All of this discussion about Arcade Fire has gotten away from the original post. With that said, and I swear I am not trolling right now, and I really dislike this band, but I think that you could legitimately make an argument that the biggest band on the planet right now in terms of what is popular, what is hot, selling tickets, acclaim, headlining festivals all that stuff is..... Mumford and Sons.
I dont like their music at all, but they have a huge following, and really big influence right now. I am not saying that they are anywhere close to having as rabid a fan base, as much importance, or just being as good as almost any band mentioned in this thread, but right now they are a pretty big band.
Let the hatred commence.0 -

pearljamsam wrote:Solid points, would you say that the Strokes were the biggest band when Is This It first hit? I would, it may have been only for a few months, but they were pretty important at that time, and never really did a huge arena tour, I would consider Arcade Fire similar to The Strokes in that way, I would say that they were the biggest thing in rock, and music for that matter when they closed the Grammys and won album of the year. I know that Grammys or trash, but in this argument I think thats a pretty big factor.
I actually meant to mention The Strokes in my post. I love that first album and like AF, I thought they need that next album punch that really elevates a band.
PJ had Vs
Zeppelin had II
Floyd had Wish You Were Here to follow their first mega successful album
ACDC had Back In Black after Highway to Hell
GnR had the Lies ep
Some of it comes down to timing too. Kings of Leon had Sex On Fire and it seemed like forever til Use Somebody and Notion came out....almost like they were from different albums. I don't think they were ever in the convo for being the biggest, but it sure seemed like they were riding a pretty big wave. If the lead single from Come Around Sundown could've matched any of the big singles from Only By the Night, they'd be pretty huge right now and alot more people would be clamoring for their next album.
Appetite For Destruction had a similar thing, if I remember right. Sweet Child started getting play like 2 years after Appetite For Destruction came out and that's when it absolutely exploded, then bam!!! Patience and pow!! the whole One In A Million controversy and holy shit when the Use Your Illusion albums came out, with all those epic videos...those guys were fucking kings of the world.Post edited by DewieCox on0 -
Pearl Jam are a small in-house underground indie band co-operative, known only by a select few - and that's just the way we like it

They have a few catchy tunes, but not long ago there was this documentary about them touring with a few other bands, going across country on a train....there were some really poignant moments and a few catchy numbers, then it got to the end and it turned into the most poserish, phoney baloney dance-off thing.0 -
I just went to metacritc to add some fuel to my Arcade Fire, and they listed the 66 most anticipated albums of 2013. Arcade Fire was the first listed, and I thought I really had something to add. Then four previews in I realized it was in alphabetical order. Anyhow they said that the average critical score of AF first three albums is 88, so I'm standing by all statements made thus far. Even Mumford and Sons and they blow.0

Sorry to disappoint, but the biggest acts in 'music' today are the ones the little girls are buying.
One Direction and Justin Bieber are two that come to mind. Sure, Pearl Jam and other bands will sell out stadiums, but so will the pops-stars. The only difference is that the pop-stars albums go multiplatinum.0 -

Unfortunately your right about this, thats why I cant really say who the biggest band on the planet would be right now. Isn't it nuts that when most of the people on this site were young kids the bands that the little girls bought were Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. Its been years since that was the case. Its really too bad.0 -

the true test is: What will Justin Bieber & such be doing 25 years from now, when he's/they are 40+ yrs old?

I can't see why anyone likes this kid...he doesn't have a good VOICE!
in this day and age of all these singing competition tv shows that focus on how well you sing, bieber wouldn't even get through the preliminary round...
maybe its just me but I sure as hell don't get it...0 -
all those other "pro tools" bands are all lacking in something that can't be fixed in the studio....Matt.Cameron.

One Direction now they've added a sixth member
Happy up here in my tree0 -
I think Mumford and Sons are very important right now despite how lame they are because they're a pop group that are introducing musical instrumentation to a section of a generation who've grown up with synthetic sounding music.Nature drunk and High0

I don't recall too many young girls buying up Nirvana, pJ or SP the way they were Rabid about NKOTB & a lot of the pop crap that was out there. Feels like a little bit of revisionist history there.
The op is also very flawed. On what are you basing your argument? Popularity? How is that measured, through gross revenue?
Arcade Fire is a good band, but just because they were or have been one of the hot young bands over the last few years doesn't even put them close to the top.
#1) I don't think their tour will sell out half as quickly as PJ's just did (have you been paying attention to the board in recent weeks?)
#2) I don't think Arcade Fire is headlining any show's at 40,000 seat arenas without an opening act.
Foo Fighters played Wembley a few years ago. Now THAT is one of the biggest bands in the world, if they can pack Wembley.
The argument is certainly opinionated, and nobody's necessarily wrong, but to go by your logic including bands like KOL or the Strokes because there's been a ton of buzz about them, I would think you can't stop there, you have to include bands like the White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys and the Black Keys. ( those are only recent bands to have a ton of buzz, that doesn't even include 90s bands that have come & gone). Not one of those bands would even enter my definition of biggest band in the world, including arcade Fire (& I'm an AF fan)
In my opinion, a band has to have been around or a solid 15-20 years to even enter the discussion of biggest band in te world.
Until then, it's a potential flash in the pan.0 -
As far as Pearl Jam goes, I see them in that sort of Grateful Dead category in terms of popularity (I am NOT comparing them stylistically!). I.e., like the Dead, everyone knows who Pearl Jam is, and many casual fans would go see them, but there is a core fan base that are diehards. Popular bands, but not the biggest on the planet.0
