Memorial Day is important!

I had to come back here to tell everyone Memorial Day should not be happy but remain very important!
We must remember all those who have fallen in order to push freedom forward. We should also recognize all those who serve from the Coast Guard to policemen as well. Even firefighters and all those who serve to protect. Our country is unique and we have shown the world that we are noble. We have made many mistakes along the way, but what country wouldn't? Our people, our culture and our impact on the world was all made possible from the sacrifices of our service members. Whether you are for or against our military or our actions, you have enjoyed freedoms from the result of our actions. The world is what it is today largely due to the positions and actions we have taken and the sacrifices we have made. Overall, in history, we have made the world a better place!
I went to Mount Vernon for Memorial Day and it was great to see the vision of George Washington. To walk the dirt roads he walked and think of all he had envisioned while enduring what he had endured, it was nice to take a trip back in time and understand what went on there. He was a farmer first and foremost and grew over 100 crops. He experimented with seeds, soil and fertilizers. He maximized his potential yield. He would leave Mount Vernon on his horse for long periods of time, to fight the British. He had experience from fighting the French and was highly respected. Preparation for the Constitutional Convention was always in the itinerary and meetings with other founders to share his vision was necessary. He walked away from power and when he had a chance to be King, he declined quickly. Instead of him holding on to any power, he went back to Mount Vernon when his days of service were over. This country would have been a different place without George Washington. I seen his tomb and many of his quotes and his vision was one that the world needed!
I hope that even if you consider yourself an anti-war advocate, that you realize and understand that you cant have 8 billion people get along all the time, and there are evil people, and SOMETIMES war has been necessary. MEMORIAL DAY!

A number of years ago I was visiting my father on Memorial Day weekend. We had breakfast with him and some local friends- all of whom had served in World War II. Trying to be respectful, I said something about "Happy Memorial Day" and they all looked at me as if to say, "Son, what the hell is so happy about it?" So now rather than saying "Happy Memorial Day", I always just say, "Thank you for serving, I'm glad you're still here.""It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0

no, memorial day is not important.
if it were so important, we would do one thing, and that is honor these dead by stopping starting fucking wars of choice. we would learn from history and stop repeating it.
there was a time when war was honorable. there was a time when war was our only recourse, and the last resort, not a convenient fix to our geopolitical disagreements. nowadays we will drop bombs on civilians and put our soldiers in harm's way without thinking twice about it in the name of "freedom" and/or "defending our freedom".
has anyone ever been to arlington? has anyone had a family member die in the line of duty? has anyone ever spoken to a WWII vet or vietnam vet and asked their thoughts on this "holiday"? my guess is the vast majority of people will say "no". i think taking steps to "remember" war dead while employing the same policies that got them killed in the first place is spitting in the face of their legacy.
