Curious to hear opinion on the album artwork.

Lots of symbolism going on...

Mind your manners..

Through the eyes of holiday whisky an evil cyclops in a yashmak with devil horns and some kind of antenna transmitting something, possibly Islamic propaganda? Can this be deemed offensive? I don't know? Is a yashmac the waterproof version? :? The album will be great and will have some cutting edge politics in the lyrics. PJ have returned the way we love them.... 8-)

    Well said...

The waiting drove me mad... I can't wait to hear the album and more importantly read the lyrics.

The lightning bolt is Pearl Jam's final acceptance that they are this generation's Grateful Dead, and in tribute to the Steal Your Face symbol, they went with eyeball and lightning. :)

I'm really not sure what to think of it other than it looks awesome! I've always been a sucker for black red and white.

  • It's all a reference to religious ideology. The cyclops from Greek mythology (or at least the Odyssey) The fact there's a giant eye represents the all knowing, all seeing, omnipresence of God. The lightning bolt is a symbol for Zeus, which has culturally defused into the lightning bolt referring to the power Gods have on the world. The antennas form a cross and the crescent moon represents Islam. The sound waves represent that all of these world ideologies have been transmitted across radio and television around the world, not necessarily accurately either. We all have pre-conceived notions and we have media and pundits to blame. And to bring it full circle, the over all image is of a monster. Not necessarily the religions being the monster, but the negative extremists (WBC, Terrorists, etc.) getting all of this attention turning people off to these belief systems. The media is included in this monster.

Mind Your Manners is a perfect example. I believe it's about the WBC.

It appears to me to be the work of Jeff. Which I like, but if you make it Orange and take away some of the detail, it looks just like RNDM art, even the PJ font is very similar to RNDM. I was hoping for something to be unique to PJ, not so much like RNDM.

Besides being very modern, bold, and graphic I see a small homage to surfer Mark Richards whose main sponsor was Lightning Bolt surfboards (we are even getting a boardshort collab, too!):

Clearly a sign of the SS. That along with the gun, crucifix and blood clearly indicate that the band are in fact closet Nazis. There is just no denying it.

What's even more interesting is how he is completely sincere and believes it 100%, when it's obviously one of those situations where someone has their conclusion made up, and then looks for confirmation of that belief in everything they look at. I'm mean, clearly that's a pig on the album art, not a dog. But I'm sure we could connect pigs to the devil in some way. I wonder if the guy know Ed lived in San Diego? Hmmmm.....wait a second. Maybe the guy really is on to something

The thing we all forget is that it will never be known the exact date and time of the rapture. I'm pretty sure that that is written in the bible. People who try to figure it out are wasting their time. lol

So let me get this straight. The ancient Egyptians had images of Christ in their hieroglyphs? It all makes sense if you let go of all rational thought and intelligence.

@ PJ Fan est. 1990 is on the right track in that the album cover is composed of various "religious" symbols, including the cyclops and lightening bolts, etc. However, "religion" isn't exactly the right term because symbols have been used for many thousands of years, long before most religions were even established.

In addition, many of the symbols have been used in alchemy or even used in a psychological perspective which hints at their origins being from the spiritual realm. Which would explain why every religion through the history of the world has use them in one way or another, being that every religion is merely a different interpretations of the spiritual realm. So, for me at least, these are spiritual symbols for the most part.

For example, the crescent moon has been known as a symbol for man's continual, yet incomplete search for his/her inner light, his/her soul. The moon itself=luna=mother=giver of life=womb=the place in which we look to return to. One could interpret the "head" image on LIghtning Bolt as a whole as the head of a dog=beast=dragon=father who blocks our path back to the giver of life and we look to slay it within ourselves in order to reach that final goal. Moreover, the tower in the Siren's artwork represent our accent to a higher consciousness our our accent to the spirit world, as well as being an obstacle in our path to the "creator".

The many circles used in the album cover art and singles artwork, or even the serpent (when eating it's own tail) in the Infallible artwork are long-accepted symbols for the union of both man and woman (also notice the sperm in the bottle(womb) in My Father's Son artwork), as well as the cycle of life (life to death, death to life/reincarnation). Related to this also are the flames represented in My Father's Son and Swallowed Whole artwork. Flames=the phoenix rising=the accent to the spiritual realm after death. There is a lot of reference to mortality in all of this artwork and I am pretty sure the music and lyrics of this album are going to touch on this as well.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the album cover, are the colors chosen to be used. For eons, the colors red and white have been used to symbolically represent man and woman respectively as well at the battle with the beast to return to the giver of life (blood and bone of the slayed beast/hence the blood in Mind Your Manners/Pendulum/Future Days artwork). And as we've heard in the Sirens single, I believe there is going to be along of reference to love in this album.

Synchronicitially (or coincidentally if you believe in that), when Lightning Bolt was announced I happened to be reading Hidden Symbolism of Alchemy and the Occult Arts by Herbert Silberer, had also just read many other books on spirituality, reincarnation, past life regression, etc. It's not a coincidence. I had a feeling this album was going to all about this sort of thing. It's kind of cool in my opinion.

OMG!! Pearl Jam has been taken over by the Illuminati & New World Order!!!
    :lol: :P :D:lol::lol::)
Personally....not big on the cover art for this one...too plain, too much symbolism. I prefer more elaborate art work, more color. But the album art work is the only thing I will be critical of...it's about the music anyway and I love each and every PJ album, every song, every lyric, every face melt! Toodles....have a great tour everyone!!

  • In the "Carrie and Pearl Jam Interview" seen here ===>> IFC.COM , you can see a mask or some sorta pinata up in the corner of the room... not saying that it was the inspiration for the cover... but it did catch my eye when I saw it... it does have an uncanny resemblance to the "Lightning Bolt" Cover...

Hell, if Groxt can see the end times in the cover, I think I am doing just fine with this one...

^^^ this is what I thought as well...totally The Odyssey, the Sirens: Definition: Sirens are seductive female creatures in Greek mythology probably best known for their part in the Odyssey where their song lured sailors to their death. Odysseus ordered his crew to plug their ears with wax (on the advice of Circe) so as not to be lured by the Sirens' song. In another story from Greek myth, the story of the Argonauts, Orpheus sang sweetly enough to keep the men from succumbing to the Sirens.
There were either two or three Sirens, who were the daughters of the sea god Phorcys or the river god Achelous.

Now I want to re-read the book and look for more possible tie-ins. :geek:
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

I think that there is much more to the artwork than meets the eye. I started a thread once that went kinda unnoticed due to the whole Sirens debate(s). But I tried to analyse MYM and Sirens. Maybe we can include the live songs in there:
