Rolling Stone asks "What is the best grunge album?"

Grunge... hate that title but it does present an interesting debate.

Soundgarden return this month with King Animal, their first album since way back in 1996. They broke up right around the time that grunge music went the way of the dinosaurs, but their return has gotten us thinking about that era of rock history, when a ton of great albums were released in a very short period of time.

Now we have a question for you: what is your favorite grunge album of all time? We realize this is bound to cause some controversy, as the term "grunge" has never been properly defined. Many bands that blew up in the early 1990s found themselves attached to that label, though in the case of groups like the Smashing Pumpkins or Red Hot Chili Peppers, it made very little sense. Then there's a whole wave of post-grunge bands that claimed to be carrying on the legacy. (We pity the person that votes for a Creed album here.) But don't let us define the term for you. Vote for whichever grunge album you like best. Just please only vote once, and only for a single album.

    This one gets my vote, because I'm pretty sure it's the first album I ever heard the word "grunge" used to describe and then two years or so went by before I ever heard that word attached to any other music.

    Dirt (Alice in Chains) isn't a bad one.
    Nevermind (Nirvana) seems to be the one that brought it into the mainstream.

    Oh yeah! Ragged Glory- the glorious return of great "garage rock". One of my all-time favorites. When the record came out and I saw the poster in a record shop with the words "feed back is back" on it I begged the store owner to sell it to me.

    Not a Pearl Jam one anyway. As much as I despise the term PJ were never a "grunge" band. Alice In Chains are a on the other hand are as grungy as music can sound so any of their three full albums especially Dirt. Nirvana and Mudhoney have had notable releases too. Am I the only person who hates PJ being mentioned on grungereport.com? They're not FUCKING grunge!!!!!

    Ha! I'm totally with you. I guess I'd say that some PJ songs are a bit "grungy" but those are definitely the exception.

    I always found AIC to be metal with Facelift, and then turned to what I call sludge-metal (no, I'm not saying I coined the phrase, I must have heard it somewhere, but it sounds like it fits).

    most bands fit many or no labels at all. most bands hated the term grunge. Metallica fought for years not to be called speed metal. so pearl jam are grunge, they aren't grunge, who cares. grunge doesn't even really describe a musical sound as it actually really describes a scene, a period of time in musical history in a certain geographical location where the most awesome bands came out.

    I never considered Pearl Jam grunge, they were always just a great rock and roll band to me. When I think of grunge, I think of Mudhoney, Melvins or Tad.
