Phish is another band that has great variety in their setlists, probably a little more than PJ show to show. I happen to like both bands, but the variable setlists is just a part of the great experience at each show. I also saw a bunch of Grateful Dead shows, as well, and they were probably a forerunner of changing setlists.Rochester 94

One of my friends asked about me going to multiple shows in a row - don't they play most of the same songs every night?
Just counted - 68 different songs over the last 3 nights. :ugeek:Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.0 -

Yep, once their repertoire got large enough - for at least their last 15 years - you could see the Dead three nights in a row and be guaranteed not to see a single song repeated. (The occasional exception would be a new tune they were working out, like when they introduced "Touch of Grey" in 1982 - five years before it became a hit - and played it something like 17 shows in a row.)
As someone who saw a fair amount of the Dead - 59 shows - and just last week saw my first back-to-back PJ - Worcester, my fourth and fifth shows - the variability in PJ setlists is definitely one of the (many) things that attracts me to them. The Dead didn't have written setlists though; some very interesting insights into their song selection process are here. In short, audibles were the norm. They also jammed a lot more than PJ does, not that that was always a good thing by any means ... I'd say the overall quality of a PJ show is far more consistent, but musically the Dead were capable of higher peaks in their improvisation, particularly when Garcia was hot, and in segues from one song into whatever they decided on the spot to do next.
edit: All that said, it seems you're more likely to get one or more deep cuts or other surprises at any given PJ show than you would at a typical Dead show. Whatever. It's all good.Mansfield 7/3/2003 | Boston 5/24/2006 | Boston 5/17/2010 | Worcester 10/15-16/20130 -
Good job, interesting stats.
Interesting info on the Dead as well.
