so do you 'get' sirens now?

    oneofusoneofus

    kidding

i'll be the first guy to hate on the hastily-composed faux punky style of much of the studio PJ of the last couple albums - but this song does actually bring something different to the table. what a lot of people are interpreting as commercial cheese I see more as a maturer PJ; now that said, I wouldn't want this type of song to represent everything they do from now on, and from their perspective, i do not believe it will either; but I do think it has its place among the time-tested tracks in the live show catalogue. it has genuine soul. they finally sound like they have recorded a 'new' song that is not rushing through itself.

now obviosuly if you're into Tool and you're in the market right now primarily for the hard stuff this genre may just be a giant reach altogether.

but this is definitely in the top 15 of the 1600 love songs ed has written as of late ;)

assuming they don't rush through this live (Matt seems to have a tendency to apply the same single overly upbeat tempo to every PJ song performed live these days) this could bring the house down. the live video perfomance ending is pretty bold. all 5 members stand with this song.

I am not a believer in loving everything a band produces, just because they are that band. but I actually like this version of PJ, it fits their maturity level - there is nothing forced here, no posturing, trying to be something they are not - and to the contrary they tell you very much something deep about who they currently are. this is a team-effort track. its not driven by any one person in particular, everyone's giving a modest amount throughout this song and it complements each other's contributions well.

i have shitted all over BOB on this board but it looks like he had a fairly significant hand in arranging this / turning this from a few powerful yet disparate ideas into a well integrated, understated interplay between all members.

I just hope the same level of intense focus that is very apparent in the music video is applied to this consistently on tour. It would be a shame to see this fast-tracked into yet another rushed, detail-less live version of a once measured, contemplative PJ song (see: sometimes, off he goes). but that hasn't happened yet so can't get stuck in a hater hole (yet) on that!!

on a different note - where does this song go in a live setlist??? like the slow-down after the first 3-4-5 fast ones? ending the first setlist? I mean, how do you follow this ending? slamming into Habit?

Wow. Thanks for writing this. I was going to slim down the quote but I couldn't. I agree with it all completely.

Yes, while I am eagerly anticipating some new Tool and fuckin' Mastodon records, PJ is what I care most about. I talked some shit on Sirens but it was mostly because I just have different expectations from this band. I've gotten into it now though.. It will never be one of my favorite songs but it's certainly not a bad song by any measure. For me, it's the damn melodrama of the production that hurts it most so obviously live I think it will really hit it's stride (as is somewhat evident from the video). I agree about not rushing it live. They even blew through MYM at Wrigley and it was pretty uncomfortable to watch let alone for Ed to sing.

As for Sirens placement, I see it as the second song in the second set.

Oh, and I had a dream that I heard the rest of Getaway and I think it's awesome :)

Nice - i think the MYM video from London (there is/was one from like the second row on youtube) shows how much effort it takes to play it live - i haven't seen the Wrigley version but I could see the potential for this coming off the rails if its up next on the set list and they are not ready to blast on all cylinders... Ed might need to do some breathing exercises ahead of time, it does look physically taxing. If there is persistent discomfort I could see MYM possibly becoming less and less frequently played as the tour goes on... maybe it will become a proxy for the occasional STBC ... but we'll see what happens.

That's crazy - I have had a dream about the rest of Getaway too - it's a recurring dream. Every time I have that dream, the song sounds better and better. Then it's stuck in my head when I am awake and I just want to like head bob to it all Cali style or something.

Second song in the second set does sound about right for Sirens. I could picture it elsewhere I guess, really depends on the flow. Maybe after a ton of energetic songs, and then like a slower song, then sirens, then like something up tempo (RVM / MFC ?). Don't see this as an opener - I cold see them starting with this cold and it just not having the passion there that it needs to....but who knows, i think of H2I somewhat similarly... and they did H2I like 10 openers in a row one tour, so if they want to, they damn well will do it.

Oh okay. I was wondering what happened when I saw you post today. I am happy you're back! You were missed! Most of us have a temper tantrum or a knee jerk reaction once in a while - totally natural when the unexpected hits us in the face! ;)

Couldn't take it. I miss all you guys (I consider you all friends, believe it or not) and I miss bullshitting about the best band on earth.

Sorry for last week's temper tantrum. I basically picked a fight with my "girlfriend", realized I was being a jerk, and now I'm crawling back...

    Hope that's cool.
Don't worry! Everyone does it!! Glad you're back!! Believe it or not.. We missed you too!

the more i think on it ... sirens is an opener ... not only becuase of the build ... but ed can't be winded singing this song ... also ... what better way to kick off a PJ concert than a song about how we need to cherish the time we have ...

I agree, nice opener. And I've always liked you Polaris :)

However, this October22 guy I missed completely. Kinda scares me. Is that his birthday or will he be in Philly that day?

Tells herself " it's all good". It's all good.
