It would be interesting to hear them cover nighttrain or civil war. I was thinking about this when I heard civil war on the radio and thought a political statement like this is similar to PJ. I think the boys would rock civil war.

    Wind this thing up.

^^^i agree. Civil War is my favorite modern antiwar song.

One funny note is that Slash once complained that Axl was always trying to get the rest of them to listen to PJ and Slash has always thought they suck
  • Ed could not pull Axl off. Don't do this. Axl is a truly unique singer and you'd be very disappointed to realize they are not the same league. Love Ed. But this would be a huge disappointment. Theres a reason folks don't typically cover GnR and it's not the guitar.

They'd be better off doing Crazy Train.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

I think it's the guitar too. Mike could bs something but he couldn't play it like Slash. Slash is on a whole different level when it comes to speed and he has a pretty identifiable sound as well.

I think there are much simpler songs that Ed has trouble with and he's at the opposite end of the spectrum from Axl.

Stone is probably the only one that could mimic his counter part with much success. I've always thought him and Izzy have pretty similar roles and a lot of similar influences.

Jeff would do good just b/c he's fuckin Jeff and that's how he rolls.

Good point. Why would we want them to even try? This would be like The Who playing Zeppelin. There's really no reason.

OK, so I am going to randomly rant only because I have listened to both PJ and GnR extensively.

I know that you wouldn't get the same high pitched screaming from Ed in Nighttrain, but he would give civil war a much needed lift. Literally I think if Ed sang this people would think wow this song means something, we should think about it. That's why I said nighttrain would be interesting, but civil war would be cool. I disagree with the crazy train attempt, personally. You are 100% right, Ed could not pull of Axl, but civil war by PJ would be awesome.

    Wind this thing up.

Mike could nail SOME Slash material. But there are some Slash riffs/solos that are beyond Mike. Sorry, but it's true. Slash is not overrated at all.

There are so many things I want to say, so I will make it short: yes Stone, Jeff, and Matt (not mentioned) could hang.

Ed doesn't scream like Axl so you are partially right. But I would Loooooooooove to hear what he could do on a lot of their songs. The songs that don't involve screaming, I believe would be better by PJ.

Lastly if you ever think that Mike couldn't play anything by Slash,(vomit) I'd (vomit) like to vomit. Basically Mike is superior to Slash, and Slash is a top 10 lead guitarist. But I would punch anyone in the face that ever said that Mike is not on the same level as Slash to my face. I would take that personal.

    Cheers

Big fan of both GNR and PJ... Totally agree with you, oysterjar. I don't think Axl can sing like Axl anymore!

Civil War would be fantastic and very appropriate right now.

First off calm down. It's a music debate.

You don't have to like GnR or even like Slash's playing. And I am as big of a Mike fan as anyone in this board. But Mike is a blues/hard rock based guitarist. And what he does he does with as much feel and passion as any guitarist.

But Slash is a classically trained guitarist and is simply "better". Now, I happen to love GnR, but regardless it is what it is. Disregarding the obvious choices I could link to, this one will do just fine:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYirx68mzAo

Go to 2:45. You don't have to like it, but to say Mike could nail that, let alone effortlessly...c'mon now...

Please don't take this personal. GnR used to be my favorite band. I loved them. They have awesome songs. Slash/izzy combo was awesome. But I have my opinion and you have yours. To parry your link (which by the way shows slash is fucking awesome) I give you this

Its a quick little link. I you tubed "Mike Mcready solo" and this was on the first page, and it was from last year.

    EDIT: Easily

Slash is overrated, but he also plays with a level of precision that Mike has never begun to approach.

Not in the same universe as guitar players. I wouldn't even put Slash in the Top 10 and Mike isn't in anybody's top 100 outside of this board. To say that he's better than Slash for anything other than personal preference undermines any credibility you may have. One listen to Paradise City will tell you all you need to know.

Yeah, that's my reaction too. I think it's because I think songs are only worthy of covering if 1) the band is no longer active, 2) the songs are legendary, or 3) you are Prince and want to cover Evenflow

GnR songs are still alive and kicking through, well, GnR and Slash's band (and I think Myles Kennedy and Todd Kerns do the songs justice on vocals) so it doesn't really occur to me for anyone else to "cover" those songs. Also, I don't view GnR and Pearl Jam in the same family of music so it would just be bizarre to me for them to cover. Would be different if let's say Slash shows up at a show, but still a bit bizarre. I think if Slashed showed up they would just cover something else, like Hendrix.

Oh, and Slash is so not overrated.

I think Axl being a prick has some people automatically cringing at this thread but the man could write some incredible lyrics at times. I dont think he still has the pipes or if he ever truly did but he's a legit lyricist.

And Ed would pull off a great version of Civil War.
