Album suggestions for a Miles Davis newbie?

Hey Miles Davis fans! I've always enjoyed most of what little (very little) Miles Davis stuff that I've heard, and have always meant to explore his music more thoroughly but never got around to it. So no time like the present. But I don't know where to start. There are a LOT of albums out there it seems, and I don't know what to pick up (talking vinyl). And I have heard a couple of songs that sound too loungey for my taste, so want to avoid whatever has a lot of that (I.e. I find Kind of Blue to be more in that vein, to give you an idea of what I mean by that.... and if most of his stuff is a lot like that album, then my new discovery is that Miles probably isn't for me in the long run, but at least there is a Miles Davis album thread now :P). Any album suggestions? Thank you very much!

Well, that is the gold standard, but she indicated she wanted something different. I agree you gotta have KoB, but if you're looking for something different, Bitches is a great entry point. Of course it's a double, so good luck finding it on vinyl (though I havent really looked). So, she can start with Bitches and then realize she has to have KoB.

Yeah, as i mentioned, Kind of Blue isn't quite up my alley. Just a little too smooth for me (not that it's bad of course) ... i think i'm looking for his slightly "uglier" work? I know i've heard some, but unfortunately I have no idea what any of it was called.boyo79 wrote:Kind Of Blue. It is fantastic. Only Miles Davis record I own. You're welcome.
Live-Evil
The Bootleg series vol 2 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Miles-Davis-Qui ... iles+davis)
In a Silent Way - This album was where Miles first started experimenting with electric instruments that would eventually lead to Bitches Brew. More sparse and slow in it's build up but might be a interesting listen all the same.0
