Anyone else on the street puts you in a chokehold you can defend yourself by any means, a cop does it you get piled on and die. There's no excuse for this. There's no stopping it until they get held accountable, they aren't above the law.

    A rather extreme, unusual, abnormal event is my guess but if the reporting is accurate, it's also absolutely deplorable, offensive, disgusting and very f'd up.

    I saw this story not too long ago clicked on it but I could not get to read the article. This is really sad....you may ask what else could the officers could have done? Well, they could've called in for back up and possibly tazered the guy. However, to put him in a choke hold so many things could go wrong other than him not being able to breathe which likely led to the heart attack....that choke hold could crush one's wind pipe at the very least.

    Six children left fatherless in this day and age is just simply terrible. I hope the NYPD will make some changes but probably not.

    Clearly not a chokehold but clearly an abuse of power.

    I will say this that there is something wrong with society when you fear cops and hate cops and when you are a cop and you hate who you are protecting.

    I needed to Google the story because the link appears to be messed up.

    This guy was apprehended at his ex-girlfriend's house that he had a restraining order from. In answer to your question, Unsung... it stops when people respect the law. It's one thing to beat your woman... it's an other to ignore the courts and force the legal hand.

    Lets acknowledge the fact that they were dealing with a large and drunk guy, also on valium, and in violation of the conditions the courts had set for him. We don't know 'exactly' what happened, but I'm pretty sure that if the guy was making an illegal visit to his ex while intoxicated... he was at least a little agitated. I highly doubt the guy made it really easy for the officers right from the outset. If he was really peaceful and cooperative, I'm sure things would have gone much better. This guy had two chances to stay fortunate.

    Now, with that said... it appears, from what I read, that restraint wasn't practiced once the situation was under control. This is bad. And, from what I read, medical attention was not sought when the man complained of his breathing difficulties. This is bad.

    Tough job- being a cop. You should do it though, Unsung. You should be a cop. You keep saying how generously they are paid and you always seem to know what to do and how to handle yourself in tough spots. It sounds perfect for you. Think of the positive example you could set for all the other cops who clearly have no idea how to administer law enforcement.

    Maybe if the man had done what the cops asked they wouldn’t have had to jump on him. You can even hear him say that he's tired of being harassed and it ends today, this can and most likely will be taken as a threat to a police officer.

    And what do you want the police to do, they told him he was under arrest, he didn’t comply, should the police just throw their hands up and walk away? The situation is terrible and a man died for really no reason, but maybe, just maybe, if he complied he would still be alive today.
