The oil sands are complicated, like Neil Young himself

Anyone seen the 'Celebration At Big Sur' concert DVD? It was filmed in 1969 at the grounds of the Esalen Institute on a cliff top overlooking the Pacific. Some great footage of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.0

Just so we all get both sides of the story. Uncle Neil needs to practice what he preaches. Also maybe come up with an alternative. You know, besides funding terrorist organizations by buying oil from the middle east.
Just sayin'.0 -
Because running generators on bio-diesel means he doesn't practice what he preaches?Bennyorr4 said:http://www2.canada.com/calgaryherald/iphone/news/latest/story.html?id=9418854

I just read that 'blog' you posted. The author of that blog sounds like a petulant, annoying little turd, with a huge chip on his shoulder, sneaking around after Neil Young to try and uncover any little crumb to use against him.
I take it you don't like Neil Young?

No, I like Neil Young, I just dont agree with him. He and others like him are very hypocritical when it comes to this issue. I mean its all well and good to drive up north in his electric car but at the same time have a helicopter follow him up there to film him do so screams hypocrite. Also, what Neil doesn't want anyone to know is that he and others like him who protest the oil sands never report the facts about reclaimed land, SAGD and other good things that these oil companies do to try and minimize the "damage done" (NY refrence). All while they fly aroung in helicopters and planes to view the "devistation" from above. All I am really saying is that these protesters are usually uninformed and/or missinformed and they never seam to have an alternative. It just seams to be a PR, bandwagon, socially acceptable and "cool" thing to do. Lets face it, oil and our depenency on it is problematic but there really is no practical alternative as of right now. We all rely on oil in some way, shape or form and I personally would rather be getting my oil from Canada, which is one of, if not the safest environments on the planet to work in as opposed to the middle east, where the workers have to be on alert for terrorist attacks, kidnappings and war every day. If Neil and the like want to proest something they should stop polluting as well. Their carbon footprint is massive and just because his busses burn bio deisel does't mean they don't pollute the air and contribute to GHG's. Just the opposite. It is a myth that Bio Deisel is better for the environment. Biofuels are considered to be environmentally-friendly because they are renewable. But in order to grow enough of these crops for both food and fuel, large swaths of land around the world are being converted into crop fields for growing biofuels. Less trees = More GHG's. Not to mention the use of coal to poduce energy and its corilation with GHG's. Why doesnt Neil say anything about stopping that energy sector? Because it isn't socially acceptable or "hip" to protest that? Maybe he feels he can protest a Canadian energy sector becuse he was born there as opposed to bashing a largely American used energy and piss those hard working people off by threatening their livelyhoods. What do you think would happen if Neil gets his way? Does anyone ever think of that?
I think that is enough of a rant. Sorry but this shite is getting old. And as for the natives dieing up north, everyone who is living is dieing and natives typically kill themselves with booze, cigarettes and other drugs far earlier than the oilsands do.

Neil is fighting a war most of us can never touch. That includes big mouth environmentalist talker like me. Blah blah blah. Yeah, I've done my little part and I'll keep doing it until I croak but I'll never touch the lives NY does- never because there are damn few at his level talking it to that level . Really, think about it, damn few. He's older than I am and works harder than I do and I work hard but damn, that man is working. Give him what he needs I say and be thankful he's doing it- especially if you have kids or grand kids.
Whoa- sorry- big rant but there it is."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0 -
And here's an article that well articulates similar ideas to those I said above:

Actually I think if things are to ever change in regards to the oil sands it has to come from individuals ... not NY ... other than generating a few articles he really is not talked about ... and here is the problem, I am fairly far removed from the oil sands, used to be the heart of the big 3 and manufacturing in Canada, now manufacturing is severely crippled in our country. I can't tell you how many people in the last 2-3 years in this area that i've spoken with that have children or grandchildren or brothers or sisters or friends that are working in oil or natural gas in Alberta or Saskatchewan ... bottom line people need to feed themselves and want to live comfortably, big box stores does not allow that. Like somewhere said on here whats the alternative solution because no government is going to stop the oil sands too many jobs at stake.brianlux said:Neil is fighting a war most of us can never touch. It's also just a matter of time before we in Ontario go ahead with our own version of the oil sands ... the ring of fire

sadly we are being forced to become a resource based economy.I have certain rules I live by ... My First Rule ... I don't believe anything the government tells me ... George Carlin

Why is the issue of jobs always brought up as a way to justify resource extraction, polluting the planet and changing the climate to the point of this earth being inhospitable to humans? If we make our world unsuited for us in which to live, jobs become a mute point. Besides, more jobs could be created involving the development of renewable energy sources. As Yvon Chouinard once said, in a world not suited for human habitat there will be no social issues. Don't get me wrong, I do care about people's well being but lets be logical about this and take care of the place that sustains us and all other life.Post edited by brianlux on"It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0

Jobs are always an issue if your a politician. The first Prime Minister in Canada to stop natural resource development political career will be short lived. I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying it's an issue that politicians are faced with. There is no green energy economy about to emerge here in Canada to replace the manufacturing job lost, but apparently we have resources the world wants and these jobs pay well ... That's kind of the reality as of now. Electric cars/Hybrid cars are nice, but for most of are just not affordable ... And please none of this crap that they last 20/30 years ... In Ontario they'd last no longer than an internal combustion engine unless they manufactured them rust proof.I have certain rules I live by ... My First Rule ... Ya Brian, I'm a born and raised Albertan, who like many Albertans has worked in the oil industry at one time or another. Unfortunately his/her viewpoint is not in the minority around these parts.
But he/she doesn't speak for all of us.
