I'm re-watching the '92 PJ MTV Unplugged Concert ....

..... from March and I'm just very curious: Did anyone here currently on the 10C boards / forums (non-Pearl Jam employed) attend that show? Would love to get some insight as to how that all went down from a current / old-school fan's perspective. If you were at the taping, how'd you get in, seat location, how'd you get tix, etc, etc? Watching it tonight, and it just brought back so many memories for me - specifically being a freshman in high school and watching this live on MTV in Lower Merion, PA, on the 22" square brick of a TV with maybe 10 cable channels, and with my mind being blown, goosebumps everywhere. That happened again tonight, which is why I'm posting this topic. I guess, even though I know the answer(s) are buried deep down inside the forum pages somewhere on this site, I just want to hear / read and re-vsisit everyone's stories and memories besides mine. Quite a life achievement, if you were there, if you ask me.....

Sadly I wasn't at the show however, I remember watching it for the first time on a bootleg VHS back in the early 90s. The tape quality was terrible, it had been copied so many times but, I didn't care. I was happy to see it(no MTV in Canada back then.) On a side note, a friend of mine saw pj rehearse for their first ever appearance on Saturday Night Live. He was on a school trip/tour. The bastard didn't even know about pj at the time. I bug him to this very day and tell him, "do you know how f**king lucky you were?" I also would love to here some stories from people who were there. Thanks.
  • I watched the first broadcast on MTv (it certainly wasn't live). Unplugged was taking off as a great new format. I remember the great Elliot Easton (The Cars) with a singer I don't remember and the legendary Paul McCartney). I started recording these with the Paulie Mac show and copying them to cassette - easy to listen to, easy to copy and share.

And then there was Pearl Jam. I didn't set my VCR to record their broadcast but I got home late (didn't it air at 10:00p on the west coast?). We had heard MTv had put some rules in place - no swearing and stay seated. Easy rules. I was working at a west coast live video show at the time. But Pearl Jam busted right through the alleged "stay seated" rule. I can't confirm this rule but I have tried, still I distinctly remember this. Stage diving was still very strong (Jane's Addiction shows and any punk rock show we went to at the time - remember the Vandals?). So when Eddie "fell" off his chair and Jeff stood on the bass drum, well, that was just who we were, and that's what Pearl Jam represented. I've always been a big fan of Jeff Ament (I'm a graphic artist now and a used-to-be bass player).

I did record a rebroadcast of the show and recorded it to cassette. I was pretty popular at the time for having some great recordings that I shared - friends, people who left notes on my car at school (Cal Poly, Pomona) 'cos I had a stickman on my rear window for a while, an ex-girlfriend, girlfriends who became exes, girls who were friends but I wished it were more.

Well, in conclusion, it was a golden moment. I remember PJ had just come back from a European tour during which they exploded over here. I think their instruments were rented - as any guitarist or bassist that has ever played on somebody else's guitar, it's just different and not as fluid as your own. What PJ did that night was pure gold. We knew it then. I have not seen or listened to the complete show in over 15 years. My cassettes and VHS tapes are long gone. This past weekend I finally ordered the Ten mondo-huge remaster and I'm looking forward to a trip backwards. This 2013 tour revitalized my absolute respect and love for this band. I just watched PJ20 last weekend for the first time.

We were there, maybe not there for everything, but we were part of the time. PJ has continued the passion without the youthful over-the-top exuberance (stage dives). Thank God for Pearl Jam.

Two great replies. Would love to hear from anyone that was there, or knew someone that attended. I believe PJ Unplugged was the start of PJ as we know them today.
