    Speedy,

Assuming you don't have a bum wheel, there are plenty of watering holes and eating establishments within walking distance of Barclays. Save your money, fella.

I'm sure there are plenty of folks who would be willing to show you around.
There are 3 of us traveling together, and there may be one or 2 more. I MUST go see The Statue Of Liberty, Ground Zero, and The Empire State Building (minimum). I don't want to put anyone out, or cram ourselves into cars and taxis and subways. For $100 or so a person, we can be driven around in comfort.

    I don't know.
    Its just an idea.
That will probably change 1,263 times before Oct. 19th.:lol::lol::lol::lol:

OK, depending on how you want to see those places, it might be really tough to do all three, even with a $600 chauffeur service. If you want to ride the elevator to the observation deck of the Empire State Building, you have to get up at the buttcrack of dawn and stand in line for an hour or so to get there before all the other knuckleheads get there, making your wait even longer. If you just want to see it, that's free and easy to do from any semi-open spot in NYC. If you want to get really close to it, that's easy enough, too. And if you do that, be sure to melt some ice cubes at Foley's across the street, an old-timey bar for sportswriters that's like a museum.

A lot of that goes for the Statue of Liberty, too. If you want to actually take the Ferry to Liberty Island and get all up in that bitch, it's the old buttcrack of dawn routine again. If you just want to see it, well, that can be done from many vantage points. If you want to get close, the Staten Island Ferry goes right by her, and it's free.

Ground Zero. If you want to go to the ticketed memorial, buttcrack again. If you just want to see it, that's easy enough.

I see all three every day. I work in the Financial District and commute by riding my bike over the Brooklyn Bridge and back. On the way to work, Empire is to my right and the Lady Liberty is to my left. On the way back, reverse it. I walk by Ground Zero during my lunch break most days. So, taking a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to Ground Zero is a way to do everything -- plus, you're taking a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge!
Yeah, I walked by the Empire State Building, saw the line, saw the price of riding an elevator, and kept walking. I don't regret it. There is so much to see and enjoy in NYC, there was no way I was wasting my time getting to the top of a building. You could probably walk into any tall office building and take the elevators up to a high floor and get just as a good a view for free.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata

I'm looking forward to seafood in Seattle, hopefully someone will have good suggestions

    McCormick & Schmick's-$$$
    Anthony's Pier 66-$$$
    The Crab Pot-$$
    Ivar's Acres of Clams-$
Ivar's Salmon House-$$ (same chain as Acres of Clams, but finer dining)
    Salty's on Alki-$$$

some of these places like for you to make reservations (like McCormick, Ivar's Salmon House, and Salty's) but they will do their best to seat walk-ins.

I will toss it out there for anybody that loves a good cured meat sammy...Salumi is Mario Batali's family owned eatery, they also sell meats by the pound. They are open 11-3:30 Tuesday thru Friday. Line up early if you want to try it.

    are these all seattle????

    yes!

http://www.mccormickandschmicks.com/ (I see they went National, they used to be a 'local chain'-haven't been there for a while, so hopefully the menu is still good)

this is the place where they put butcher paper on the table and dump out the food on the paper for you to stuff your face

    http://www.ivars.com/ <
again, go to the Salmon House if you want a nice sit-down, otherwise there is a walk-up cafe on the waterfront, and watch your food! They have seating on the pier, and the seagulls are ravenous little thieves.

http://saltys.com/ <----they have an AMAZING brunch for those staying thru Sunday.

    awesome sammies and cured meats

Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village is basically lined with little bars and restaurants, and all were cool, especially the bars. :P

Bleeker is a great place to hang out all day and its almost like your not in manhattan. Little italy and china town are close by as well.

For what it's worth, we have a McCormick and Schmick's in Minneapolis, and according to their website, have over 90 locations in North America.

    Seattle:
    Paseo - Cuban style sandwiches
Quinn's - Lots of beer and the best burger in town
    Italian Family Pizza
    Radiator Whiskey

    Portland:
Apizza Scholls - Better than any NYC or Chicago pizza I've ever had. Get there early because when they run out of dough, they're done.

Any one know any good vegetarian places in LA? "Normal" places with veggie options are cool too. I find that if I ask for vegetarian options I usually get some list of anarchist pubs that only serve grass fed grass and beer made from pine nuts. Haha. Just some good local spots that have a few choices would be most appreciated for LA!

    Thanks! Great thread idea!

Some of my favorite LA spots, some of them meat heavy but most have great veggie options.

    Downtown area

Mendocino Farms: (super yummy sandwiches, salads, soups sides, organic, lots of vegetarian options as well as beer and wine) several locations downtown, valley and westside http://mendocinofarms.com/uploads/2012/05/Mendo_Summer_WebMenu1.pdf

Umamicatessen: the best burgers and porky stuff! Get the Manly burger or the Truffle burger. http://www.umami.com/umamicatessen/

Baco Mercat: (lots of veggie options!) simply the best mediterranean food...http://bacomercat.com/about.html

    Sugarfish: Delicious sushi! http://sugarfishsushi.com/

    Westside

Huckleberry: the most delicious pastries and baked goods! , best breakfast on the westside, (typical Santa Monica Farmer's Market food, lots of organic veggie options) http://www.huckleberrycafe.com/

Bay Cities Deli: Italian deli and sandwiches http://www.baycitiesitaliandeli.com/

Tsujita: the best Japanese noodles in town! Very porky. http://tsujita-la.com/

Gjelina: typical California food, lots of veggies options, organic stuff, charcuterie, pizzas, and a braised rabbit that's to die for! http://www.gjelina.com/

Umami, Stout, and Rustic Canyon have the best burgers and beer:

I"ve heard that there is amazing pizza in Brooklyn. I've taken friends from out of town to Lombardi's on Spring Street (Manhattan) a number of times and they all loved it. It's the oldest still operational pizzeria in the city.

It is worth it. I'd suggest you have them make you a 50/50 one half corned beef, one half pastrami. Act like you cant decide and the slicer will throw you samples of both. Dont get lean or extra lean! you will ruin it.

Also the hot dogs are UNREAL.

SPEEDY. You're considering $600 for a 12 hour chauffeured vehicle reasonable but $20 for lunch crazy? Also, they put about a pound of meat on that sandwich. And don't be a pussy, skip the diet coke get a Dr. Brown's soda. Some die hard Jewish Deli snobs will tell you to get the celery flavor, personally I like the black cherry. But I'm not a Jewish Deli snob. Unfortunately I can't recommend alternatives to katz's I would suggest you go there, because it is really, really good. I have my go-to pastrami spot but it's in Queens and nowhere near anything you need to see when you are only in the city for 36 hours.
Pizza is easy, dankind listed a whole bunch of places but I will say that you can stop at literally any pizzeria where you see people inside and you will have a good chance of getting a good slice, maybe not epic or legendary, but good.

For what you said you wanted to see, as others have mentioned it depends how you want to do it. I recommend this: http://www.nywaterway.com/90-MinuteTwilightCruise.aspx I know I mentioned this thing somewhere else on here, but what you get with these boat tours is a narrated tour of half of Manhattan, plus a swing around the Statue of liberty so you can take photos. The top of this boat in particular is open, so you get great views. The problem I can see here though is the weather can be funny in October. It used to be cold in October but the last couple years it wasn't. There are several type of these cruises, so I highly recommend looking into them and doing one of those. You will get great views and photo ops of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, the rest of the downtown skyline (including the freedom tower) as well as the bridges.

If you want to actually go to the top of the Empire State building then thats a different story lol

In Seattle, 215 James St (between 2nd Ave & 3rd Ave); Pioneer Square area:

Chuck's Hole In the Wall BBQ.

And it really is a hole in the wall. It's really just a take-out counter, but there are a few seats in there. It's fucking amazing. They are only open weekdays, 11am - 3pm or earlier if they run out of food. They are only open for this short amount of time because they don't think that BBQ that is more than 4 hours old is worth serving. They take their BBQ seriously. Brisket (*drool*), pulled pork, and turkey if I remember correctly. Best BBQ I've ever had. So get there early to make sure you get some, and don't forget the beans - they are also amazing. :)

  • $600 to have 6 people chauffeured around New York for 12 hours, is a BARGAIN!
$15.95 for a corned beef sandwich is a ripoff!

    :lol::lol::lol::lol:

But I will get the damned corned beef sandwich.
I will get the $6 bowl of soup.
And I will enjoy my lunch in NYC.
    Take me piece by piece.....
