Wait to hear new record until after tour???

Assuming the new album is released before the fall tour, is anyone else planning to see 3-4 shows on the tour thinking about waiting to listen to the record until after the tour? I think it could be interesting to switch it up. The downside is you wouldn't be familiar with the songs at the show and they may not mean as much to you when hearing them as opposed to if you were familiar with them (you couldn't sing along). An upside for those that have seen a lot of shows and are a little jaded could be that it shakes up the experience where there are 7-8 songs you've never heard before versus practically knowing each song by heart.
Anyway, I for sure want to ignore the leaks and the lead single so I can hear the new album in its entirety for the first time when it is released. Just thought of taking it a step further and waiting until after I hear a lot of the songs live.
Perhaps some out there have done this?

You're way stronger than me for sure,
After almost 4 years since backspacer - which was disappointing anyway, there's no way in hell I could ignore the chance to listen to something newI don't mean to offend anyone, a lot of what I say should be taken with a grain of salt... that said for most of you I'm a stranger on a computer on the other side of the world, don't give me that sort of power!0 -
i do NOT like going to shows without knowing the new songs.
Just a personal preference.
Pearl Jam or otherwise.
A lot of times, with bands I only "kind of" liked at the time I saw them in concert, but later got way into, I felt really crummy and pissed that I didn't listen to the albums heavier before I went to the show.
I would go look at the setlist in retrospect, and be like, "goddamn it man, if I had KNOWN that song, I would have fucking GONE NUTS at the show".
Same thing with pearl jam.
How can you "get in to" and fucking groove on a song if you just haven't heard it before?
I get the novelty of hearing it live for the first time,
but to me, at least, being intimately (or at least, some what) familiar with a tune is CRUCIAL to being able to fully process, appreciate, AND MENTALLY CAPTURE FOR POSTERITY, a song.
Seriously, songs I didn't really know before I saw a band play them, I go back and look at a setlist, and am like, "FUCK, they played that???"
IF I HAD KNOWN WHAT THE FUCK "IT'S OKAY" WAS WHEN I HEARD IT IN DC, I WOULD HAVE FLIPPED.
instead i was like, what the fuck is this? what the hell is he saying? "It's OJ"? where the fuck is OJ? I don't see no bronco! If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?0 -
I forgot one experience like this I had:
At the Nashville Vedder show in 2008 Eddie played "The End" that was later released on Backspacer. I was truly mesmorized during the song. I remember thinking afterwards "Is this an original or a cover? Does Ed even have it in him to write a technical guitar song like this? It is like a classical piece. That was amazing." Honestly, I may have enjoyed hearing that song at that moment at that show more than any song I've heard live since. I just remember being transfixed by it. I really don't think hearing it for the first time live would have been as good if I had already listened to it 20 times on the CD the week before the show.
It is certainly awesome to know what is coming next, but I think there is a slight downside as well.0 -

I understand completely. I was thinking to myself during my posting "If I hear song live before hearing it on the record, did I really hear it live?" A stupid thought for sure, but to your point if I heard Sleight of Hand in Chicago in 2000 and then didn't buy Binaural and hear it again until 2008, all memories of hearing Sleight of Hand probably don't exist in the brain like they would if I was looking forward to that song live in 2000.0 -
My dad saw Floyd play dark side in 72 a year before it came out. Pretty sure it was awesome, even if it was new. Bands used to do that stuff all the time. Heck, pj used to do it.
