Make it two... my first reaction was that I was just missing Ed's voice. I was unmoved by CC.
Love Ben Harper on Indifference, though.
Ben Harper & EV doing Indifference in NZ 2009 is seriously my 2nd favorite version of that song. If I had heard that first it might've been my absolute favorite. Haunting, in a good way.
Ben covered it at Carnegie Hall last year. I was jumping in my seat. I almost feel like that's HIS song.... and the will to show I will always be better than before.0 -
Cornell's cover of Footsteps was BY FAR the best of the PJ covers on Fallon. So fucking great!!!0

I didn't like it, mainly because I don't like Chris Cornell. I would have much rather heard the Avett Brothers sing it. It would have been cool to hear it with a country twist.0

Awesome version of the song. Hope Cornell records his current tour for Blue Ray dvd and cd release.Seattle 2000, Las Vegas 2003, Portland 2009, Seattle(EV) 2011, Portland 20130

I'm not really a fan of Soundgarden, and certainly not a fan of Audioslave. Musically speaking, not really a big fan of Chris Cornell in general. That said, I don't know how anyone can say they don't 'like' Chris. To me, that's like saying you don't like Peyton Manning. He's such a genuinely nice guy, it's hard not to appreciate him as a person.
Anyway, all that said, this was one of the best Pearl Jam covers I've ever heard. Too often PJ covers fail because they are either performed to sound too much like Pearl Jam, and come off as gimmicky or corny; or they are just stripped of their soul to the point that the performer may as well just play a different song. This cover of footsteps was perfect in every way. Unique and emotive while being true to the song at the same time. Performed beautifully. Absolutely brilliant.0 -
Hate to be the rare voice of dissent, but not a big fan of this. It's great that he did it but his voice has seemed to lose its bite. I wish he did it earlier in his career.
Eddie's voice, in the meantime, has seemed to get stronger, judging by how he belts it out on LB.It's a disease and they're all green, it emanates from their being...0 -

How's the weather over there in Oppositetown?
And is using a live performance in a tv studio really a fair comparison to a studio album, that has multiple takes, copy/pasting and pitch correction?
A much better comparison would be a song from each, in the the same tv studio, a few weeks apart and this version of Footsteps completely slays Sirens from a vocal standpoint, and as I noted before Cornell does it effortlessly.
You don't have to like Cornell to recognize that his voice is still really strong and is much closer to his peak and I think he's probably got a more vocally challenging catalog of songs.
I'm not saying Ed is horrible, he's pretty awesome, but no one can think that that he's a better singer now than in the late 90s/early 2000s. I'd even give Ed the nod as far as having the better career vocally.0 -
I never said I disliked Cornell. Nor did I say Eddie is the better singer (no question Cornell has the better voice, overall). But, relative to each singer's ability, Eddie has seemed to get stronger (even in live performances as well as relative to, say, the Avocado album which was seven years ago). Cornell, in this "Footsteps" performance, just doesn't seem very powerful to me. I was expecting it to be great and just didn't feel that it was. It's a disease and they're all green, it emanates from their being...0
