Bold statement I know...but this is the first time in a long time (1995-1996?) that the surviving grandaddies of grunge (SG, AIC, PJ) all have put out a studio album in the same rolling year (I didn't count 1994 because Jar of Flies is an EP).
Perfect timing for this 40 year old to help stave off my mid life crisis!
I absolutely LOVE the new SG and AIC (I almost won't mind if when I see them in September, they play all Duvall era songs!)...so here's to PJ following those two instant classics up with one of their own in October!

I think grunge had its time in the sun, so anything released now wouldn't quite feel "grunge", even if released by the same people who made it so back in the day. That said, it's always good to have an onslaught of great new music. Bring on the "Bolt"!.0

Damn. It's almost been 10 years since Jar of Flies came out?
lol.

Did I mention I'm 40 and have alzheimers in my blood?
Good catch though! After all that excruciating wikipedia research I go and muck up the damn Jar of Flies release year!208XXX (September 2000) - 21 Pearl Jam shows, 2 Eddie Vedder shows, 1 Temple Of The Dog show

Oh....is it 1993 again?0
-
I semi-humbly disagree.
AIC is decent and pretty good with Duvall, but they're hey day was with Layne Staley. Nirvana can't tour anymore (for obvious reasons).
I'd think 1993 was the best grunge year. Vs, In Utero, and Jar of Flies. Jar of Flies might be an EP but its still my favorite thing AIC has ever recorded.
The big four of grunge were still active, still touring, still strong, and still recording albums.
2013 really doesn't feel like 1993 to me.0 -

Oh JHC!!! Sorry, besides my age and early alzheimers, I will blame a bug I've got right now (trying to power through another day at work). Can I change my post to Nov. 2012 - Nove. 2013...best 12 months of grunge ever? :P
Whatever...all I'm saying is the new AIC and SG rock and I can't wait for new PJ too (all within the same 365 day span)! :oops:208XXX (September 2000) - 21 Pearl Jam shows, 2 Eddie Vedder shows, 1 Temple Of The Dog show

Jar of Flies was early 1994...but yes obviously the 1993-1994 era was the best. But I'm liking the late 2012-2013 revival era!!!208XXX (September 2000) - 21 Pearl Jam shows, 2 Eddie Vedder shows, 1 Temple Of The Dog show

Can't keep a good thing down...look at the rock of the 70s. Still a major inspiration to today's artist. That's older than most of us. Plus classic rock stations are beginning to recognize the great artist of the 90s. I hear pj, sg, nirvana, aic, green day even( I know i know) all being played along side led zeppelin, Beatles, stones. Even groups like black Flagg and misfits are still around. LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL!!! :roll:0

Yeah dude I can't wait to mosh out to "Future Days" in the GA section... Get my doc martins and just start thrashing when they segue into the twinkle twinkle little star extended ukulele jam.

A couple of years ago I went to the Big 4 show at Yankee Stadium. Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, & Metallica. Yes I'm a fan of other music too. Metallica didn't NEED the show w/ the other three bands having just finished up their own tour for Death Magnetic. Now while not a fan of Anthrax or Slayer it was an Epic show. It would be awesome to do this w/ PJ, SG, AIC, STP, Candlebox, (Foo's..too big?) This would easily fill a number of stadiums across the country. Also the original Big 4 show in Bulgaria was simulcasted to Imax theaters from Bulgaria, which could be done from the crazy crowds PJ had recently in South America.
Has PJ moved on from the Grunge stigma...of course, but even w/ these reformed bands & replacement lineups the music is still great and better than most anything since. It's not going to have the original feel obviously. I know there are a lot of "Grunge" haters on this board but I like the new AIC & SG music and is PJ too good to remember their roots. Matt Cameron would be either pull double duty or have a replacement for PJ/SG.
In any case good music is good music which can be subjective but I like the new material & I would much rather hear man in a box or nutshell played live w/ a replacement than complain about it no being Layne singing it.0 -
Awesome. I take it that's what you did back in the day when they ripped into scorchers like "Oceans", "Garden", "Small Town", "Nothingman", "Black", "Indifference", "Immortality", "Better Man", et cetera?PU38569 wrote:Yeah dude I can't wait to mosh out to "Future Days" in the GA section... Saw Alice in Chains along with Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, and others at Rock on the Range in May in Columbus. It was awesome.
Alice in Chains was my favorite of the weekend.0 -

It's all been fantastic. Love the new SG and AIC...plus over the last few years, we have had the pleasure of new STP, Pumpkins, and Foo (not Nirvana, but I still love them.)

It's kinda cool that 3 of the big 4 grunge bands are putting out albums so close together, but the SG and AIC albums are a long way from "instant classic". AIC's is pretty boring with a good song or 2 and King Animal is solid, but far from great.toungblood wrote:A couple of years ago I went to the Big 4 show at Yankee Stadium. I dunno... That would seem kinda cheesy and forced with bands like Candlebox. A more natural fit like AIC or Soundgarden could be pretty cool. The only way it would come close to selling out any stadium is with the Foo Fighters involved.0 -

Are the Foos bigger than PJ? I've never thought so but maybe I'm not being very objective here.0
