Ed a fan of Harold & Maude?

First off, Harold and Maude is one of my favorite movies EVER! It's very fucked up, but in a good way. If you haven't seen it, check it out, or at least read the wikipedia entry on it.

Anyway, Cat Stevens did the soundtrack for it... Don't Be Shy and If you want to sing out were both recorded specifically for that movie, also, Trouble is on the soundtrack. The first 2 songs I mentioned were not available anywhere else for a very long time.

I just think it's interesting that every Cat Stevens song Ed has covered has been off of the soundtrack to a very bizarre/obscure movie, maybe he's a fan of it? orrrr maybe he just found the soundtrack someplace and liked it.

Also, I wonder if Cat Stevens doing a soundtrack influenced him at all in doing the soundtrack to Into the wild.

also, for those who own the soundtrack, what's your favorite song? Mine is Father & Son (would love for Ed to cover it.)

    Eddie talked about the movie and the soundtrack at the San Diego show this Spring. I'm assuming he's a huge fan of Harold and Maude.

    Apparently, there was never a formal release of the soundtrack. It's a cult film these days, but the movie was so poorly marketed at the time of it's release that not many people knew about it. Apparently Elton John was approached with writing the soundtrack but turned it down because he thought the script was "daft"

    For years Cat Stevens fans had to find these songs on bootlegs and Imports in order to put the soundtrack together as one.

    A couple of weeks ago, I found the limited edition LP at a Record Store in Hamilton Ont.

    I think Cameron Crowe's Vinyl Productions had something to do wtih it's release. I guess there was only 25,000 copies pressed total.

    It's on Pink Fucking Viynl !!

    It also comes with an extra 45" red vinyl with a Demo version of "Don't be Shy" and and an instrumental of "If You Want To Sing Out" included with a copy of Cat Steven's handwritten lyrics to both songs.

    And If that wasn't enough to make you cream your shorts...There are also 2 movie posters and a 35 page booklet included in the package.

    Awesome release if you're lucky enough to find it.

    Believe me...It's worth every penny.

    Ed is most deffinately a fan of Harold and Maude... he mentioned it on his solo tour (San Diego atleast)....

    he didn't mention cat stevens in particular, although I do think he said his mom requested don't be shy for the san diego show (I could be wrong).

    I loved the songs so much at the show I checked out the movie. Yes its a bit off the wall...but what a great message that movie has!!

    I think somehow they all fit together... ITW the movie and soundtrack, and Ed covering songs from Harold and Maude...

    Seemed like it was personal for him. :)

    The soundtrack is by Cat Stevens and includes two songs, "Don't Be Shy" and "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out", that he composed specifically for the movie and that were unavailable for over a decade; they were eventually released in 1984 on the compilation Footsteps in the Dark. A vinyl LP soundtrack was released in Japan, though without the two songs Cat Stevens wrote for the film but including five songs not in the film ("Morning Has Broken," "Wild World," "Father & Son," "Lilywhite" and "Lady D'Arbanville"). The first official soundtrack to the film was released in December, 2007 on Vinyl Films Records as a vinyl-only limited edition release of 2500 copies. It contained a 30-page oral history of the making of the film, the most extensive series of interviews conducted on "Harold and Maude."

    I had no idea about this connection. Very cool.

    Guess I gotta rent this movie soon! I've read before that it comes with good recommendations.

    Apparently the rough cut of 'Into the Wild' had Cat Stevens songs in it, 'miles from nowhere' (one of em)

    the Film was given to Eddie who then inked some gems which Sean Penn used over Cats for the final cut

    Also Eddie and some other musicians (apparently) signed/sent a letter to have Cat Stevens inducted into the rock hall of fame (which just happened a couple weeks ago)

    It was a request from the late Johnny Ramone (on his death bed,so it has been said)

    Had a chance to catch this film on 35mm here in Sweden once, but couldn't attend.

    Never seen it. Maybe I should.

    EDDIE VEDDER:When I was 12, I remember seeing the movie, Harold And Maude, a film that is accompanied by several Cat Stevens songs. Cat’s voice represents the interior voice of the character throughout the movie, and he does it absolutely perfectly.

    It’s a perfect synergy between film and music, and it really inspired me to try writing for film. Take the final scene, where it looks like Harold is going to drive off the cliff, with the rain hitting the windshield, and you know how he feels. Suddenly they play “Trouble” by Cat Stevens, and it’s utterly overwhelming, heartbreaking. So seeing it work there made me think I could give it a go.

    I haven't seen the movie yet (but is it obscure?? I always hear about this film and have been made to feel like I'm a complete idiot for having never seen it myself, lol. I was under the impression that it's an incredibly famous movie). I keep meaning to catch it but it just hasn't come up. Nice to know that it has a good soundtrack. :)

    Oh and back in 2007? Eddie and Sean Penn were interviewed by Charlie Rose (episode30), Eddie mentions Harold and Maude. I guess on the PBS site the interview will be up someplace.

    It's maybe as obscure as I Love You, Alice B. Toklas (another not-TOO-well-known but favorite film of mine). I've caught both on our movie channels many times. Not necessarily well-known or popular, but definitely beloved.

    In H & G, Ruth Gordon kicked ass (you may remember her from Clint's "Any Which Way" films), as did Bud Cort. Leaves me a weeping, sniffling mess at the end every time.

    It was just a bittersweet, thoughtful, eccentric movie. Definitely worth your searching it out!

    (And, my husband and I were fortunate enough to be at that San Diego show the first time Don't Be Shy was sung. So pretty.)

    Wow I guess that WAS 2007 wasn't it. I remember I watched that when it aired and it feels like it was about a year ago.

    I think it's Glorified G live where he says That's ok man cause I love Mod. Anyway I always assumed it was mod... but now that you mention it maybe it was Maude. Interesting.

    oh yes, seriously... one of the best movies of all time....just buy it off of Amazon because it's one you need to have on hand

    I responded to 'High Fidelity 2000' quoting the lyrics to Glorified G, before noticing he'd mentioned the live version, not the standard version.
