Help Us Save YouthCare’s Orion Center!
December 02 2013

We are combining forces with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and the Slog this holiday season to help raise money for the Orion Center, which houses homeless teens in Seattle WA. The Orion Center’s funding was slashed recently, and its young adult shelter was almost forced to shut down. While the County and the City of Seattle kicked in enough money to keep the Orion Center's programs going, the group needs to raise $100,000 to keep providing food, shelter, safety, and life alternatives to Seattle's most vulnerable population over the next year.

Pearl Jam fans! Together, we can help save the Orion Center! But with a competition! That's why the Slog is pitting Pearl Jam fans against Macklemore & Ryan Lewis against Slog fans! The fans that raise the most money for the Orion Center by December 24th WINS!

GO HERE TO DONATE! http://34068youthcare.thankyou4caring.o ... -donations

Share with your Friends and Family! Use the Twitter hashtag #TeamJam

Let's do this!

And if you donate at least $25 to the Orion Center right now, then forward the Slog your receipt at <!-- e --><a href="mailto:charity@thestranger.com">charity@thestranger.com</a><!-- e --> and your commenter handle, the Slog will give you a commenter tag on Slog that says PEARL JAM FAN!

Reissue 2000 more copies of Benny. Make them some random color people will go apeshit. $100 each = $200,000. Half to band, costs etc.. half to Youth care. Problem solved.

I made a donation, no Benny vinyl needed here. :)

I have no idea who Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are and what "the Slog" is or what a "handle" is (unless we're talking CB's) or what a "commenter handle" or "commenter tag" is , I don't Twitter and have never used a "hashtag" other than to denote a number (as I'm, I'm your #1 computer geek) but I do know what homeless is all about so I'm happy to donate to the Orion Center! :D

  • One would think that PJ could just flip the bill for this instead of asking their fans to spend more of their money. Doesn't PJ make enough money off its fans to spread its wealth around to this cause on its own? Last I checked, Vedder's net worth alone is in the ballpark of $80+ million. What a joke.

Do you have any idea how many other great causes Eddie Vedder supports, either with his time or financially? I personally don't, but what that means is he could be pretty damn philanthropic, and I don't think we'd ever really know. Could just be he knows what he wants to support and doesn't deviate all that often, who knows!

Would love to donate to Youthcare Seattle, but donation site doesn't recognise my country (only US, Canada & Ireland). I've googled to try and find an alternative way to donate (separate to the competition) but can't find one. Any ideas?

 Sounds like something my cat would eat.

Back to the subject at hand, in the past I've known kids in the Seattle area who were basically homeless. Helping out the Orion Center is a good thing and feels good! We also donate to local groups here in my home town that do the same kind of work. That feels good too!

  • Mmkay fellow 10c-ers.

Here are the latest stats that I saw. Remember first this is about raising money for Orion Center...donations are at 66% of goal ( I wonder if that counts matching...my company matches. I'll ask the slog peeps.).

I am a little competitive though and like to win... so donate and share and give 'em a direct link for PJ's giving page when you do! Mackelmore is cute and all but...

Just made my donation! Bump for a great cause - if you have the means, please show your support.

The way I see it, not everyone is lucky enough to buy the sevens set or travel to see shows - we had an amazing PJ year (wrigley and three fall shows) so instead of buying gifts and crap for each other for xmas, my husband and i are picking 3 charities each to donate to.

Orion Center gets financial boost from Macklemore, Pearl Jam fans
    by KING 5 News
Posted on December 12, 2013 at 6:17 PM

A month ago it looked like the Orion Center would have to close its doors to its overnight youth shelter. The Seattle shelter for teens and young adults lost 1.2 million dollars in funding due to the federal sequestration, but now it's receiving a financial shot in the arm by two of Seattle's hottest musical groups.

I see where you're coming from (although the tone was a bit harsh), but it's not only about "flipping the bill". sometimes it's about awareness and getting people involved and active in the community so they become passionate about it and won't let it happen again.

Agreed. The money is only part of it, raising awareness is huge. Plus, I bet they already donate or are planning to, they just aren't the kind of people who toot their own horn. This is just another avenue to raise funds and awareness which can only be a good thing. They aren't forcing us to donate at gunpoint, not interested in participating just move right on along.

Agree. You never know who/what causes people donate to already. This is about awareness in addition to funding. I see no harm in their helping an organization that may have asked for their help. In some way making a healthy competition between Mackelmore/Slog/PJ fans could be fun motivator as well. Why not? Try not to judge. The intentions are good. We're lucky, whatever any of us makes or doesn't make to have the support of people who love us, roofs over our heads, jobs, etc. Imagine being a kid who doesn't have that. You just need support. Hopefully it comes from a healthy place (people who volunteer or share what they can) vs. turning to less healthy ways of getting what you need (selling drugs, gangs), or just suffering and not having any of it. Try to think of it that way. If giving makes you feel good, do it. If you can't or don't want to give to this particular cause or you have already given to another, that is okay too.
