How Badass is "My Father's Son"!!!???!!!
This song friggin rocks!!! It is very reminiscent of early pearl jam intensity to me. .. it reminds me of "Why Go" in some ways. .. though obviously a very different track. I really enjoy the way the song rides Jeff's bass line. .. and I think this is Eddie firing on all cylinders. .. vocal delivery is so dynamic and intense.
To me... "Mind Your Manners", "My Father's Son", and "Yellow Moon" are the most pure Pearl Jam songs on the album. .. if the album were more full of songs as intense as"Mind Your Manners" and "My Father's Son"... I think we would have another classic on our hands. .. (Some of the other slower tracks are a bit underwhelming to me, but hey. .. asking for perfection all the time is a pretty tall order)
Good work boys. .. thanks for blowing my mind once again. .. keep up the good work. .. I'm confident you will.
* Someone below mentioned the bridge of the song being one of the best in memory. .. I concur. .. I find the bridge to be a very clever and interesting choice. .. I love the way Eddie says "UN-HEEEAALED!!!"..
*Someone else below mentioned that they expected the song to be deeper given the title. . I actually had a similar initial reaction... it seemed like just the voice of a bitter unforgiving son at first. .. but then I started to just think about how deep the scars from a missing parent can be and Ed's angst seems more and more appropriate.

I share your enthusiasm for this song! It is one of my favourites on the album, at first I wasn't sure what to make of it!?
I've heard mixed feelings about this song around these traps though!Melbourne #1 '98

I agree! My Father's Son is one of my favourites too...The bass riff is awesome!
However I disagree with you on Yellow Moon - that's definitely my least favourite on the album!0 -
Pass - MFS - LTRP and SBM are my least favorite on the album.0

I have to say, I often skip this one. Just can't seem to get into it.
Personally, I was expecting something deeper given the title, and after seeing the ESPN spot with Ed and Steve Gleason. I guess I was hoping for something more like a "Release 2" whereas the song tends to remind me of Johnny Guitar instead.
Perhaps I am a victim of my own expectations.0 -
I am shocked at how anyone can skip this track! It is one of my favorites on the record... SO INTENSE and the weird chord progression in the chorus is fantastic! I LOVE MFS!!!!...makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

Meh, hasn't grown on me yet, But jeff kills it on this song0

i had a dream last night i was riding in a car with friends and mfs came on. now in the dream it sounded nothing like the actual song, but it was absolutely horrible sounding in the dream and everyone in the car was disgusted by it.

i appreciate your enthusiasm and i'm glad you love the song; but it has yet to make a real impact for me (consciously and subconsciously). but you talking it up will surely make me revisit the song frequently to keep giving it a shot."...what a different life had i not found this love with you..."0 -
Musically it is amazing,
lyrically it is 100% pure, mature, pearl jam,
and the vocal delivery is ... well ...If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?0 -
This song has such a bare mood to it - excellent. I prefer a longer jam at the end...feels like it's cut short. I love PJ songs that sound like they're over then change and just keep on going. But obviously PJ knows best.Oh please let it rain today.
Those that can be trusted can change their mind.0 -
Said it before, but, imo, best, most interesting bridge in ANY pj song.Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...0

Ed's vocal delivery and Jeff's bass riff build such an intensity together. It has this tone which reminds the anger in the early records. And guitars add this weirdness to on top of all of it, which makes it perfect. What's your part, who you are?

Surprised it only got played twice
I hope to hear it in Vancouver or Seattle...got a mind full of questions and a teacher in my soul...0 -
I want on this crazy train that is "My Fathers Son". If I had to skip this song this cd would be ruined as I look at it like a baseball team manager. You put your lead off man and next guy up first as they are consistent hitters and get on base then 3rd you bring up your big hitter (MFS) and then 4th your clean up man (sirens).
MFS is to LB what DTE is to Yield. My wife never liked DTE until she heard it live and now its her fav. Point is: Sometimes a song can be too raw and powerful to fully appreciate at first.0 -
Im just going to come right out and admit I was wrong to knock the lyrics of this one in an earlier post, I misjudged. I still wish Ed would throw some extra colour on them but the music track is freaking badass indeed. Jeff Ament is all over LB, a King.0

I have always thought Pilate's bridge was the best bridge.0 -

ill say it in this thread as i said it before, since no one seems to comment on it:
the liners credit MIKE MCCREADY with SIX STRING BASS on this track.
???WTF MCCREADY 4 THE WIN???
also:
Huh? Coming out of the bridge and in to the last verse & chorus, that is like some of the most chillingly brain-wrecking vocals eddie has delivered, at least since Comatose or something. ??? TURN THE VOLUME UP ON THIS SONG, guys. or you are missing out & misjudging. ???Mad Mohab wrote:Im just going to come right out and admit I was wrong to knock the lyrics of this one in an earlier post, I misjudged.
