This is only what I hear. There are a lot of ambiguous noises that could be a plethora of words...i did my best guessing in those cases. I in no way stand 100% behind the lyrics I figured out. I am more than willing to accept when I'm wrong. Without further ado, here you go.

Mind Your Manners - Pearl Jam

I've got an unfortunate feeling, I've been beaten down.
I feel I don't believe and now the truth is coming out.
What they'll take is more than a bow (vow?)
They're taking your innocence and then they're going on a burning bow.... (???? undecipherable to me)

I'm only saying
Mind your manners

I caught myself believing that I needed God
And I knelt inside (beside?) the something we sure could use him now.
Try (drown?) my patience, my patience tried.
These words alone, they've done enough, makes me want to cry

I'm only saying
Mind your manners
That's all that I'm saying

Self freedom lies and that I'm physically redeemed
And I'd live another life, And I've solved our mystery
Right around the corner, it could be bigger than ourselves
We can will it to the sky, or we could something else.

I'm only saying
Mind your manners
Always praying

Self freedom lies and that I'm physically redeemed
And I'd live another life, and I've solved our mystery
Right around the corner, it could be bigger than ourselves
We can will it to the sky, or we could something else

Go to heaven, that's right. How do you like it living in hell?
Go to heaven, that's right. How do you like it living in hell?
Go to heaven, that's right. How do you like it living in hell?

Living in hell.

  • To give the thread a push and motivate some responses, here is my basic interpretation...

it's really simple. It's a passive aggressive letter to the WBC. Possibly written in the eye of a non WBC christian, but I hesitate in saying that for I don't want to assume Ed's (or anyone else in the band) religious identity.

This is what I'm hearing, with headphones:

Mind Your Manners - Pearl Jam

I've got an unfortunate feeling, I've been beaten down.
I feel I don't believe and now the truth is coming out.
What they've taken is more than a vow
They've taken your innocence and then they throw 'em on a burning pile

    All along they're sayin'
    Mind your manners

I caught myself believing that I needed God
And if it’s hard for some
We sure could use it now
    Try my patience
    My patience tried
    This world's a long life,
living it makes me wanna cry

    All along they're sayin'
    Mind your manners
    It's all they're sayin'

    Self-realized and metaphysically redeemed...
May not live another life, May not solve our mystery
Right around the corner could be bigger than ourselves
We could will it to the sky or we could something else

    And all along they're sayin'
    Mind your manners
    Always praying

    Self-realized and metaphysically redeemed...
May not live another life, May not solve our mystery
Right around the corner could be bigger than ourselves
We could will it to the sky or we could something else

    Go to Heaven (that’s swell)
How do you like it? (living in Hell)
    Go to Heaven (that’s swell)
How do you like it? (living in Hell)
    Go to Heaven (that’s swell)
How do you like it? (living in Hell)

here are my updated lyrics based on what I've heard from you guys.

I'm pretty convinced of the chorus being "I" instead of "they're" Also, the last line in the second verse I believe is correct. I'm on the fence about the first line in the bridge. It sounds right both ways to me. I'll keep mine up for now. I changed a few lyrics though.

I remember doing this with The Fixer 4 years ago. It was fun! The Fixer as good of a song as MYM, but it was still a blast. Can't wait till they add the song to the lyrics list.

i don't know man, the fixer was good but not like this....this song thrashes and has a little more eddie anger than the "poppy" fixer (remember, it was part of target commercial, uggh)

I like RhinoJam's "pyre" over "pile" thing... I had to Google it, but it makes sense in the context and is consistent w/ Eddie's level of diction, which I think is helpful when trying to decipher lyrics.

BUT I really think he says, "Self-realizing that I'm physically fatigued." Tried listening for "redeemed" and just can't hear an "r" sound at the beginning or an "m" at the end. Plus I think "physically fatigued" fits the rest of the line better about being self-aware of one's own mortality and limitations, but still recognizing there may be more to reality than what we see... we can commit the mystery blindly to a hypocritical religious dogma, or we could not.

"Going to Heaven? That’s swell! How you like it living in Hell?" Is a good satirical punctuation to the song that reemphasizes what I see as the predominating theme.

Actually play the song and read along...

    I hear:

I've got an unfortunate feeling; I've been beaten down.
I feel I don't believe, and now the truth is coming out:
What they've taken is more than a bow...
They've taken young innocents and then they've thrown 'em on a burnin' pyre.
All along they’re saying, "Mind your manners!"

I caught myself believing that I needed God and if it's out there somewhere we sure could use it now.
Tried my patience; my patience tried.
These words alone have done enough; it makes me wanna cry.
All along they’re saying, "Mind your manners!"
    [That]'s all I'm saying

Self-realizing that I'm physically fatigued; may not live another life, may not solve our mystery.
Right around the corner could be bigger than ourselves, we could will it to the sky, or we could ... something else.

No longer saying, "Mind your manners!"
    [They're] always praying

Self-realizing that I'm physically fatigued; may not live another life, may not solve our mystery.
Right around the corner could be bigger than ourselves, we could will it to the sky, or we could ... something else.

Going to heaven? That's swell! How you like it living in hell? (2x)
Going to heaven? That’s swell! How you like your living hell?
"You are everything, and everything is you. Me, you... you, me -- it's all related."
