Team Notes:
- The Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals, 5-0, tonight at Verizon Center, in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series. The Rangers won the series, 4-3, to advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for a second consecutive season.
- New York has posted a record of 212-229-8 overall in postseason action, including a 93-141-6 mark on the road.
- The 5-0 win is the Rangers’ largest margin of victory in a Game 7, and is the first Game 7 shutout in franchise history. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it is only the eighth shutout by a road team in Game 7 in NHL history.
- The Rangers improved to 6-5 all-time in Game 7, including a 6-1 mark in Game 7 since 1992. Tonight’s win was the Blueshirts’ first in a Game 7 played on the road in franchise history.
- This is the second time in franchise history the Rangers came back from a 2-0 series deficit to advance in the playoffs, having done so in the 1996 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against Montreal.
- The Blueshirts have now come back from a 3-2 series deficit to advance in the playoffs three times in franchise history, having also done so in the 2012 Conference Quarterfinals against Ottawa and the 1994 Conference Final against New Jersey.
- This is the third time the road team won Game 7 of a playoff series after the home team won each of the previous six games in the series since the NHL adopted the current playoff format in 1994. *courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau
- The Blueshirts held the Capitals scoreless in two shorthanded situations (4:00), and are now 4-0 when not allowing a power play goal against in the postseason.
- The Rangers were credited with 27 blocked shots, compared to nine by the Capitals, led by Rick Nash’s game-high, four blocked shots.
- With the win, Head Coach John Tortorella tied Colin Campbell for third on the Rangers’ all-time playoff coaching wins list, recording his 18th postseason victory behind the Blueshirts’ bench. Coach Tortorella also improved to 5-1 all-time in Game 7 of playoff series, including a 3-1 mark with the Rangers.
Player Notes:
- Henrik Lundqvist made 35 saves to post his second straight shutout, eighth career in the playoffs, and improved to 29-33 in 62 career postseason contests. It is the 18th time he has posted 30 or more saves in a playoff game, registering a 9-9 record with a 1.49 goals against average, .941 save percentage, and four shutouts in those contests. Lundqvist passed Dave Kerr for second on the Rangers’ all-time playoff shutouts list, and is now one postseason shutout shy of Mike Richter for first in franchise history.
- Lundqvist improved to 3-1 with a 1.00 goals against average, .963 save percentage, and one shutout in four career Game 7s. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Lundqvist’s 1.00 goals against average is tied for first in the NHL all-time among goalies who have appeared in at least three career Game 7s.
- Lundqvist is the first goalie to post shutouts in Games 6 and 7 of a playoff series since Dominik Hasek with Detroit in the 2002 Western Conference Final against Colorado. *courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau
- It is the fifth time a Rangers’ goalie posted shutouts in consecutive playoff games, and the first time since Mike Richter in the first round of the 1994 playoffs.
