I remember my 10th grade English teacher that you never needed to say "I think" in an essay, since it is your writing. Same applies here. we are all just expressing our opinions/thoughts/feelings.

If you dont like a song, just skip it and find one you do like. Life is too short.

True... But you also learn in essay writing that you should motivate and vilidate your argument and not present them as universal truths; that is the point of an essay - to argue.

That sounds like a fair deal :lol::lol: .

And for all purposes of clarification: I didn't like RA. Still not my favourite. I thought ST was a bit contrived. Where RA was so laid back and obscure, there was this enormous (over)compensation (in my opinion at least) in ST. Where Ed was mumbling in RA, he was screaming in ST. To me Backspacer was back to the former shape of PJ. I felt, and still feel, it is a more natural follow up of Binuaral. That is just my opinion though. So I don't see the trend you are reffering to. To me they broke this trend with BS. I do agree however that RA, no matter how you look at it (you either like the album or not) was at some level - which I cannot put my finger on - a turning point; both musically and lyrically. Is like they (on purposely) stepped away from something. Maybe it was the "what" question Ed Vedder is referring to in PJ20. Maybe it was time for them to approach the music making differently. Either way, I think that the experiences in 2000 didn't leave the band unscathed.

The more "positive" approach of BS (even though the lyrics of some songs are quite bleak) was to me a break from the depression in RA and the over politicized ST. Here there was a more philosophical undertone (going back to the core, the basics, the importance of life - hence the title) than in the two previous records. In the same way Binaural had a philosophical undertone; so did No Code, Vitalogy and VS. I truly missed that in RA and it felt disjointed in ST.

No album can top Vitalogy in my book. But I think the crap that Binaural (that is when it really started), RA, ST and BS got oven the years is sometimes a bit too much. They are good records in their own right, just with a different atmosphere. I like that. I don't want an endless repeat.

Regarding CC: it is a good song. I like it too. But I can't compare an almost finished demo to a live song. I want to hear the studio versions.

That said: Pearl Jam, it is really time to release that Lost Dogs 2 album!!!! ;)

Ps to Dimitri: Dutch and Norwegian do have linguistic similarities. I used to be able say "cheers" in Norwegian. Forgot unfortunately :lol::lol: .

Yes, there have been skeptics about pretty much every album since vs, and I have been there for all of them with mixed feelings every time. VS didn’t sound like ten, Vitalogy sounded too dark, What the hell is this? (No code). But the difference then has always been that there has always been something there to stir my interest. I didn’t find the joy with the music because I couldn’t fully grasp it. Even though I was a pessimist, the mystique of the music was overwhelming and had to be concurred. Eventually I found what I was looking for. The PJ feeling, the music that took me places. Pearl Jam was the only band that could spin me around, roll me over… It has been a fucking circus. At least of the bands I have had the chance to follow. Pink Floyd has also managed this, but I am too young to have been there for the ride. Pearl Jam and Eddie seemed to have some sort of power over me, and they obviously knew me better than I knew myself sometimes, so it seemed. This relationship is fading now, and I think it is awfully sad to acknowledge it.

So Pearl Jam has taken their songwriting in new directions with every single album. Nothing wrong with that off course, but with Backspacer and the first tastes of LB, the soul and magic is gone for me. I want to like this stuff, but I am unable to.

It becomes more and more evident that PJ and I have travelled different routes. I will always treasure the irreplaceable jewelry they gave me in the 90’s. That music will always be extremely valuable to me. There has been some great stuff in the 2000’s as well, but further between them. As for now, I am hoping that the new album will have something for me too, but as I have said here and in other posts, I worry the new album will have little to offer me personally.

If so happens, I will accept it and move on. Pearl Jam owes me absolutely nothing and I hope they stay together to play and make new music for a long time. I will be there listening.

I deleted my earlier post because yours says it better. Thanks.

Lightning Bolt(the song) kind of has an AC/DC feel to it..which is fine cause I know a lot of people like that sound that has been perfected by them. But Pearl Jam HAD a unique sound in the 90's..deep, meaningful lyrics, with great phrasing by Eddie's deep baritone voice. Mike McCready's long solos took you on a magical ride. Maybe we were all fighting and struggling to get somewhere and find some meaning back in the day. The fact that the band now have families and wealth/stability, and are at peace when a lot of us are not in that space means there may not be that connection to the new music. The fact that they reached their happiness before many of the fans means some will not like hearing it. Guy working a dead end job or someone who wants to quit but can't will not like Future Days as much as Not For You. Married guy with wife and kids can appreciate Just Breathe and how lucky he is.

Maybe the songs just don't have universal appeal, and it doesn't FEEL like the band is speaking to you like Ten did or Vs. Or Vitalogy. Pearl Jam music used to have a spiritual quality..now it seems they just wanna rock..which I guess maybe would be expected when your turning 50 and wanting to hold on to your youth. Either way, it will be nice to add a few new songs to the shuffle list ..if not the entire album come October.

i hate both of these songs

i understand ed is starting to have this old man tendency to write crap like this, but this is why you make solo records.

EVERY FUCKING SONG on Moonlander is not only better, but shits all over, both of these garbage songs.

i shouldn't have to fast forward on a pearl jam record. i never did on the first 8.

    dear ed,
    i love you
but if you wanna write filler
    make it like aye davanita

Or maybe you should accept that this band has changed and move on. Try to put some IMO in your sentences. "This shits all over IMO", these are "garbage songs IMO" etc. You make it sound that these are universal truths and they are not. It is your conception, your intepretation, your subjective state of mind. No need to express it 20 000x. You would not be the first fan that stops being a fan or doesn't like the "new" direction of your band nor the last. You win some, you loose some. I like new directions, I think Aye Davanita is a true song "without words" instead of a filler, and stop, please stop, (and this is not specifically aimed at you) putting *your* demands, hopes, and your likes and dislikes onto an artist. Let them grow and renew themselves *in their own way*. I personally didn't like RA. But who cares. Each album has its own flavour. You just go with the flow and wait, these songs might grow on you.

Settle down. Why should someone have to put 'IMO' in their comment(s)? Clearly it's his/her opinion; you know it, I know it, and so does everyone else. Someone shouldn't have to write a disclaimer just because you didn't like what they wrote. Also, it's okay to write something negative about Pearl Jam; the band isn't reading these comments. Don't expect a medal for being their knight in shining armour. You sound like a complete kiss-ass IMO

Thanks. Second compliment in this thread. First I am a "dick" and now a "kiss-ass". And whose ass would I be kissing? I would appreciate it, before you start an assault, that you read the *whole* thread instead of one page. :fp: That would help your comments dearly and would also shed some light on *why* I stated this...

This is exactly why I get so tired of this forum at times. It is so easy to insult people on the internet and have no sense of ethics or even civility when it comes to a debate. People are "kiss-asses", "dicks", "they suck up to the band" etc. etc. etc. Saying something "negative" about the band is being "an independent thinker" (yeah right); having some hummility or trying to start an adult conversation, you are immidiatly "their knight in shining armour". If you had read my comments in this thread you would have seen what I have written about criticism and that I am/ was even critical myself. It is this kind of thinking that made me respond to begin with.

That was it! I remember (it was late at night, too much to drink at an hostel) that I kept pronouncing it as "skull" and that everyone cracked up. Followed by new rounds of alcohol of course.

  • will the album version of 'future days' include the rest of the band contributing though ? i remember 'speed of sound', 'unthought known' from backspacer and 'gone' from their self-titled being previewed live or on soundcheck with it just having eddie and / or boom, so is it probable that the album version will be similar as those mentioned songs turned out to be ?
...Pearl Jam, a group filled with pride, passion, and intricate musicianship. Their music is full of subtle textures, rich color, soul-searching power, imagery, and eerie dissonance.

You're not allowed to get upset because it's only my opinion and I'm not stating it as a fact. When did I say writing negative things about Pearl Jam made someone an independent thinker?

Hey Foxmulder, this makes me a bit  . I already made statements about IMO. "You are", "you sounded like", semantics: implications are what we write in between the lines. Either way, it is getting old. It is Saturday night. The board is exploding about the ticket sales. And I think we both have better things to do. So let me just say "skull" and leave it at that. ;)

Just Breathe. Just took a second listen on YouTube and not feeling Future Days. It will probably grow on me, but with Just Breathe there was a good guitar melody to learn. Future days is very straightforward. We'll see how the album version is.
