I love LBC, but the band doesn't need him in studio or live. He's the reason I hate to hear crazy Mary live anymore.

The Black Keys don't play their latest material live without a bass and keyboard player. Are they officially members of the Keys now? No.

Bobby Keys has contributed far more to The Rolling Stones than Boom has to Pearl Jam.
Bobby Keys is not a member of The Rolling Stones.

Boom, bless him seems like a great guy and probably a very fun and calming figure to have around on tour but I'm not really much of a fan of his presence. If it was just to play keys on songs that were recorded with them originally it would be ok but too often it just doesn't work. Release as mentioned is a great example. Listen to the version on London 09 for evidence why this shouldn't ever happen. It sounds like the road crew are still a dragging a piano into the building. Truly awful! I've heard enough to be sure he has plenty talent behind the keys but I don't think it fits in with 90% of the songs they use him on.

ok. what percentage of songs does he contribute to, live? in my opinion, not enough to be considered a full member. it would be different if he was on stage for 80% of the show, but he's not.

    He isn't? :?
Maybe I've just never noticed :lol:
I thought he was always there parked behind Stoney the whole time?
    NERDS!
  • I think Brenda O'Brien is more of a member than Boom is. I'm not a huge fan of his contributions live, but on the other hand, I don't get all the comments saying he isn't talented enough to be on record. I think Brendan is just too possessive about his own place in this band he thinks he's apart of so Boom gets the shaft in the studio.

But he's probably content with surfing and spliffs anyways.

    Well said.

I like the B3 sound on LBC and some of the other Riot Act tunes. The dueling solos on Crazy Mary can be cool, but yeah...the rest of the music doesn't need him.

  • It reminds me of Tim Reynolds from Dave Matthews Band... and also Butch Taylor on keys... Tim has done the majority of their records, but he is technically "not a band member".... idk,.... I agree as much as I disagree... BOOM is awesome on LBC, of course it isn't the same without him... but I don't think they overuse it like DMB did with Butch Taylor in '05.. that was awful.
