New Album - who else is holding out?

With Future Days and Lightning Bolt all over YouTube, it's testing me but...

Aside from MYM, I'm committed to holding out until I get the full album in-hand before listening to any other tracks.

I'll have 4 days to cram before Brooklyn 2, but I think it'll be worth it to truly enjoy the album the way it was meant to be heard.

I'm holding out til I can hear them by way of subpar cellphone recordings, from show and soundchecks, or the eventual leak.

every since the 4/3/94 Fox Theater in Atlanta show, when the band played a few Vitalogy songs before they were released on album, I made the decision that I would listen to any song that the band volunteered either through the release of a single or live, but I will no listen to leaked songs that the band didn't volunteer.

with that said, I like all three songs from LB that I have heard so far. a lot.

    True, good point.

I wouldn't rule out if they did a tv or radio performance like Letterman or SNL prior to release, but no YouTube or audience recordings for me.

Since the only show I'm going to on the fall tour is three days before the album is released I figure there's no point in holding out. As cool as it is to hear a song debut for the first time live I prefer to listen to it beforehand. I had a week or so to get familiar with MYM for London and I hope to have some familiarity with whatever they play in Buffalo as well.

That being said, I expect that the two new songs from Wrigley will be played on television at some point before the tour.

It is way hard to really appreciate the songs when they are coming from a camera phone! I started to listen to Future Days but I stopped because I did not want my first listen to come from this...and more importantly make bad judgements that stay around because of the crappy sound.

Yeah, I won't listen to anything other than what's released and/or performed. I listened to EarthCam last night, so I heard LB and FD...not that I could make out much of what they sounded like, though!
I have two weeks of new album-listening this fall before Voodoo, though. I can't wait!
  • I can't hold out. Gotta listen if I can. It's new PJ!

Yep holding out. Unless they release anything else between now and the album the only song I'll hear before the album is out is Mind Your Manners.

Won't be bothering with any audience recordings of Wrigley nor Youtube. And I highly doubt any Wrigley boot will be released before the album is.

When Vitalogy was released I had already heard most of the album from import CDs, SNL and the STBC single. In fact KROQ in Los Angeles debuted it in its entirety two weeks prior to its release. For every Pearl Jam album since the only songs I heard prior to the release of the albums were the singles (Who You Are, Given To Fly, NAIS, I Am Mine, WWS and The Fixer). Well, for Yield, I did hear DTE and Brain of J live in Oakland in Nov 1997. In my opinion, Lightning Bolt should be released a week or two earlier so that people going to the first few shows won't have the new album experience ruined.

I was in the same boat when Vitalogy came out. I actually was more disappointed though in some cases, particularly with "Not For You". The SNL version was so intense, but when the studio recording was released, it was pretty underwhelming in comparison. I've watched the Youtube video of "Lightning Bolt" only once so far and thought it was pretty good, but sounds like it might be a tune I had better wait to hear a good studio version of. With "Future Days", I started to watch it, but after a few seconds in, this sounds like a softer tune which I don't think the first listening experience should be from a sub-par audience recording.

If a professional live recording or single is released, I'll be all over it, but it's not like back in the day when something was played live or surfaced on an unofficial bootleg, it was kind of a mystery until the album came out. As great as technology can be sometimes, it's kind of ruined the aspect of appreciating things so much more after waiting and guessing for months/years at a time, or latching onto the most minuscule bit of information about the band or new music coming out. I'd gladly trade Twitter, Facebook, and all these other social media outlets for a breaking MTV News report any day! ;)
