I'm fortunate enough to have seen both bands with Matt, he's truly among the top two drummers in the world. Personally I'm really pleased he's chose to concentrate his efforts on PJ as my introductory album was Avocado, so Pearl Jam without Matt, at least for me, is inconceivable.
Chris Cornell is amazing enough to carry any band, Soundgarden will still be a force to be reckoned with next year.

My issue with all this is that it would have made more sense for Soundgarden to postpone the 2014 shows (or not have booked them at all). There is no Soundgarden without Matt Cameron. Let Matt spend some time with his family and fulfill what he has committed to with PJ in 2014, then get back to where he is best in Soundgarden for 2015. Makes sense to me anyway.
And all this shit about him "choosing PJ over Soungarden" in this thread... someone even said "we won" He had already committed time to PJ, then had to choose between Soundgarden or family. I massively respect him for needing and choosing to spend quality time with his family. In the long run, I hope for the pure reason of not wasting his talent that he can dedicate himself to Soundgarden as much as possible. In PJ, he's basically a backing musician for what has become a middle of the road rock band, which is a massive shame.
Wow, I haven't disagreed so strongly with so many points made in one post for a long time.
Clearly, the band itself totally disagrees with you about them not even existing without Matt, because they are going ahead without him.I guess they would know. In any case, i suspect that they will find another killer drummer and everyone will say it sounds great , even if they do miss Matt. This is not going to ruin the show. I understand the disappointment, but this does not mean the death of SG. I mean fuck, if anyone knows how a band can move along after a change with the drummer, it should be a PJ fan..... although in all fairness, you don't sound like one of those. Anyway, SG has done one okay album amd one tour in 16 years... how does anyone even think they really know what SG is or isn't at this point anyway??
Yes, he did choose Pearl Jam over Soundgarden. If he hadn't he would be spending 2014 with SG and his family, not PJ and his family.
A backing musician for a middle of the road band? We can leave alone the middle of the road comment because that is just pure opinion (one that seems ludicrous, especially coming from someone who is a paying member of their fan club and is telling this to others who you know perfectly well think PJ is one of the greatest bands of all time, but okay buddy. I'm sure 10c and Pearl Jam appreciate your odd use of your cash no matter how you feel about them). But how in the fuck do you think the only drummer in a rock band where all the members are known to be very collaborative is a backup musician? That makes zero sense.

I am a Soundgarden fan, but if it makes you feel any better, I did see them in February and it was one of the worst shows of my life... although I must admit, Matt was actually the best part about it!

In a good venue, we couldn't even really hear the vocals at all, the guitars were completely muddled, and they all just stood there in a boring kind of way (plus there was a malfunctioning curtain slowly opening and closing over their backdrop screen the whole show). So many profound problems, and for some reason they didn't care enough to do anything about it - they just decided to pretend that everything was cool - which really pissed me off. And Chris made some snotty comment about it not being GA... um, dude, YOU are the ones who picked the venue, and you chose an opera house!! Now ypu're going tonact like we suck somehow because we've been forced into seats?? The whole thing was a massive disappointment.

One of my friends got to go to a show over the summer (my parents forced me to go to my college graduation instead- I'm still angry about it), and he said that he was disappointed too. I feel like they're really hit or miss live, but I'd like to see them anyway. Not without Matt though, because he always seems to be the highlight even if the rest of the show isn't great.

Saw SG in January for the 1st time, it was a great show, and seeing the four of them together meant a lot (& yes, Matt was the highlight of the show). I would be disappointed if I were going to see them & MC was not drumming for them. I'm sure his replacement will do an adequate job, but let's face it, he's an integral part of the band, that fact would always be looming over the show for me.
(I saw A Perfect Circle for the 5th time in 2011, and it was without Josh Freese; as one of my favorite members of the band, that was a big disappointment. . . . his replacement was great, but he wasn't Josh Freese)
Regarding the guy who referred to PJ as a middle of the road band:
I've seen PJ 12 times, and will go to great lengths to see them again and again. I saw Soundgarden for the 1st time this year, and am not concerned if I never see them again. It was great to scratch the itch / add them to my list, but as far as live experiences go, they can't hold a candle to a PJ show.
Soundgarden is one of my all time favorites, and I do think they write more interesting songs than PJ (Not trying to troll here, just expressing my opinion) but I think PJ is a better overall band / experience.
(plus they've been consistent for 22+ years, SG could break up tomorrow - WTF wouldn't he choose PJ?)
Just my $0.02
(SG should hit up Tim Alexander from Primus, I would think he could fill in nicely)
It is frustrating when in this level of business with huge assets and this amount of profit, managerial problems,in this case proper tour planning somehow jeopardize the brandname which is literally the fundamental of the business. Especially with Soundgarden it's widely known, that organizational issues alongside with the band's dynamics led to their disbandment. As far as PJ, it is evident since the 180 degree turn in their commercial strategy in 2006, they are not willing to sacrifice a dollar nor a minute of a robotically programmed plan. Τhe result was this announcement from Matt Cameron's press office to us, Soundgarden "fans", that led to some kind of sentimentalism about which band he "prefers"or who of us will ''get the most'' of him. In my opinion this debate is useless. Because in that level of professionalism choices usually are made in a less sentimental (or even artistic) scale of criteria.
Just for fun though... Matt Cameron belongs with Soundgarden, also Pearl Jam should have been a four piece (without McCready and with Jack Irons)

What if they just feel like this is what they want to do because they enjoy doing the SG thing and decided it would still be fun without Matt for a little while? Theh probably thought it wouldn't do the band any good to disappear only a year after they reimmerged, and at the same time fully understand that Matt has his PJ thing to do. This is hardly unprecidented. Musicians step put of their bands and others step in all the time. It's just how it goes. I can't believe that people think all of SG should come to a grinding halt only a hear after their come back album just because Matt decided that his main career as PJ's drummer takes precedence and he needs to temporarily step aside. I also can't believe that people think allnof PJ should work their schedule during album release tours to accommodate Soundgarden or just MC (not that MC would be so clueless as to expect such a thing). Thank god actual musicians in the industry know better, or else Pearl Jam would have been dead in 1998 at the latest.
No clue what the McCready comment's about...

I think this has the most to do with the fact that the other SG members are really into SG again now and don't want to just sit at home anymore while Matt is off with PJ. Plus, SG are huge Ozzy fans, supposedly years ago Cornell wrote a bunch of songs and gave them to Ozzy but he didn't take them and they wound up being SG songs. So you can't say "no" to that offer. And Matt probably has a contractual obligation to tour with PJ (for now) anyways.
But at the same time, there is likely a bigger picture question going on here - I mean, SG sat on their hands patiently off and on for the last couple of years while Matt did his thing with PJ. Matt supposedly was a driving force behind SG playing again; but SG got to touring, and they like it, and they want to keep doing it, and it begs the arrival of the inevitable crossroads where now they're into it and the time demands are significant for a band that wants to keep playing and Matt has to pick between the two.
Its not fair to Kim and Ben, and SG fans, who have been increasingly loving life lately to sit around holding their nuts through 2014 while Matt is doting around the globe with PJ. I think that as much as the SG faithfull think SG can't go on without Matt C; they will probably find that actually they can, and will probably need to. SG will probably want to play more in 2014, supposedly they've already turned down tons of shows over the last few years because of Matt's PJ obligations; so with a new filling-in drummer, and invites for dates, and positive momentum; unless PJ decides to take another 4 year hiatus , we're probably going to have this same question again at the end of 2014. Maybe that's when Matt's contract renews with PJ, who knows.
At this point, if I had to guess, I would think that Matt is probably plenty content with PJ. He and PJ probably have more in common now than he and the SG guys do. Kim and Ben sat on the sidelines for like 15 years; Ben in particular had a very rough going while SG was not active. But Matt on the other hand has been romping around with PJ, cushily touring the globe in a well-heeled armada of designer transportation vehicles and five-star accommodations, being paid handsomely, playing long shows, yes, but in a dumbed-down/punching-the-clock style of play. Not the deep soul-searching of an intangible spirit emitting their pulsating artistry through their phyiscal-trasmission-vessel; but rather a corporate office park cubicle hobbit brainlessly blobbing out the same effortless 8-hour workday, 5 hours of which consist of eating, dilly-dallying, wandering, and defecating; content in their job security, unmotivated to challenge themselves, and unaccountable for producing drivel, being revered as a musical god even though the percussion line for every live PJ song has now been molded into the same overly uptempo generic 4/4 metronome sound and deemed not only acceptable but visionary because most PJ fans are musically ignorant. But its not the employee's fault, its the corporation. That's what they produce. That's what their customers demand. But why would anyone want to give that up? Even Kent Brockman kept his job as Springfield's news anchor after winning the lottery. He's a journalist , people.
But I hope Matt proves me wrong and picks SG. I mean, LB had zero Matt C songs on it. Maybe PJ can try to find a new drummer that will breathe some new creative life into their epic 3-non-consecutive weeks out of the last 4 year studio sessions.
Or maybe not.
But either way, good for SG to keep going. The world needs a band out there with some balls in the studio.

I understand you're gutted by Matt's decision; but your condescending and insulting words to fans and the band are uncalled for.
i love both bands...mike mccready & chris cornell being my personal favs from each...and as fan of both...i look at it like this... well either way matt is gonna tour to support each bands albums. eddie and chris can do their solo tours. heck ben just did a solo album and so did stone...so it a timing thing...drummer, timing go figure...anyway as a pearl jam fan he has to tour for lightning bolt, that's the right way to go. but as a soundgarden fan, i think were more fearful, and rightfully so. he's a bigger part of that band, more of a driving force. i dont think itd be the same without em. he's not just a typical drummer with soundgarden...people are right when they bring up his creativity and and passion when playing with that band. dont get me wrong hes good with pearl jam too, but with soundgarden i feel its another level for his playing. i hope he can balance all this with two bands. good luck to em and im just hoping for more soundgarden albums and tours with him in the band. other than that, waiting for those midwest lightning bolt tour dates, been jealous of what ive been seeing. and glad we have these messageboards cuz people at work and facebook and just in the general area, not enough grunge fans...sad when kids dont know who kurt cobain is...unreal. ok im rambling...time to sleep.

If I had to choose I'd see PJ without Matt over SG without Matt any day. He's easily replaceable in Pearl Jam, but not in Soundgarden. Just how I feel. Call me crazy but I think it would be kind of awesome if Pearl Jam toured with a new drummer for a bit, or had two or three dudes hop on tour at different times. Give Jack a leg. I don't know, I think it would be fun. Frankly, the Pearl Jam songs with more interesting drumming are the ones I like Matt least on anyway. But JCP? Matt Cameron all the fucking way.

Haha, that would definitely be interesting.
Also, I think Matt's an awesome dude and great in PJ so it's not a knock against him but I just don't think he's as integral to Pearl Jam's sound as he is to Soundgarden's.
That said, my pick for his replacement in Soundgarden would be BRANN DAILOR from Mastodon (one of the best bands on the planet). He's been my favorite drummer for years now and would fucking wipe the floor with anything they threw at him.

PS
SG > PJ, and yes it is a competition, o'doyle rules
I cant get through this, anyone care to summarise?

Chris Cornell is amazing enough to carry any band, Soundgarden will still be a force to be reckoned with next year.

It is a stinky situation for Soundgarden,
and replacing your drummer for a tour seems like kind've a lame thing to do.
I'm not pooin' on Matt.
It is what it is, and you can't be everywhere and do everything.
But Soundgarden just ain't Soundgarden without him.
:(
If I opened it now would you not understand?
Bingo!

Yes! Yes! Yes!
Just for fun though... Matt Cameron belongs with Soundgarden, also Pearl Jam should have been a four piece (without McCready and with Jack Irons)
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
No clue what the McCready comment's about...

I understand you're gutted by Matt's decision; but your condescending and insulting words to fans and the band are uncalled for.
