has just recently been added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary:
Yooper: a native or resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan —used as a nickname.
Now if you do any research on the U.P. you will see that while the U.P. is incredibly beautiful and has a lot of attractions, the population is very low Only just over 300,000 This is only 3% of the population of All of Michigan. It is really nothing but small towns. In fact, the biggest town, Marquette, has only 21,000 people. There are only 3 towns over 10,000. The town I grew up in only had 475 people.
The U.P. is greater in size than the four states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island combined. It is larger than Belgium or Switzerland.
Why do I mention this?
So Pearl Jam is coming to Michigan and I started thinking about all the shows I have been to (23) and all the times I have heard the song Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town aka Small Town dedicated to all the small towns surrounding that city.
A simple request as a Proud Yooper Pearl Jam fan,
Please Dedicate and Play Small Town for the Yoopers.
It would be so awesome to hear Ed say “This ones for The Yoopers”
If you have ever met a Yooper you probably know that we are incredibly proud of being one. If we still live there, we don’t want to move away. If we had to move away, we can’t wait to return.
I don’t know if Ed and the band have ever been here but I could see them loving it.
It Truly is Gods Country. Wilderness, Forests, Streams, Waterfalls, Mountains, Lakes.
A Sportsman’s Paradise. Hunting, Fishing, Snowmobiling, Skiing, Hockey, Swimming, Hiking.
It is Peaceful. It is Beautiful. And no matter where I live, it will always be home.
If you are a Yooper or even if you have ever been to the U.P. please support this request for the many small towns of the Upper Peninsula & Share your U.P. hometown or place you have visited.
My hometown is White Pine. It is minutes away from the Porcupine Mountains and Lake Superior. The Porcupine Mountains aka The Porkies is my favorite place on earth. I grew up skiing there in the winter and my summers were spent on the beaches of Lake Superior.
