I just found it funny that some girl came on and belittled me on your facebook for having a discussion with you, who I consider a buddy, and saying I shouldn't argue with "the fan"...

even if they are "touring" as you call it, the bootlegs are the same old crap. I guess it all comes down to some new songs, we need them BAD! Less merch, more music!

a band that took Ticketmaster to court now sells $40 dog collars? Jumpsuits? shame shame.
  • I agree dimi. The band owes us nothing. No matter what they decide to do, someone will be upset. If they put out a record every year, some people will say its too much, less quality.....etc
When it takes them a couple years between albums, people complain that its too long. Its a never ending complaint.
Old bootlegs, new bootlegs, merch .....in the end, the band makes the final decisions.
I personally love the fact that they sell dog collars. Can't have one where I live, but I think its great the band is trying to supply us with different merch. If they didn't, there would be posts about why the band sells "the same old stuff" why can't they sell PJ umbrellas, PJ walking sticks, PJ tool boxes?!?!?
The negativity is rediculous around here sometimes.
Again, the band owes us nothing. I think they go beyond for their fans. A lot more than other bands can say they do for theirs.
Just be happy they are still together and we get new music from them time to time. I sure am happy.
And PLEASE keep making "out of the box" merch.. even though some of it might not suit me, I think k its awesome they trynew things.

I am glad they put out so much merch so that the varied interests and collections fans have can be accommodated. Offering merchandise of all types to all kinds of fans from all over the world is a gigantic endeavor. It isn't an either/or on merch vs tour dates/albums, it's an additional perk of being a fan, and some of those items are exclusive only to us. Why isn't any of that good enough?

    That's what I'm saying :)
If you don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that. Complaining about it, isn't going to make the band pull it or stop selling certain items. They are just trying to reach out to every type of fan.
As far as not putting out music on a constant basis, well......that's also their choice. They have lives too. When they do decide to give us new tunes, I'll gladly buy and listen with a smile. Until then, I just wait and enjoy all the great music they have given us over the years. And when we do get new music, there will be people complaining that for all the time it took to come out, that it isn't up to par. Either way, I know I'll enjoy it all.

I don't think he's complaining. I agree with the OP. More shows less merch. It has become less and less about the music and more about peddling expensive PJ swag. They should make as much money as they can, but the next time I hear Eddie complaining about rich folks making a profit I'm probably going to roll my eyes.

I'm certainly no Pollyanna, but I am a 1/2 full girl, and I agree.
We are all in the same waiting boat, why not make the best of it?!? ;)

    The thing is...
Aren't people complaining about the last 2 records not being so great? I mean, if the last two records are not that great, then why would you want to hear them sung, live?
Keep playing the old stuff? Don't we always hear complaints about playing the same old songs, over and over again. I heard this one woman say, 'If I hear 'Betterman' one more time... i'm going to kill myself'. I told her she probably needs to re-think that because they are going to play 'Betterman' tonight... and they did... and thankfully, she didn't kill herself. I think that if you ever get to that point... maybe you've gone to too many gigs and need to take a break or something.
    ...
Personally... I like having a bunch of their crap. I don't get everything... just the crap I like. But, i do this for a bunch of other bands, too. I mean, I really don't need any more 'Foo Fighter' or 'Queens of The Stone Age' crap... but, i still get them.
    ...
I suppose it will all get old to me some day. If I ever get to the point where I get so tired of hearing them sing a song, I'll move on to another band or something.
And as for the merchandise... at some point I'll stop. I mean, how many more Pearl Jam Aquarium Worm Feeders, Sheboygan Moccocins or Pearl Jam Enema Bottles do I really need, right?

There's been 36.5 minutes of new Pearl Jam music in 7 years. Sad stat.

    ..
i was speaking in general terms.
Just seems like, there's a lot of dischord expressed here. Maybe it's me.
    ...
Personally, I understand why they don't tour as much. They've been doing it for the past 20something years not... it's got to wear on them.
And they are older now... got adult lives with adult responsibilities. The road is not the best place to raise kids... and it's got to be hard to be away from the kids for extended periods. They probably get advice from the older rockers who regret missing that time with their kids because they were always on the road. I know, it would wear on me. i'm much older now and I know I have changed... we ALL have changed. If someone hasn't changed from their 20s and are now, pushing fifty... then, they haven't grown up. They've grown old, but they haven't grown up.
Anyway... I admit, Pearl Jam is not my life. I love them... but, i don't live for them nor do I need them. I'll catch them when they swing by... but, i'm not one of those people who go to gigs for the sake of upping my number. I'm pretty content with the rate of gigs.
There's a lot of other music out there... maybe not Pearl Jam, but still... check out the 'Queens of The Stone Age' or something.

And of that 36.5 minutes... how many minutes have people here said were 'crap'?
Note: The 36.5 minutes includes, 'Ole', correct?

Is there a standard for releasing music in the rock world? I prefer quality over quantity any day.

For a productive rock band the unspoken standard is about a 45 minute LP every other year.
If bands are releasing LPs in the range of 30 minutes, they're usually releasing albums once per year.
And as Cosmo pointed out, there's been some quality control issues as well.

Think about the 'Queens Of The Stone Age'. Their last album was... 2006(?), maybe. This last album is incredible. Granted, 'Them Crooked Vultures' was basically a 'Queens Of The Stone Age' record, only recorded with Dave Grohl and John-Paul Jones... another great record.
I guess my point is... the 'Queens Of The Stone Age' are fucking awesome.
