Pregnant woman killed for family "honor"
The terrible fate of Farzana Parveen, 25, is one shared by all too many women in Pakistan and elsewhere.
She was killed in the name of "honor," on the grounds her actions had brought shame on her family.
According to a report published in April by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 869 women in the country were the victims of honor killings last year. And activists say the true number may be much higher.
Parveen's brutal killing is all the more shocking because it was so public.
She was beaten to death with bricks close to the high court in the eastern city of Lahore by a group of about 20 people, including her brothers, father and cousin, police said.
One family member made a noose of rough cloth around her neck while her brothers smashed bricks into her skull, said Mushtaq Ahmed, a police official, citing the preliminary report into the killing. She was three months pregnant, he said.
So-called honor killings often originate from tribal traditions in Pakistan, but are not a part of Islam. Although they're common in rural areas, Tuesday's

This was horrible. She was so strong and brave. (She didn't want to marry her own cousin. That is also sick, marriage with relatives.)

Nice to see that "NOT a part of Islam" was INCLUDED. Ain't gonna lie to you, thought this was gonna be one of those anti-Islam threads but good to see that it's not.0

I read more and more of these stories and I am shocked and suprised that more is not being done to stop this, I read one about a woman (young lady mid 20's) left her husband because she couldn't take the beating any more and he and his brothers tracked her down beat her and cut off her nose...for honor ?badbrains said:Nice to see that "NOT a part of Islam" was INCLUDED. Maybe we should get our own house in order before we get outraged at what is going on in other nations? And yea, there's no war on women in the good 'ol US of A. Just another conspiracy to take your manhood away, I guess.unsung said:The real war on women.
Sunday was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the launch of this year's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. In the time it takes me to write this paragraph, 26 people -- given our statistics probably all women -- will be assaulted by an intimate partner in the U.S. In the roughly 48 hours between my writing and posting, at least six women in the US and hundreds if not thousands around the world will be killed by violent spouses. So, what does it mean that Republicans in Congress have degraded and continue to hold up passage of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) for the first time since 1994?

Anyone care to discuss the percentage of such cases that might have been perpetrated by a "Christian" and/or a "conservative?"

I think it's more culture, not religion.
And by culture, I mean mindset, environment...not necessarily geography.
I've posted about this before but it's still with me more than 30 years later.
My family spent a summer in Iran before the revolution (mom's Persian, dad was German). I was around 11. Parts of the country were beautiful - Tehran reminded me a bit of New York in its people and vibrancy.
Walking through the city one day, we went by a construction site.
I was wearing a tube top.
I wasn't flat at that age, but nowhere even close to possibly appearing like I was trying to look provocative.
The construction workers threw stones at me.
They probably were yelling too; I don't remember. Just that "the FUCK?" feeling of having rocks hurled at me for daring to show...well, to show what, I don't know.
