I think Axl being a prick has some people automatically cringing at this thread but the man could write some incredible lyrics at times. I dont think he still has the pipes or if he ever truly did but he's a legit lyricist.

And Ed would pull off a great version of Civil War.

You haven't seem him recently. Is he the same as when he was 22? Is Ed? Are you?

And regarding Slash - DJ Ahsba is easily his equal. Slash is good not great. Nobody is mistaking him for Page.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

I will say that the new GNR might be better musicians than the first lineup. They even have indie cred with one of the Replacements being in the band

no just no stop drinking and posting ...if pj ever covered gnr they would be desperate ..hey I like gnr I do I grew up with them but pj is above that and axel rose is such a disgrace that its an insult. like I said I grew up listening to gnr as well as pearl jam this is just not ok pj Is like back in the day zeppelin and gnr hasn't been anything since what 93. slash is an amazing guitarist and deserves a lot of credit. axel wrote some good songs and was an amazing front man for 5 years. but this is 2013 and pj and gnr are not even in the same category.

    PJ forever ...period
    In Pearl Jam we TRUST!

Disappointed to see this is about GNR, thought it was a call for the James Brown tune!
  • Lol... Mike could more than handle Slash's part. Listen, Slash is a good guitarist, but some of you act like he is Yngwie Malmsteen ( technically great but has no feel in his playing - hate him ). And, who said Slash was a classically trained guitarist. It's been a few years since I read his Bio book, but I don't recall ever hearing this. I spend far more of my time hanging around hard rock and metal forums and I can tell you Slash is never included among the greats. For that matter, neither is Mike. But, I feel Mike is truly underrated... in part due to his personality and in part due to the band he plays in. Slash is more closely associated with a genre that loves to rate guitarist.

BTW, all the PJ concerts I have been to generally included some covers, REM and Pink Floyd come to mind, neither of which are terribly similar to PJ. So, hell yeah, I think some GnR would be cool. Nobody is suggesting that's PJ's version would replace the Guns on the radio.

Oh, and lastly. Axl did write one of the best antiwar songs ever. Sorry if you don't like the man..the band, but Civil Kills ( not literally since it's kinda against that sort of thing ).

Not one person has said Slash is the absolute most technically gifted guitarist ever, but if you're denying that he far surpasses Mike in sheer technical ability, you're simply wrong. His sound is immediately identifiable and it's probably one of the top 5 most chased tones ever.

Slash did attend music school. I have a feeling he tries to downplay how much it affected his playing, but who really knows. Classically trained may be a bit of a stretch.

Slash is no doubt included amongst the greats. He's one of the most iconic guitar players ever, for both his look and his sound. I've spent alot of time around guitar forums and his name pops up pretty frequently.

There's not really a big difference in the genre that they play in. GnR and PJ are both classic rock inspired rock\hard rock. I don't think that has any bearing whatsoever in how Mike is viewed. Jerry Cantrell has no trouble getting the cover of guitar magazines, or getting props from a lot of players.

Again, I've never seen or heard Mike approach the speed and dexterity that Slash pulls on some of the old GnR stuff. Nothing even close enough to make me think Mike is even close.

Apart from the fact that I think PJ covering Gn'R would be an awful idea, why on earth would they pick Nightrain? Unless it was done as a joke, can you really imagine Ed singing this:

Well I'm a west coast struttin', one bad mother
Got a rattlesnake suitcase under my arm
Said I'm a mean machine, been drinkin' gasoline
An honey you can make my motor hum.
Well, I got one chance left in a nine live cat
I got a dog eat dog sly smile
I got a Molotov cocktail with a match to go
I smoke my cigarette with style
An I can tell you honey you can make my money tonight.
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)
