This article is spot on. I saw the Dead 80+ Times plus 30 or so side projects. I am a newer PJ fan, 4 1/2 years new. This community is very similar. In the book Ticketmasters, they mention PJ going to Grateful Deads office to see how they worked their ticket services. I'm sure there will be a lot people slamming this but if you never have seen a dead show, it's hard to relate.

  • My dad is the definition of a Deadhead. He seen them over 250 times over the course of 20 years so I know my shit. He gets on me in a joking manner for being obsessed with PJ all the time haha. PJ is similar to the Dead in small way. The Dead never went on tour to support an album like PJ normally does. They went on tour as they pleased; and did so much more often obviously than PJ. The fans destroyed cities; bumming around hotels and what not. They got so big that arenas were out of the question to play in. PJ doesn't jam nor do they have such a devote following. I'm not putting them down; it's a fair comparison. PJ puts on unique live performances each night. They have a solid following. They really emphasize their live experience by selling bootlegs like the Dead (Dicks Picks, ect.) And not to mention their longevity.

The last couple of years of Jerry's life the fans were as you described but I blame it in young kids wanting the experience and turkey not knowing what the community was all about. For the most part, DH were respectable citizens. There were of course a few who ruined it for others. There was never a point where they stopped aging arenas. They just played multiple shows. 9 nights at MSG for example. I love to see PJ do a 9 night run at MSG.

What????? The Dead played MSG 52 times with 2 9-show runs in 1988 and 1991. Do your research.

Now if PJ would cover a Dead song as a tip of the cap, I would be greatly pleased. And before you bust out your flamethrowers, go listen to Ripple and then imagine Ed singing it. It would be phenomenal and very fitting.

  • Ha was just having this conversation in line at Brooklyn.

Would love to see Ed cover Brokedown Palace as a show closer.
"Hey, listen asshole, one more fucker throws a fuckin' quarter up here and we're outta here, I'm tellin' ya, FUCKER! What the fuck, you're blowin' it for fuckin' everybody. Hit me with a fuckin' quarter again and, fuck it, I'm outta here. We're all outta here. Fuck you, and if anyone sees someone throw fuckin' change right next to them, you have my permission to beat the fuckin' holy shit outta them."

I've thought of that one too. But the more I thought about Ripple the more I realized that if I had to pick one that would be it. Drop it in the first encore during the slow set. He would crush it.

I really do like the thought of Brokedown Palace because I'd like to see another closer every once in a while. At this point it's either Indifference or Yellow Ledbetter. Sometimes I don't think they have enough confidence in their songs. HEY PEARL JAM, YOU HAVE A LOT OF GOOD SONGS!

You don't need to twist my arm. I'm open to anything they want to cover.
