Good news for anybody ready to slit their own throat next time they hear that "Light 'Em Up" song by Fall Out Boy during the MLB postseason — Fox Sports has inked a deal with Pearl Jam to "soundtrack" the World Series.
Forty-eight of Pearl Jam's songs will be used as commercial bumpers, opening teases and in montages during the series, which runs Oct 23-31 and will be broadcast on Fox.

The deal is unprecedented for both sides, according to Billboard magazine, which got the exclusive in announcing this.

"There was a period of time when we didn't license much music," Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis says. "But for the past many years, we consider licensing requests using the same criteria we do for everything else: Do we like it? Would the fans like it? Does it provide a different forum for fans to hear the music? Is it something we can get behind? The band loves baseball, so this one was a no-brainer."

Fox Sports and MLB have done wide-ranging deals with major rock artists during the past few years, including Jack White during the National League Championship coverage and 30 songs from the Who as the World Series soundtrack, both in 2012. But the Pearl Jam partnership is the largest in terms of number of songs, and perhaps the most personal to boot-not only is frontman Eddie Vedder a lifelong Cubs fan (he brought out legendary Cub Ernie Banks during the Wrigley gig), he's become close friends with Fox Sports announcer Joe Buck as well. The band played St. Louis during the 2010 leg of its Backspacer tour, where Vedder gave Buck an onstage shout-out and hung out with him for a couple of hours after the show.
Included in the deal is every song from Pearl Jam's upcoming album "Lightning Bolt" (due to be released Tuesday). That, folks, is how you market a new album in an modern era. You'll also hear 36 other Pearl Jam songs from across its 10-album catalog.

Sounds good to us. But it could be Paul Anka and we'd consider it a welcomed escape from Fall Out Boy at this point.

That is funny, hate to say, but they have a tough matchup with the Red Sox to get through. Should be a good series.

Tremor Christ while there at it the Brain Of J would be sweet, if they are going to play a wide range of songs and not just Ten over and over I am totally down with it

Kind of hope not but whatever. The most important thing is that sports in general don't come up too often during shows. Any show for that matter. There is nothing like being pulled out of the moment of a concert when a singer mentions a local team or the current score of a game. It's so fucking annoying. Sports and concerts just don't mix and it often brings out the worst in people.

Exactly. Let people who've been sleeping on PJ hear what they've really been missing.

I think it will sell more CDs and downloads than anything, because I may be biased but I think once you get people into albums like Yield and No Code there is no way that you can resist loving this band, I have so many friends and all the Pearl Jam they know is Ten and Vs and that is pretty much it

absolutely since Pearl Jam never sold there souls to the record companies or MTV, they are doing it in a way of instead of whoring out one song, they are going to play a broad range out of their catalog, 48 songs is a lot of different music, that is getting their music out on their terms

    Bump
  • Pearl Jam's songs were sold to a right winged propaganda news organization?

The same organization that LOVED GHW Bush?
The same band that made a song call called Bush-leaguer?

No one sees the irony in this? I find it hard to believe that PJ went into the lions den hoping to "stir the pot"...

    I don't get it...

Looks like I'll be watching the World Series this year!

Is Joe Buck calling the games? If so, even better. Buck and Aikman are my favourite announcers in the NFL.

Never knew Buck and Eddie were friends; now I have another reason to like him. Very cool.

You are correct regarding the overall ownership issues. However, that old curmudgeon doesn't make decisions regarding operations of the sports division.

Personally I agree with you about FauxNews channel and I never ever watch it except when I need a good laugh. But I have no problem watching Fox Sports or reading The Wall Street Journal.

    I agree about the laughs.
I was watching ESPN the other day and heard a PJ song when they went to break. I was shocked.

Anybody else hear that? Next song was DMC's You talk too much. Forgot what show though...

This is cool in and of itself, but it will be 100 times cooler if my team makes the series.

As far as the whole 'selling out'.......stfu with that already, a band doesn't make it 20+ years without adapting. I don't fault any of them for making deals like this. They are avid baseball fans, not just EV (how many anthems has McCready performed in Seattle? They've had Mike McCready bobble head night for Christ's sake!!!) I think it's a no brainer. Good for them, and better for me as I get to enjoy one of my favorite bands at the same time as watching the World Series (hopefully my team is in it!!)

    GO RED SOX!!!!!
