I am playing all day Cold Confession and I can't stop it.....that is one bad ass slow song not JB or FD
CAN'T KEEP CRAZY MARY IN MY TREE NO WAY NOT FOR YOU. ALL THOSE YESTERDAY JEREMY is ALONE, SAD with RATS & BUGS it's HARD TO IMAGINE a JEREMY a BETTER MAN.
LIFE WASTED, BLOOD on the PORCH, LAST KISS is a WISHLIST DEEP DOWN NOTHING AS IT SEEMS WHY GO COME BACK ALIVE SPIN THE BLACK CIRCLE and SMILE.
This is pretty much how I feel as well. MYM is a cool little punk song but nothing special, I'd give it a grade of a B. The other two are some of the most generic tunes I have ever heard them write. D+ for Lightning Bold, D- for Future Days. I'm starting to think this will be the last album, never felt that way before but the quality is just not there. I think even the band knows it deep down. I'm thrilled they are still around and playing together but the evolution of this band probably ended with Rio Act. Avacado & Backspacer were good records but offered nothing new. I really hope the rest of this album has some suprises because right now my expectations are at an all time low.
No big fan of either but from what I have heard, I have to go with Just Breathe. Future days makes me cringe as well. It is definitely not what I wanted to hear.
Both Future Days and Lightning Bolt has found the skeptic in me for the new album. Im not ready to give up on it just yet off course, but im not holding my breath. MYM was pretty cool. One hit and two (bad) misses for me so far.
The bands does sound good though.
I hear you totally but I really think you need to give Lightening bolt some more listens. Crank up a high quality version and listen to it a few times. I think its a great tune. i like mym but like you said.. its nothing that earth shattering. I'm sure people said the same or worse about lukin when it came out. But I like unthought known a lot too. If you hate that song then i could see you hating this one too i guess. I'm also a huge fan of severed hand and you said you didn't like avocado. I'd take unthought known.. severed hand, and lightening bolt over bushleager any day. As far as songs like Can't keep, Save you and green disease that i like a lot from riot act... when they came out someone could say the same thing you did about them being nothing new and the band stopped evolving prior to that.
But I dont get the hate around here for avocado at all. To me songs like big wave and life wasted are kinda generic but songs like Marker in the Sand, unemployable, aand parachutes are like nothing they ever did before. I dont love parachutes live though. But Marker kills!
I'm not even a big fan of Riot Act, I just think it was the last time the band went out of their comfort zone. I think Avocado is a better record, Marker is amazing and the first half of the album was solid. Even liked most of Backspacer, Unthought Known is solid and there are some other above average songs. I guess I'm hoping for a new direction that still meshes with the core sound of the band. That's what made No Code & Yield so special and Binaural and Riot Act to a lesser degree. I think they are sadly on a U2 type course. With Avocado being there return to basics record as ATYCLB was for U2. Then U2 decided to follow that same path for two additional records and the results were boring at best. Maybe the well is dry, hey it's been 20 plus years, everything runs its course.

Hold on now. The same thing was said when Binaural came out and when RA came out and when ST came out and when BS came out. First the initial excitement and than the come down. I do not necessarily think it is about the "well drying up" (to whose standards btw?) as the band taking a new direction with their songs. I think this is one of the problems with PJ: that they have a high diversity of songs and play diff. genres. They play classic rock, punk, acoustic ballads pushing towards folk, spoken word and anything in between. This gives them on the one hand an enormous fanbase, but on the other hand it also gives them equal as much anticipation and expectation. Some like the punk songs, others wish they would stop, some only want rock, others want ballads and experimental music etc. They can never abide to all these wishes and expectations. All they can do is be PJ and PJ is punk, rock, midtempo, acoustic and songs with a splash of experimental.
I for one would like them to go all for it and make an enormous experimental album, a rock opera, just one piece of music, that shakes their fanbase to the core. But that is just my perspective.
As for CC; it is a good song and I would love to hear a full blown studio version, but lets all just wait how the studio versions of LB and FD sounds like. For me they start to grow on me and the lyrics are better than first thought. I think this album still has something up its sleeve.
Did anyone notice btw how Ed was looking at Mike during the end of LB? He even said "fuck" at some point. Was the guitar suppose to kick in sooner? That would have certainly given the end of the song some more edge.
I am playing all day Cold Confession and I can't stop it.....that is one bad ass slow song not JB or FD
i think we all agree to that
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
Remember when Nothing As It Seems was "the new song" way back when ? How good was that. It was like, this isn't Ten-style funk jam PJ, but it has depth.
It's the depth that seems to be missing from lightning bolt, and similar new-pj fast-track writing (see "backspacer").
Now future days just totally blows and clearly belongs on an Ed solo album - so let's hope that was the "one Ed solo album song" for this album and here won't be anymore. Although i did think Just breathe had depth - it's just it still was Ed solo and not PJ.
It is a shame it has come to this though. Remember when "the Ed solo song" was like super good? (see "Off He Goes"). It's like the majority of the last 2 albums is unusable.
MYM is promising, so let's hope that mike mccready's comment about this new album being pink floydy holds true.
When NAIS was debuted at the bridge school, they also debuted "in thin air". At he time I remember being like "wow this sucks". But they seldom played In Thin Air live after that. Maybe Future Days goes that way too after this show.
I mean, BoB might be unavailable to sit in on tour again for Future Days - he might be busy doing The View, or Oprah, or an Activia commercial, or watching Waiting to Exhale at home alone with a bowl of ice cream and some pickles. And without him, there would be no one to play those super complex Hallmark greeting card jingles.
But, we're definitely going to hear LB again. So hopefully the performance at Wrigley was still a bit rehearsally and it will pack more punch once they have a chance to play together / practice more...........which they won't, because soundgarden will be touring in Europe.
Did anyone notice btw how Ed was looking at Mike during the end of LB? He even said "fuck" at some point. Was the guitar suppose to kick in sooner? That would have certainly given the end of the song some more edge.
just watched a pretty good video of lightning bolt and that's the first thing i noticed - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfcqbsEIn-g ... something was definitely off .. Ed didn't look happy towards the end

He actually threw a "fuck" Mike's way. That much was very clear. I think he came in late or something. Kind of made Ed look like a dick.
There really shouldn't be any need for anybody to ever have to put IMO after comments on the internet - its like a universal given that what people are typing is their own opinion. It would get old faster than banging on about people having a sense of entitlement in every thread.
I remember my 10th grade English teacher that you never needed to say "I think" in an essay, since it is your writing. Same applies here. we are all just expressing our opinions/thoughts/feelings.
If you dont like a song, just skip it and find one you do like. Life is too short.

Yes, there have been skeptics about pretty much every album since vs, and I have been there for all of them with mixed feelings every time. VS didn’t sound like ten, Vitalogy sounded too dark, What the hell is this? (No code). But the difference then has always been that there has always been something there to stir my interest. I didn’t find the joy with the music because I couldn’t fully grasp it. Even though I was a pessimist, the mystique of the music was overwhelming and had to be concurred. Eventually I found what I was looking for. The PJ feeling, the music that took me places. Pearl Jam was the only band that could spin me around, roll me over… It has been a fucking circus. At least of the bands I have had the chance to follow. Pink Floyd has also managed this, but I am too young to have been there for the ride. Pearl Jam and Eddie seemed to have some sort of power over me, and they obviously knew me better than I knew myself sometimes, so it seemed. This relationship is fading now, and I think it is awfully sad to acknowledge it.
So Pearl Jam has taken their songwriting in new directions with every single album. Nothing wrong with that off course, but with Backspacer and the first tastes of LB, the soul and magic is gone for me. I want to like this stuff, but I am unable to.
It becomes more and more evident that PJ and I have travelled different routes. I will always treasure the irreplaceable jewelry they gave me in the 90’s. That music will always be extremely valuable to me. There has been some great stuff in the 2000’s as well, but further between them. As for now, I am hoping that the new album will have something for me too, but as I have said here and in other posts, I worry the new album will have little to offer me personally.
If so happens, I will accept it and move on. Pearl Jam owes me absolutely nothing and I hope they stay together to play and make new music for a long time. I will be there listening.

The point I'm trying to make is: we only heard three songs. A punk, a midtemp and a slow song; this album has undoubdetly more up its sleeve. Imagine if people would write a whole album off when Who You Are came out. (And many people wanted too.) Or even NAIS (which not everyone liked), and still don't . I am not even discussing Thin Air. We have to see the songs in the context of the album. Than you still might not like it, but at least it is based on the whole album.
For me, I liked BS and I think they created also some new fans here. They are going in a diff. direction. It might not suite you, but that is what this band is: they go into uncharted terrain. No need to think that the well is "dried up". (I thought that when RA came out and here they still are many years later.)
I am talking about the trend, the evolution of pj music from my own point of view. The trend of me losing touch with pj has been going on since Riot Act. And up until this piont it has been a constant one.
When I talk about the new songs, it looks like the trend will continue. Like I said in my post, I havent given up on the new album. My point is merely that i am not able to follow the band as closely as I hoped to be. With news of new material, I always get some of this hope back ,that I can wrap my mind around pjs music again and love it like I used to. But it doesnt look like it will happen this time.
Dont misunderstand me, I am talking from what I have heard so far. Whatever coming in october will come. New discussions then
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."

I am playing all day Cold Confession and I can't stop it.....that is one bad ass slow song not JB or FD
i think we all agree to that
I don't.
Cold Confession got left off the record for very good reason to my ear.
Both Just Breathe and Future Days are lovely tunes, and I find it difficult to imagine much better musical expressions from a happy husband and father. Trying to recreate the melancholy and angst of stuff like Black now would sound contrived and artificial.
Writing a few commercially accessible records within the context of a 20 year career is no bad thing. I worry that the objection is one of elitism and pretentiousness more than genuine musical preference.

True... But you also learn in essay writing that you should motivate and vilidate your argument and not present them as universal truths; that is the point of an essay - to argue.

That sounds like a fair deal .
And for all purposes of clarification: I didn't like RA. Still not my favourite. I thought ST was a bit contrived. Where RA was so laid back and obscure, there was this enormous (over)compensation (in my opinion at least) in ST. Where Ed was mumbling in RA, he was screaming in ST. To me Backspacer was back to the former shape of PJ. I felt, and still feel, it is a more natural follow up of Binuaral. That is just my opinion though. So I don't see the trend you are reffering to. To me they broke this trend with BS. I do agree however that RA, no matter how you look at it (you either like the album or not) was at some level - which I cannot put my finger on - a turning point; both musically and lyrically. Is like they (on purposely) stepped away from something. Maybe it was the "what" question Ed Vedder is referring to in PJ20. Maybe it was time for them to approach the music making differently. Either way, I think that the experiences in 2000 didn't leave the band unscathed.
The more "positive" approach of BS (even though the lyrics of some songs are quite bleak) was to me a break from the depression in RA and the over politicized ST. Here there was a more philosophical undertone (going back to the core, the basics, the importance of life - hence the title) than in the two previous records. In the same way Binaural had a philosophical undertone; so did No Code, Vitalogy and VS. I truly missed that in RA and it felt disjointed in ST.
No album can top Vitalogy in my book. But I think the crap that Binaural (that is when it really started), RA, ST and BS got oven the years is sometimes a bit too much. They are good records in their own right, just with a different atmosphere. I like that. I don't want an endless repeat.
Regarding CC: it is a good song. I like it too. But I can't compare an almost finished demo to a live song. I want to hear the studio versions.
That said: Pearl Jam, it is really time to release that Lost Dogs 2 album!!!!
Ps to Dimitri: Dutch and Norwegian do have linguistic similarities. I used to be able say "cheers" in Norwegian. Forgot unfortunately .

I deleted my earlier post because yours says it better. Thanks.
Lightning Bolt(the song) kind of has an AC/DC feel to it..which is fine cause I know a lot of people like that sound that has been perfected by them. But Pearl Jam HAD a unique sound in the 90's..deep, meaningful lyrics, with great phrasing by Eddie's deep baritone voice. Mike McCready's long solos took you on a magical ride. Maybe we were all fighting and struggling to get somewhere and find some meaning back in the day. The fact that the band now have families and wealth/stability, and are at peace when a lot of us are not in that space means there may not be that connection to the new music. The fact that they reached their happiness before many of the fans means some will not like hearing it. Guy working a dead end job or someone who wants to quit but can't will not like Future Days as much as Not For You. Married guy with wife and kids can appreciate Just Breathe and how lucky he is.
Maybe the songs just don't have universal appeal, and it doesn't FEEL like the band is speaking to you like Ten did or Vs. Or Vitalogy. Pearl Jam music used to have a spiritual quality..now it seems they just wanna rock..which I guess maybe would be expected when your turning 50 and wanting to hold on to your youth. Either way, it will be nice to add a few new songs to the shuffle list ..if not the entire album come October.

i understand ed is starting to have this old man tendency to write crap like this, but this is why you make solo records.
EVERY FUCKING SONG on Moonlander is not only better, but shits all over, both of these garbage songs.
i shouldn't have to fast forward on a pearl jam record. i never did on the first 8.
dear ed,
i love you
but if you wanna write filler
make it like aye davanita
Or maybe you should accept that this band has changed and move on. Try to put some IMO in your sentences. "This shits all over IMO", these are "garbage songs IMO" etc. You make it sound that these are universal truths and they are not. It is your conception, your intepretation, your subjective state of mind. No need to express it 20 000x. You would not be the first fan that stops being a fan or doesn't like the "new" direction of your band nor the last. You win some, you loose some. I like new directions, I think Aye Davanita is a true song "without words" instead of a filler, and stop, please stop, (and this is not specifically aimed at you) putting *your* demands, hopes, and your likes and dislikes onto an artist. Let them grow and renew themselves *in their own way*. I personally didn't like RA. But who cares. Each album has its own flavour. You just go with the flow and wait, these songs might grow on you.
Settle down. Why should someone have to put 'IMO' in their comment(s)? Clearly it's his/her opinion; you know it, I know it, and so does everyone else. Someone shouldn't have to write a disclaimer just because you didn't like what they wrote. Also, it's okay to write something negative about Pearl Jam; the band isn't reading these comments. Don't expect a medal for being their knight in shining armour. You sound like a complete kiss-ass IMO

Thanks. Second compliment in this thread. First I am a "dick" and now a "kiss-ass". And whose ass would I be kissing? I would appreciate it, before you start an assault, that you read the *whole* thread instead of one page. :fp: That would help your comments dearly and would also shed some light on *why* I stated this...
This is exactly why I get so tired of this forum at times. It is so easy to insult people on the internet and have no sense of ethics or even civility when it comes to a debate. People are "kiss-asses", "dicks", "they suck up to the band" etc. etc. etc. Saying something "negative" about the band is being "an independent thinker" (yeah right); having some hummility or trying to start an adult conversation, you are immidiatly "their knight in shining armour". If you had read my comments in this thread you would have seen what I have written about criticism and that I am/ was even critical myself. It is this kind of thinking that made me respond to begin with.
I deleted my earlier post because yours says it better. Thanks.
No problem. I have been reading some of your posts in other threads, seems we share a similar approach to pj's music.

I am playing all day Cold Confession and I can't stop it.....that is one bad ass slow song not JB or FD
LIFE WASTED, BLOOD on the PORCH, LAST KISS is a WISHLIST DEEP DOWN NOTHING AS IT SEEMS WHY GO COME BACK ALIVE SPIN THE BLACK CIRCLE and SMILE.

It's growing up just like me.
So hopefully the performance at Wrigley was still a bit rehearsally and it will pack more punch once they have a chance to play together / practice more...........which they won't, because soundgarden will be touring in Europe.
just watched a pretty good video of lightning bolt and that's the first thing i noticed - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfcqbsEIn-g ... something was definitely off .. Ed didn't look happy towards the end
He actually threw a "fuck" Mike's way. That much was very clear. I think he came in late or something. Kind of made Ed look like a dick.
I remember my 10th grade English teacher that you never needed to say "I think" in an essay, since it is your writing. Same applies here. we are all just expressing our opinions/thoughts/feelings.
If you dont like a song, just skip it and find one you do like. Life is too short.

I like European session of this forum.
In US session, I need to go to sleep.
2012: Arras, Berlin 1-2
2013: Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires
2014: Milano, Trieste, Vienna, Berlin
2016: NY MSG 1

That sounds like a fair deal
Forgot unfortunately
I deleted my earlier post because yours says it better. Thanks.

Supposedly an outtake of the ST sessions. It was called "cold concession", but maybe "cold confession" is better
