I just took my brother to Pitt for his first PJ show. I know what my list is, but I was wondering what are the top 10 Essential Peal Jam songs you would use to introduce someone to Pearl Jam?

  • I know it's the most popular album but I would start with 10.... Only because more than one person I have introduced to Pearl Jam, listens to that album and realizes that they already know and like a lot of their music... Then I would move on to their great hits album... Once they like those, I would take them into the deeper tracks...

    2006: Camden I & II, Continental II (NJ)
    2008: Camden I & II, DC, MSG I & II (NYC), & EV: NYC II
    2009: Spectrum last 2 nights
    2012: EV: Orlando I & II, Ft. Lauderdale I

    I'll say these 10 are very unique from each other, but represent a good collection of PJ's tenure:

    Release
    Go
    Rearviewmirror
    Tremor Christ
    Crazy Mary
    I Got Shit
    In My Tree
    Present Tense
    Given To Fly
    Nothing As It Seems

    I like this assignment. For me, they would be:

    Black = best ballad
    Alive = most iconic song
    Daughter live with Another Brick in the Wall = emblematic of the live experience
    Elderly Woman live with audience mic = worth it for "Helloooooooo"
    Blood = best of the punk songs imho
    Immortality = such incredible songwriting
    Swallowed Whole = exemplifies current rocking sound and shows nod to influences (REM, Pink Floyd keyboard drop)
    In My Tree = emblematic of the Jack Irons sound and the tribal PJ experiments
    Unthought Known = the new anthemic PJ sound
    Footsteps = the best of the "lost dogs"
    10/31/93 Berkeley (Baba!) • 10/1/94 Bridge School • 9/16/96 Seattle (In My Tree!) • 10/19/96 & 10/20/96 B. School (Alt Corduroy & Alt Porch!) • 10/25/03 B. School • 6/1/03 Mtnview (Crazy Mary! You Are!) • 11/29/13 Portland (All Those Yesterdays! Even Flow!) • 10/25/14 Bridge School (Rain! Fuckin Up! TOTD!) • 5/13/22 Oakland (had to leave early, but W.M.A.! Immortality!) • 5/13/24 Sacramento (Light Years! Picture in a Frame!) • 5/25/24 Bottle Rock (Last Kiss! Maybe It’s Time w/Bradley Cooper!)

    The thread title should have a minor adjustment....Ten:Most Essential Songs For a Newbie

    After I really latched onto that I grabbed Live On 2 Legs and it was just over at that point.
  • I'd just trust my own taste and throw some of my faves out:

    GRIEVANCE
    GETAWAY
    RATS
    PRESENT TENSE
    LIFE WASTED
    LAST EXIT
    DO THE EVOLUTION
    REARVIEWMIRROR
    Too many people think PJ are just some radio friendly rock band, so I'd get BLOOD in there

    And since you pretty much have to include a Ten track...RELEASE

    Hmm, that's hard because my fiance got hooked onto PJ because of their newer stuff (Backspacer, S/T, and now LB).

    But for the average person, it would be this:
    1)Black
    2)Alive
    3) Rearviewmirror (this song got my friend hooked)
    4) Small Town
    5) Corduroy
    6) Given To Fly
    7) Ghost (this is the song that got me hooked, surprisingly i heard Riot Act before i heard Ten)
    8) Yellow Ledbetter
    9)Hail, Hail
    10) Animal

    I feel like these would be great starters and a great lead into their other stuff.
