2003 Tour of Japan
compilation & artwork by ridleybradout
August 2013

The 2003 tour of Japan was a unique one for Pearl Jam. After concluding an arena tour of Australia, the band found themselves playing to subdued audiences in smaller venues filled with Japanese businessmen in suits and ties. This atmosphere encouraged the band to take a different approach - playing unusual and varied setlists that were at times made up as they went. The rehearsal-like vibe was highly conducive to the band's quieter and more intricate tracks, leading to some special performances that showcased nuances often lost in more traditional concert environments. Having said that, when they decided to rock they did so HARD, with deliciously satisfying guitar-tones and some of Ed's most aggressive vocal performances of the decade. This compilation presents some of the best moments from that tour, the first disc focusing on the more chilled-out performances and the second on the rock. The icing on the cake is that the Japan bootlegs are sound-wise among the best Pearl Jam has ever recorded.
Hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed making it

You're right about the strange times - concerts in Japan start much earlier than in the West (I think Ed mentions 5pm during one of the gigs?), so the businessmen in ties were due to people coming straight from work (Ed talks about this during the encore of the Sendai show)
These shows make for a really unique listen due to how quiet and respectful the crowds are, and the effect this has on the band - highly recommended to anyone who hasn't checked them out before

Interesting factoid: This is taken directly from an old Rumor Pit, circa 2003.
I See Cameras...
Pearl Jam have always videotaped every show and sometimes this footage makes it to the processing plant and a DVD is born. A DVD by the name of March 1st Yokohama, Japan is still incubating but there's no word yet on its due date or the possiblity of extra features. The previously released Showbox DVD will be available on tenclub.net only until we run out
This was eventually scrapped in favor of the MSG concert. Another one for the vaults!0 -

From the Concert Chronology reviews:During many of the shows, one of the techs would hold up a sign with a “$” on it toward the band. Some speculate that this meant that song was a “good take” for the video that was obviously being made (there are numerous cameras). Perhaps another DVD … a few live clips are appearing on the video section of the Ten Club site already.2003-02-19 Melbourne

One of the best weeks of my life.
Yes the places were tiny. Sendai could've held a couple thousand, but was under 1,000 (sat last row to sit with friends, it was row 19 center empty behind us). Yokohama was a big theater, Tokyo was an arena, Osaka a theater, and Nagoya kinda had a town hall vibe to it.
Shows were early, it was awesome. Something amazing about getting to see an epic show in the early evening, then being able to go out and enjoy a night on the town. Think doors were normally around 6, band was on by 7, and we were out eating and drinking by 10.
Because shows are so early, most people came straight from work. Lots of young professionals. Think the band even got some ties at a show.
Few personal highlights:
-The beginning of Sendai. After about 15 minutes we knew we had made the right decision to fly over for these shows. Band was super relaxed, the crowd was great, and the setlist was perfect.
-"Making it up" Hearing those words at the Osaka show, and watching what went down for the next 90 minutes was something I never thought the band would do. Setlist for the show ended at Off He Goes, after that was a giant ?, the band called audibles for the rest of the night. Also got to see the band play Oceans for the first time.
- Improv -> Immortality in Nagoya. Wish I could've had a safety meeting before that set.
Set here looks pretty good. Personally I will never listen, but looking over tracks and cities just brought back a rush of amazing memories of a special time and place in my life.0 -

I am listening to the first CD now. Good stuff.
I really like the slower pace for songs like Nothing as it seems and Immortality. Sometimes I feel they play some songs too fast nowadays.0 -
