Question about flying to shows and purchasing posters

Hi all,

I'll be flying to the Wrigley show and will more than likely be purchasing a poster. For those of you that have done this in the past, do you typically:

1. Carry the poster on the plane with you
2. Find somewhere to ship yourself the poster
3. Hope the artist or ten club sells the poster and buy it then
4. Do you buy a poster tube before you leave or at the city of the show

Basically I'm looking for some good advice on how to deal with the poster, flights, shipping, etc...

i've taken them as a carryon in a poster tube. i have also packed the poster, in tube, in a suitcase if i took one. Pearl jam shows usually sell tubes at the show however they did not sell them on the 2012 vedder tour which sucked. i would go with the carryon and hopefully they'll sell tubes at the show, thats what im doing anyway

When I flew back from PJ20 to Germany, I had three poster tubes in my suitcase. Did the same to get my collection over the pond when I moved to the States for good. Nothing happened to them :) But I think you could also check a tube in with the carry-on. Mine were just too heavy for that

i just carried the poster on the plane with me, and held it in a bag on my lap, since I didn't have a poster tube. 8-) they gave us the bag at the 2011 EV show, but no poster tubes.

1 - yes. In a poster tube, going to show city, tube filled with one from the collection to donate at 10C preparty, then show poster on ride home. Most flights allow two carry on, so I have one bag change of clothes and the poster tube (heck I carry a uke now too and never had a problem, messenger bag, tube under flap and uke...)

    2 no

3 yes, so that I have a "memories" Show poster and try for artist signed numbered if it's good, hence I usually have one to donate to 10c down the road

4 I grab a well worn tube outta the closet filled with poster tubes. I leave the tube at the hotel room, I take rubber bands and a really cool poster "condom" I got at a show a few years ago, just a long sleeve of plastic, folded up in my pocket, but if I remember it, it keeps sweat and beer off the show poster -- but some of my fav posters have a lil wear and tear on 'em and I like em that way! Yeah, vedder tour once, I got poster home "just fine" with only a rubber band, carried home whole way, never let go of it, has the sweat warp to prove it!

Just keep track of tube, sooooo many folks lose track of tube at ticket counter, check in, security, etc cause it's not something you usually carry...

the best would be to put them inside the tube (in the case the sell it with one, not always the case) and put it the suitcase, you will have to check with the airline the baggage policy, remember you are allowed only one suitcase up to 23 Kg, and not all airlines allows you to take the tube as a carry on... some counter clerks are real bitches and will always want to charge excess baggage fees; not all stewardesses are nice, they are under paid, work long hours, have to handle with lots of people, and probably they might be with few hours of sleep, therefore, cranky: and in the best escenario they won't give a damn about a friggin' poster, so bear in mind all this, check the baggage policy and then you will be able to decide...

I buy a poster in every gig I attend, I never check bags and I always bring them with me as carry ons. When they sell a tube, I buy it. For the times they don't sell'em, on the other hand, I always carry a few rubber bands and have mastered a ninja techinque to wrap it all up that has given me no ruined posters untill now, rain or shine, fence or seat, crazy south american crowd or english butler-like crowd.

And since DeLuna last year I started to get up to 5 posters (except when they don't take credit cards) to re-sell later or (preferrably) distribute to good friends! =)

Honestly, all of these rituals have become a fun part of the Pearl Jam experience for me now... I love it!

I absolutely dont want to contradict you, my friend, but so far I have taken the tubes onboard with me on American, United, Lufthansa, TAM, Gol, LAN, Air Canada, Alaskan and a few others I don't rememeber.
I guess this helps: I never check bags (so the bitchy counter clerk don't have much to argue with me) and once inside the plane I don't put the tube in the bin, I take it down on the feet space!
It worked like a charm untill now! =)

  • I always carry my poster tubes on planes when I travel. I've taken, jetblue, air canda, westjet and southwest. I wouldn't trust the airlines with my posters.

It's ok, nice you didn't have issues, probably because you don't check bags... hope it keeps this way, for everybody...

Took 2 4" yazoo tubes as carry on's coming back from the gorge show to get back the 8 prints i got from EACH show. Those prints ended up paying for the flight from NYC, the tix to the show, my share for the condo and truck we rented, all the food and a zip of the finest nyc diesel.

But that was when tour posters were worth money.:o8-)
