Let's talk about Pendulum...

An interesting fact about Pendulum, is that it's leftover from the Backspacer sessions. I am pretty certain it was recorded at the same time, if not, it was definetly from those sessions.

This seems to be missed by most, as its not discussed much when we are talking about the song.

I had a few thoughts and wondered what everyone else thought.

Would this song have made backspacer better? Worse?

If it had been released in 2009, do you think it would have opened nearly every show (as it has this tour)?

If Pendulum was not on Lightning Bolt, would you like it or not?

How could they hold onto a song THIS good for so long? Imagine had It been released between albums, much like Ole.

I really love this song, and don't mind it opening each show, since they are following it with a traditional opener. I feel after this tour we may not see it as much, and will be sought after much like Oceans or Hard To Imagine.

What are your thoughts? Discuss!

  • Very hard for me to comprehend it as part of Backspacer sessions but i'm not too knowlegeable about these things. I wouldhave loved it whenever it was released but it seems to fit much better on LB. I think it's a terrific oprner, and like ypu think it will be a much desired one in the future. It's one of the songs that is keeping me in awe of this band and their growth and progression.

Love this song. Loved hearing it 4 times this year and love that they follow it with a traditional opener so, to me, pendulum feels like a bonus song. I think it's waaaay better than anything on backspacer and would never have fit there bc it has multi dimensional depth and darkness...an ambiguity that is not the right feel for the straightforward simplicity of backspacer. I feel like Pendulum is the opposite of Backspacer. Hard to believe they were born at the same time

Yeah, I guess this is like "Down" being recorded during Riot Act sessions (at least, that's what I recall from Lost Dogs notes) -- great song, would not have fit on Backspacer at all.

I am glad they decided to release it on an album, though. It's a great, interesting song. I know there have been some complaints about it opening every show, but frankly that was not an issue for me. I think it stands up/ holds up better than most of the Backspacer songs, so hearing it open all three shows I saw this tour did not leave me wanting to be late to my seat; I enjoyed it each time.

May I ask where you're getting your sources from? Because I heard from an interview of the band that Pendulum was a spur of the moment things that happened between Stone and Jeff that came about during the second wave of recording....

I saw multiple places online saying it is a leftover from Backspacer. I had to look because I couldn't believe it myself. Alternative nation says Mike mentioned that in an interview as well. I'm pretty shocked, sounds nothing like the mood on Backspacer. Goes to show that many different ideas can be floating around at these sessions and some rogue ones may just be left out and put on the shelf.

Did they leave it off of Backspacer because it just didnt fit the flow?

Did they realize it was to good to waste on that record?

What did they leave off of this record?

Best song on the record. Don't care what session it came from. Love my dark, brooding Pearl Jam!

I love the idea of Pendulum as an opener, I will probably see that for myself in San Diego her in 2 weeks. However when I first heard the song I envisioned PJ turning this thing into a live jam session going on for like 8m between 2 versus. I think the way it is on the album it ends way too soon. Should have been at least one more verse before the ah ah ah stuff starts. Someday I think it may become a rarity in an encore as an extended limited edition. Like a nice long crazy mary or something (pass the bottle, will ya?)
  • I knew after my first time through LB that Pendulum was my favorite on the new release. Not sure where it would have fit on Backspacer but I think its perfect for Lightening Bolt. Honestly it's so unlike anything else they've ever done, I'm just happy they released it.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the Worcester poster done by Brad Klausen, it's bad ass. The artwork was inspired by the song and is a must have if your a fan of the song. As of the other day you could still pick up an AP version from his website.

Had a chance to see them in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Charlottesville and they opened with Pendulum each show but I loved it. Agree that it's great that they play a traditional opener to follow and they actually followed with Hard to Imagine in Baltimore, a song I've been chasing to see live since it was released.

Thanks PJ, love you guys and keep rockin!

    The article here - http://www.stereogum.com/1519972/qa-pea ... interview/

    Specifically..

"STEREOGUM: What stuff dates back to the first session?

STONE GOSSARD: “Sirens.” “Infallible.” “Getaway.” I think “Pendulum” is maybe a song that was actually recorded for the Backspacer session. That’s probably the oldest song on the record. The new ones we recorded were “Mind Your Manners,” “Lightning Bolt,” Let the Records Play,” “Yellow Moon.” “My Father’s Son” is a new one, too. “Swallowed Whole.” I think it benefitted us, that wait."

I really love this song, easily one of my faves off of 'Lightning Bolt'...
Craziest thing today at work cranking tunes - on shuffle...'Pendulum' plays...followed by...'Undone'...a song I've listened to countless times, wished to see (still haven't  ) and really dig...
Well you know the pendulum throws
Farther out to the one side, swinging
Has to sweep back the other way

I can't begin to tell you how perfect 'Undone' was after 'Pendulum' then the realization of why I love the song with a great lyric from 'Undone', that I have sung at the top of my horrible voice - TODAY - made all the sense in the world for me.
PLUS made me love both songs even more
I hope the day I get lucky enough to see 'Pendulum' (San Diego in 15 days) that 'Undone' follows it...I could have full meltdown in GA :)

Heard that just the other day as well!

I'm enjoying seeing all the love for pendulum. I really really enjoy it!

I make my own mini playlist and it always has Pendulum, Yellow Moon, Infallible.

I've listened to it so many times that way that as pendulum ends I always expect yellow moon to start.

"I'm in the fire, but I'm still cold.." I love that line! It's almost cliche but works great for a dark, mood setting song.
  • It was an immediate favorite for me when I listened through the album the first time, but my interest has waned a bit. I love the music, love the melody, love the lyrics... but I almost feel like it's unfinished, like it ends prematurely and doesn't fully develop like it could.
"You are everything, and everything is you. Me, you... you, me -- it's all related."

Unlike anything PJ has ever recorded, yet for some reason I could totally hear it fitting in on Binaural. Incredible song...says so little, but says so much!

"Can't know what's high, til you've been down so low." I can relate a lot.
"Sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith."

I love Pendulum, together with Infallible they are my favorites on LB. I don't think it would have fit well on BS, and that is probably why they left it out.

    Brilliant brooding song.

I could see it fitting on Riot Act maybe, which is darker.
