San Diego

So I will be driving down to the San Diego show from LA. I plan to get a hotel for the night. But I'm looking for some advice as to where to stay and hang out before/after the show.
It doesn't look like the arena is in the downtown area. So I wasn't sure if I should stay downtown or closer to the arena. Is there public transit between downtown and the arena?
Any insight would be great. We'll be getting into town around 1pm day of show.

I'm traveling to SD for this show too (but from Miami!) and will be staying in the Downtown area. Sadly, I'm not very familiar with the city to offer you info on that. Buuuut, I do know there's a Wishlist Foundation pre-party at:
Lazy Dog Mission Valley
1202 Camino Del Rio N, San Diego, California 92108
Hope to see you there!
But to your question, San Diego has an excellent trolley system that drops you right off at SDSU. You can stay downtown or Hotel Circle along Interstate 8 where there are trolley stops in both locations. And frankly parking at SDSU is kind of a bear so it's probably better to leave your car at the trolley stop and take transit in.

Hotel Circle is about 5 miles west of the arena and has a ton of affordable options...unfortunately, there's not much to do in the area. Downtown will be a little further (8 miles or so south/west) but more expensive.
The following is from the Viejas Arena Web Site:
Facility Address:
Viejas Arena, 5500 Canyon Crest Drive, San Diego, CA 92182-4210
Trolley Information
Service to San Diego State University is provided by San Diego Trolley's Green Line. For selected special events including concerts and SDSU basketball, extra service will be operated after the event. Most concerts will end by 11:00 p.m. and extra eastbound trains will depart at 11:22 p.m. and 11:52 p.m. Westbound service will operate a normal schedule with the last train departing toward Old Town at 11:47 p.m.
Viejas Arena is west of the San Diego State University Transit Center.
For more details on a special event, please check the special event timetable.

FYI. Those trolleys are usually packed after an event!
There is a parking lot across the street from the venue that will undoubtedly get packed to capacity. You might save yourself the hassle and park on the other side of campus where parking is more plentiful (10 minute walk) Keep in mind that it will likely be raining and school is in session so parking could be a bit hectic. Rain in San Diego makes a cluster fuck of the roads every damn time. Give yourself some extra time.
