Anyway, didn't someone say that their line would come down sometime during the show? At 9 or 9:30 or something? And there is an opener. People who won't cross would only miss part of the show if that's true. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0

Are supposed to just instantly support these stage hands? Just because they belong to a union?
Sorry, I don't buy that.
Clearly you dont buy that.....its very clear from your posts you are anti union and dont believe in or havent experienced the benefits that they can bring therefore you clearly wont understand the moral dilemma that some people who do believe in unions will face when they go to this gig.
You talk about the people on $5 an hour and the fact they arent members as if being paid $5 an hour is socially acceptable.....the level of poverty in the US is disgraceful given the wealth in the country and I would suggest if more people were in unions perhaps your minimum wage would be higher! Unions are long standing in most European countries and are recognised as helping lead to higher wages overall that allow people more money to live as well as work. In Ireland the trade unions have a seat on most government reviews and they work on behalf of all as advocates for workers.
I think this concert is a moral dilemma that Pearl Jam as a band will also face given their socialist tendencies. Does this mean people will walk away from the gig......no it doesnt....each person will make their own decision. Does this mean that people wont feel guilty crossing the picket line....no it doesnt!
Could people attending show solidarity in a different way....yes they could! I think someone is already advocating a boycot of consessions.0 -
It just occurred to me, actually, that if the line is in fact coming down at 9 or 9:30, then PJ could easily just delay the start of the show - that would be the best decision on their part IMO. Is there a curfew? If there is, they would probably be fine with paying a fine if there is one. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. I would recommend to anyone that if something they do that is reasonably under their control makes them feel guilty then they should't do it... But i absolutely agree with you about the important role that unions play; many don't consider or appreciate that. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Well said. A rising tide floats all boats. People seem to forget that the majority of workplace rights and benefits enjoyed by all workers were a result of labor unions.
While I do understand the resentment non-union workers have towards the higher pay and benefits enjoyed by some union employees, I think the resentment is shortsighted. People look at labor unions and say you make more money than me so I want you to have your pay and benefits cut to the same level as mine. Instead they should be looking to their own employers and saying I deserve as much as those other guys do.
As members of the 99% we should keep in mind that its a race to the top... not a race to the bottom. The 1% has done an excellent job of brainwashing the middle class working into thinking that the union worker is responsible for their economic problems.Post edited by on2legs on1996: Randall's Island 2 1998: East Rutherford | MSG 1 & 2 2000: Cincinnati | Columbus | Jones Beach 1, 2, & 3 | Boston 1 | Camden 1 & 2 2003: Philadelphia | Uniondale | MSG 1 & 2 | Holmdel 2005: Atlantic City 1 2006: Camden 1 | East Rutherford 1 & 2 2008: Camden 1 & 2 | MSG 1 & 2 (#25) | Newark (EV) 2009: Philadelphia 1, 2 & 4 2010: Newark | MSG 1 & 2 2011: Toronto 1 2013: Wrigley Field | Brooklyn 2 | Philadelphia 1 & 2 | Baltimore 2015: Central Park 2016: Philadelphia 1 & 2 | MSG 1 & 2 | Fenway Park 2 | MSG (TOTD) 2017: Brooklyn (RnR HOF) 2020: MSG | Asbury Park 2021: Asbury Park 2022: MSG | Camden | Nashville 2024: MSG 1 & 2 (#50) | Philadelphia 1 & 2 | Baltimore 2025: Raleigh0 -

I believe also that the members of Pearl Jam belong to some sort of performing arts union or songwriting union...in the same way actors belong to the screen actors guild. Anit-union folks should probably just boycott the band altogether.
Unions still have a major role in society to ensure that workers can at least earn a fair wage, benefits, job protection, etc. My friend thinks that unions have done their jobs so now they have to go. She is very out of touch regarding those issues. Anyway, the government in BC is all about union busting and basically ignored all the union contracts in the province and imposed laws and changes that violate the collective agreements. This has led to serious and frequent labour disruption throughout the province.
Contracting out is a huge issue, too. This seems to be what is going on at the LA PJ venue. Where there is a collective agreement in place, there are limits to the number of contracted out employees working on a job site. I would think that EVERYONE who is a union member or any non-union worker for that matter, would not tolerate being replaced (for however long) by someone less qualified and experienced getting paid less money. I think that in most union shops that this would be considered illegal. You can't just replace a union member with no notice and no union consultation with cheaper non-union workers. It doesn't sound like in LA they were planning on picketing as they probably all thought they would be working tonight and tomorrow. They are picketing because they were REPLACED...of course, if they were already on strike, that would be a different matter...and they should be operating on essential services levels.
PJSoul and I are mostly on the same page....be philanthropic0 -

As a proud union family, we would urge all of you to not cross the picket line. The band & their fans are being put in danger by USC's greed & careless disregard for the band & their fan's safety!. I have personally seen what can happen. At the first Outside Lands concert, the promoter hired non-trained, non-local, non-union carnies to set up the show & only brought in a tiny union crew for the show day. THIS is why Radiohead's equipment melted & the band almost got electrocuted.Think of that! $ vs. the life of your favorite band... Tom Petty's sound blew 3 times. Why? They chose to use construction generators for stage power because it was cheaper & non trained crew because it was cheaper ! My husband underwent 2 years of college level studies on top of his theater degree to learn all there is to set up/run/take down shows safely. I am sure that the families of Radiohead's drum tech who died in Canada in the stage collapse wish safe practices had been followed! Thank god the union is strong where I'm seeing the show! I can relax & have fun without worrying that the band &/or patrons might be put at risk for the love of the almighty dollar.

So i agree with the picket line thought process. I am just confused. When the nurses go on strike the janitors who are also union still have to work at the same hospital. Are the janitors crossing the picket line? I'd say they are not. They are not doing the nurses' job. Same with pearl jam. They are not doing the scab work. or am i missing something here?8/29/00*5/2/03*7/2/03*7/3/03*7/11/03*9/28/04*5/24/06*6/28/08*5/15/10*5/17/10* 10/16/13*10/25/13* 4/28/16*4/28/16*8/5/16*8/7/16 EV 6/15/11 Brad 10/27/020

I think we all here would agree that Pearl Jam is an essential service as well!!!
No one could have predicted there would be union issues day of the concert when they entered the lotto for tickets back in July... I don't think one ticket holder is going to get there, see the line, and not go in. This sounds like something that took issue recently and that's beyond all our control as ticket purchasers 4 months ago. I mean, you can go ahead and waste $150 and miss out on one of the great concerts on one of the great tours ever by this band... but tell me who is the fool then?ABQ 93, Las Cruces 95, ABQ 98, Bridge School 10/30/99, Lubbock 00, ABQ 00, Denver 03, State College 03, San Diego 03, Vegas 03, PHX 03, D.C. 03, Camden 7/5/03, NYC 7/8/03 + 7/9/03, Vegas 06, San Francisco 7/15/06 + 7/16/06 + 7/18/06, Kansas City 10, [EV:ABQ 11/6/12], Chicago 13, PHX 13, Denver 14--PJ24!, Telluride 16, Chicago 8/20/16, Chicago 8/18/18, Phoenix 22, Denver 22, Vegas 5/16/24
