Filter frontman Richard Patrick mocks Pearl Jam's Jeremy

I interviewed Filter frontman Richard Patrick the other day and he made a comment about Jeremy that made me crack up.

http://www.alternativenation.net/?p=29013

"I was the first guy in the world to take the R. Budd Dwyer thing, a public suicide, other than that wimpy Pearl Jam song, you know that fuckin Jeremy thing. I brought it way more to the front and talked about how it might have been a good thing, depending on how you looked at it. Hey man nice shot, like it woke everybody the fuck up, ‘the smoke got clear, they’ve got a new kind of fear.’ At least those people right there know that they’re alive they lived, and it’s time to fuckin live life right. "

I think it's two different approaches.

To me, the Filter song is more along the lines of mocking the suicide.
Jeremy is about saying, "Well, if this kid had a stronger support system, if people actually cared about him and listened to what he had to say, he might still be alive."

    who?

Pearl Jam; they formed a rock band in 1990 during the height of Seattle's grunge era and were part of the big 4 (nirvana, soundgarden, alice and chains, pearl jam) then they shunned the public eye in the mid 90's and top 40 music fans tend to be surprised they're still around.

Do we really care? I certainly don't. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I'm not sure why he had to bring up Jeremy. Musicians really shouldn't take shots at each other. So unnecessary.

Filter are ok'ish but haven't lived up to expectations. All these bullshit muso comments always smack of penis envy to me. Richard Patrick isn't the main purveyor of it though, that crown goes on the head of Billy Corgan (I love Smashing Pumpkins by the way). You make a living from music? Not enough for some people, they need to criticize someone else's work in order to make headlines and feel relevant. Ask someone who Pearl Jam are, many won't have a clue but a good number will have heard Alive and Jeremy. Ask someone who Filter are, 99% of people won't have a clue. It's all pretty irrelevant I guess but I do hate when people try to use a name to get noticed... :|

well i'm one of the 1% who know who they are. Actually their last album "The Sun Comes Out Tonight" was very good (well at least better than their previous two), IMO. Sounded like "old" Filter to me.

Filter opened up for Bush's comeback tour last year. A lineup of Filter Chevelle and Bush wouldve sold out arena's awhile ago (ok chevelle was a few years after)...anywho, they were ok at best live, but to me it says a lot about their current relevance if they are opening up for a hasbeen...

I always liked that song when it was on the radio all the time, though I sort of thought of it as a NIN sound in a way. My husband must have some kind of an obsession with that "hey many nice shot" line because he says it all the time for some reason I have yet to understand. So I know of the band but I had no clue that Filter was still together. Hey Richard, nice try.
