Did changing drummers help PJ?

I ilke both Matt and Jack for what they are, but I liked the way Jack made space in the songs. To me, Matts drumming is just full speed ahead through the whole song.. I think it was Jack's ability to use the toms and lay off the cymbals. Ultimately though, as someone else said earlier, the drummer is really contained by what he is given to work with.. But the way I imagine it is -- Yield would not have been nearly as good with Matt (sorry  )
Matt is a rocker, and his endurance and abilities live are amazing. And I also agree with Juggler, leave the song writing to Stone, Jeff, Ed..Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)0 -

i love all their albums but some have to be considered their "worst" right?
every album has brilliant moment
ten as number 1 and vs as number 2 is their top 2,binaural number 3 IMO
i agree that every album has brilliant moments. the issue that i have is their last few albums seem to be way more inconsistent than the albums from the band's first 10 years.
for me....
ten (not necessarily my favorite--but come on, it's ten)
yield
no code
vitalogy
vs
binaural
riot act

Some are looking purely at the drumming and not considering ancillary things like Jacks mental health issues. It is a wish that they could have kept Jack or Dave A/K, knowing full well that he did not want to stay in the band. The other point of view is taking everything into consideration. If you are wishing, I would wish for Jack or Dave A. If I am taking a realistic whole picture point of view I am glad Matt is in the band. He just seems to be a very down to Earth good guy. A calming force for the band off the stage perhaps. I think that is more what Ed meant, not necessarily that he is the best drummer but he is the best drummer for them at this point in their lives.
So I guess to answer my OP... changing drummers helped. Everyone just has a different era that they like the best and I think each era is directly attributed to the drummer at the time.
Ten - Dave K
Vs./Vitalogy- Dave A
No Code/Yield- Jack Irons
everything since- Matt
My opinion is I like the Jack era best followed by Dave A and then Dave K. Glad Matt is in the band, just wish he would step forward a little more on a few more songs. In a my perfect PJ world Jack would still be the drummer, but he is not and I more than OK with Matt for all of the positive things mentioned previously.
fair points all around.....though judging from the songs that matt did pen, i'm happy with him taking even more of a back seat regarding the song writing.
I was referring to his drumming not necessarily his song writing. Like on Got Some. I love the drums in that song, especially at the beginning.Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.0 -

Matt is a concrete block and I think they love it that they are ALL on the same wavelength with each other. I would say the band have never been happier with their lives and the band in general. Its stable and Cameron was the key to that.
jack irons injected more creativity into this band than any drummer. if dave was still on the kit, do you think we would have been treated to albums like no code or yield? no chance dave can hang on albums like that. zero. instead of no code, we more than likely would have had a vitalogy 2 on our hands.
matt was a drummer for hire / filler at the time he joined. the expectation was that he was to help them during the '98 tour (since it was already booked) and that was it. i don't think anyone expected matt to be around for the long haul.
and i think you are overlooking that jack suffered from biopolar disorder and had some medical issues. THAT was the main reason why he couldn't handle touring.0 -
I think Dave A could hang with any style. He was more funk than pounding the shit outta the kit prior to PJ. If anything, he had to adjust to Pearl Jam's style IMO. He's still my favorite drummer out the bunch - but am glad they didn't keep making Vs over and over again. Different drummers are to thank for that IMO. 8-)www.cluthelee.com0

Interesting post. I think they're all great drummers and Matt is as tight as you can get.
All of them added a different flavour at different times, but Matt walked the mile.

Thats what I am saying. Everyone says they like this album or that album best but are they really saying I liked the band better with a certain drummer. Many people may not have even considered that.Forced to endure, what I cannot forgive.0
